Leafs trade Matthew Lombardi to Phoenix for conditional 3rd or 4th round pick

The draft pick is a fourth rounder in 2014, which could become a third if Lombardi re-signs in Phoenix or records a certain number of points with the Coyotes this season.

Obviously, this is better than using the amnesty buy out because a) the Leafs get a pick, and b) retain both of those buyout options for the summer period should they want to exercise them. The Leafs will pay his $500,000 bonus and retain some of his base salary in order to off load the cap hit.

There has been almost no mention of Matthew Lombardi throughout camp and it was pretty clear his place wasn’t here this season. He would’ve just been in the way of the advancement of the likes of Nazem Kadri and I would’ve been more than a little PO’ed if we had to watch another game with Lombardi miscast on the checking line wasting everybody’s time.

A mid round pick is a pretty good get for a misfit piece of Lombardi’s circumstances. In moving him, the Leafs free up $3.5 million in cap space, taking them down to around $62.5 million in cap payroll.

Connolly was an attempt at a short term solution after losing out on richards. By them sometime to find a real first line centre

I suspect there were other factors involved with Burke’s dismissal (but we’re not supposed to talk about them).

Connolly was brought in as a temporary solution to the #1 center spot…it didn’t work out…and he ended up being one of the best paid 3rd line penalty killers in the league….is Connolly moveable? Anybody is moveable…but I wouldn’t expect much…3rd rounder?

I like the Lombardi trade. It’s not a great pick, but it’s clears some roster and cap space

No I’m saying age is becomes a factor at a certain point, I’m saying that a player who averages 50pts a season doesn’t continue that as he gets into his mid-30s. I’m also saying that Buffalo wanted in a 3rd line role which means they lost confidence in his offensive ability but not however his defensive ability. There is nothing wrong becoming a 40pt defensive forward I see that as his career now. Nothing wrong with that.

Connolly has a limited NTC. Nobody seems to know the specifics of that though.

Agreed.  I don’t dislike him, but I don’t feel he’s part of our future. Same with Connolly.  I like Connolly but would rather like him on another team.

What you describe isn’t nonsensical at all, but Cameron’s implication that a team would purposely acquire and give a roster spot to someone known or suspected to be incompetent at his assigned role because he might, at some future date, be converted into another asset certainly is.  Connolly was acquired to play centre, albeit in the short term, not to become a down payment for someone else.

We will be able to thank BB for the cap space available for RG and CP to sign here long term on July 1st though.

They lost confidence in a guy scoring at 0.89 PPG pace?  They also replaced him with Leino, who had 11 fewer points.  This guy is only 2 seasons removed from playing PPG hockey, so characterizing him as a guy struggling to get to 50 is probably not entirely accurate.

Exactly.  It’s precisely in providing this short term solution that he can justly be said not to have lived up to expectation.
