  1. Broccoli Salad

At 3 p.m., the Pens and Flyers meet up for the first time since their epic playoff series last Spring on NBC. CBC will be showing Jets v. Sens at the same time.

Enough talking about it, time to enjoy the NHL’s return in all of its glory.

Broccoli Salad

Ingredients

  • 2 heads of fresh broccoli – florets only
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1/2 green onions (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups seedless red grapes, halved
  • 3/4 cup toasted blanched slivered almonds (can use other nuts – pine nuts, although they are very pricey or sunflower seeds, even toasted soya beans do the trick)
  • 8 – 12 slices of bacon (optional)

Dressing:

  • 3/4 to 1 cup light mayonnaise
  • 2 Tbsp sugar (prefer sugar substitute like Splenda since it dissolves better)
  • 3 Tbps white vinegar (although apple cider vinegar adds a nice flavor)

Directions

  • Cook bacon until crispy – crumble bacon
  • Place prepared broccoli, celery, onions, grapes and bacon (optional) in a large mixing bowl
  • In a small bowl, combine dressing ingredients
  • Pour dressing over broccoli mixture until well coated
  • Cover and refrigerate for several hours (can leave overnight)
  • Toast the almonds
  • Add nuts just before serving so they don’t get soggy.

    Keon’s lightened up considerably, he’s been back for several Leafs functions. I would be reluctant forgive an organization that refused to sign or trade me, effectively black balling me from the NHL.

    Keon should have centred Ellis and Henderson in the ’72 Summit Series, not Bobby Clarke.  Clarke was a laboring skater.

    Henderson proved in that series that he was one of the finest forwards in the world (the Soviets outskated some of our guys, but not him), and Keon would have shone as well… especially on the big ice.

    Keon jumped to the WHA for 4 years after that, but, finished his career with Hartford Whalers in the NHL

    Mattmark:  Good sentiment. My problem is everytime I reflect on the past, the bad trades come up, the stupidities etc. I don’t go back as far as you, but most of my favourites were traded away. Only really good think in that era was we had the Redwings number when it came to the playoffs. I remember vivdly when he would sit down at ice level in his little box, almost like King Canute, with a poor game going on around him. Despite his wealth and age, he had no intention of spending to bring the cup back. But you are so right, it was in the past. Can’t forgive him. No pride in the City, or the Club. Just a money machine.  Sorry for the post.
