Leafs trade Matthew Lombardi to Phoenix for conditional 3rd or 4th round pick

The draft pick is a fourth rounder in 2014, which could become a third if Lombardi re-signs in Phoenix or records a certain number of points with the Coyotes this season.

Obviously, this is better than using the amnesty buy out because a) the Leafs get a pick, and b) retain both of those buyout options for the summer period should they want to exercise them. The Leafs will pay his $500,000 bonus and retain some of his base salary in order to off load the cap hit.

There has been almost no mention of Matthew Lombardi throughout camp and it was pretty clear his place wasn’t here this season. He would’ve just been in the way of the advancement of the likes of Nazem Kadri and I would’ve been more than a little PO’ed if we had to watch another game with Lombardi miscast on the checking line wasting everybody’s time.

A mid round pick is a pretty good get for a misfit piece of Lombardi’s circumstances. In moving him, the Leafs free up $3.5 million in cap space, taking them down to around $62.5 million in cap payroll.

    Yeah, yuk, yuk ,yuk.  Montreal made the play-offs 5 of the 7 years since the last lock-out, and the conference final. I can get a hate on for the habs too, but kidding myself that I wouldn’t rather have a record like that instead of ours would be a lie. Those laughs are hollow.  imo

    Just b/c last year when Kadri and MacA were on a line together they showed good chemistry at times and I might like to see if that happens this season.

    Why doesnt anyone have MacA pegged in on the third line? Hes got grit and would provide awesome scoring touch down their with the young guys. This wuold allow Kule to play with Grabo on the second line and more importantly have JVR in the top 6 where he belongs, not rotting on the third line like he was in Philly!!

    Hope that if it is the 3rd rounder it turns out like Leivo. Quietly crept up the prospect charts as a real sleeper. Having a fantastic year to date.

    Regardless of who goes down or stays I feel ok with our forwards and our D but have zero confidence in our goal. I still do not see Reimer or Scrivens as full time starter material. Reports out of TC have been lukewarm at best for both.

    With the problems that Canucks are having at center the solution that would be acceptable to the Leafs it sending Connolly and mid-level prospect for luongo.

    We retain some of Connolly’s salary and they retain part of Luongo’s.

    Otherwise Nonis should look somewhere else.
