Leafs trade Matthew Lombardi to Phoenix for conditional 3rd or 4th round pick

The draft pick is a fourth rounder in 2014, which could become a third if Lombardi re-signs in Phoenix or records a certain number of points with the Coyotes this season.

Obviously, this is better than using the amnesty buy out because a) the Leafs get a pick, and b) retain both of those buyout options for the summer period should they want to exercise them. The Leafs will pay his $500,000 bonus and retain some of his base salary in order to off load the cap hit.

There has been almost no mention of Matthew Lombardi throughout camp and it was pretty clear his place wasn’t here this season. He would’ve just been in the way of the advancement of the likes of Nazem Kadri and I would’ve been more than a little PO’ed if we had to watch another game with Lombardi miscast on the checking line wasting everybody’s time.

A mid round pick is a pretty good get for a misfit piece of Lombardi’s circumstances. In moving him, the Leafs free up $3.5 million in cap space, taking them down to around $62.5 million in cap payroll.

Twenty-two points in 28 games for a centre playing between two wingers who are top-five in league scoring at the time pretty much guarantees demotion, wouldn’t you say?  Obviously, he was regarded as more of a liability than an asset where he was.

Face it, C., expectations were higher for him in the short term, whatever future bonuses were presumed might arise from his signing.

Okay, my apologies, he will play at a 60 point pace for someone else.  Injuries may still keep him from hitting that number.

Well think of it this way. How long will Columbus stay in Columbus if they don’t ice a descent competitive team? This off season they made trades including Dubinsky, Foligno and Bobrovsky coming back. Why not a cheap offensive player to compliment their 2nd line?

His plan was RG and CP all along.  Wanted to be able to make them offers if they were still available.  I truly believe this.

    DBG agree’s with you:  http://www.downgoesbrown.com/2013/01/2013-nhl-season-preview-western.html

Anaheim Ducks - Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry are prototypical Canadian forwards who are also fiercely patriotic, we assume, since that would explain why they both keep whispering to their agents about making sure they’re wearing a maple leaf by the first week of July.

Fuck the circle, that is all he does…he doesnt hit or score and is slow as fuck.

JMcClement is an upgrade over Steckle….let Kadri or Connelly role in the 3rd hole and JMAC play 4th line with PK minutes.

GMs don’t listen to fans when evaluating players.

Connolly has been around a long time, he’s a known product in the league, no surprises, nothing new to learn

I think it was just to free up roster space and to make sure they got something for him.  They probably could have gotten more if they held out to the deadline but freeing up a spot and avoiding the injury risk makes it worthwhlie.
