The 14th General Manager in Leafs history Dave Nonis sits down with Bob McCown and Damien Cox on Prime Time Sports. Afterwards McCown, Cox, Brian Lawton and Mike Smith have an interesting conversation on the firing of Brian Burke.

I only heard those rumours from idiot Canuck fans. McCown is the first, and only journalist to give them credence.

Nazam Kadri is a superstar, give him a damn chance. Do not trade him for this spaghetti eating goalie. Give up Franson+Bozak/MacA+Low Prospect or something like that, not freaking Kadri.

Bon:  I have been confused by today. If Bobcat is right about the trade i would be surprised Nonis would take the position, because it would appear ownership is pushing the deal. Nonis noted that he would not trade young players for older players that stay for 1-2 years. See Lou falls outside of his response. Other than that he was evasive. It has come out that all the brain trust except Burkie want Lou, and the suggestion is Burkie did, but not at the price being asked. The presser avoided any details — not going to discuss specifics. But Burkie was relieved of his responsibilities. One has to hope that Nonis maintains his integrity, as he did in Vancouver,(unless he believes Gardiner is a fair price.).  I wonder if Kadri and Jake is a fair price for Lou and Edler, but that is a whole nother issue?

It really is… Though I feel more of a connection to Burke as I do any player on the roster. Imagine your favorite leaf player was dealt for absolutely nothing.

Shannon was on Prime Time just before Nonis (was listening on my drive home from work).  Shannon still maintains that Luongo will be a Leaf come Monday or Tuesday…but he had not heard Gardiner’s name at all.  As far as he was concerned, Vancouver wanted a center going back….but didn’t name names (but he was adamant that Gardiner’s name was never brought up).  He also went to speculate that Nonis would not be GM next October.

That was what someone on the TSN panel implied as well. They said while Burke may have not had any interest in making the playoffs only to get beat the Board might have been OK with them adding a few million to the bottom line.

Watching Nonis today as it was happening I thought he looked like a shattered, defeated man who was soldiering through it. Those twittering at the press conference kept saying he looked like he wa going to start breaking up. I don’t trust this new setup.

I have no doubt Nonis will be the GM next year. I think Shannon is off on this one.

My question is that if the Leafs come 1st in the division this year, does Burke get the credit. Alternatively if the Leafs come last, do we disprove of Nonis or is it still “Burkes team”.

That might be stretching it a bit far in the other direction.  PPG since he was 19 and leading the best team in the Conference….little better than decent.  Kadri generally eats up the AHL after October.

TH: First in the Div — No chance IMO, too many holes.  I believe Nonis will give credit to Burkie, and take credit with the team for trades done this year that pan out. I really think Nonis has a whole lot of integrity. If we come last, that surely will be on RC because we have enough talent to avoid that. Even the odds makers have about 12 teams below us.

I’m hoping the Flyers trade for Luongo and then buy out Bryz. I would take Bryz on a one year deal. I think he’s still a quality goaltender.

Ugh I read through many of the comments and was horrified to see the name George Cope come up a few times as having a score to settle with Burke.  It dawned on me that this George Cope is the same guy that lived 5 houses down the street from me years and years ago back when he was running Clearnet.  Its sad to think, he has two twin sons my age, we used to play road hockey every day, we were best friends, until they moved further and further away into bigger and bigger houses.  I would hate to think of my old neighbour becoming evil corporate scum and destroying this team, the same neighbour that would take me and his own kids to the rink to play minor hockey…..

Jiggs: The Capitalist culture at work a la Enron style. Money and position can corrupt the way a person thinks and acts. Very sad. At least you had a good relationship.

Granted. He’s a PPG AHLer. Don’t get me wrong, I’m pulling for the guy, but I never saw him play junior and have only seen AHL highlights. His last 12 NHL games have coloured it a bit for me. And, yes, I know the stuff about how he has to play with decent linemates.
