After the Toronto Maple Leafs let go Brian Burke, they could be interested in bringing in another big name to be the next president.

Sportsnet’ s Nick Kypreos confirmed an earlier tweet from Sportsnet 590 The Fan’s Bob McCown that Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment has privately discussed bringing in Wayne Gretzky to the Maple Leafs front office.

Currently, Maple Leafs COO Tom Anselmi is listed as the team’s president. It remains unclear if MLSE would prefer someone with more of a hockey background.

Gretzky has not worked in the NHL since he left the Phoenix Coyotes in 2009. He spent nine years with the club as the alternate governor, managing partner, head of hockey operations, and head coach (2005-09).

The Leafs promoted Dave Nonis to general manager after the Leafs fired Burke Jan. 9, who was the team president during his tenure with the organization.

    If he were to start contacting players to come here, sure that would be a good thing, however that’s not his job….that’s Nonis’ job.  If that starts happening, what’s to stop him from poking his nose into other things??  I simply feel that a GM should be left alone to the hockey decisions and that a Prez is more for corporate image.  I’d be cool with Gretzky signing on as Prez as I think it would do good for our overall image.  However, I don’t want him involved with hockey operations.

    Man, he wouldn’t just start randomly contacting players.  He would be doing that on behalf of Nonis, with guys hockey operations is interested in.  In no way would this be an interference of any kind.

    Normally, the President would look after the business side of the day-to-day operations, but if Gretzky were in that role, he would just be a public figurehead, and they’d have someone else do all of that.

    I think our image is fine in non hockey matters.  The biggest thing that would help our on ice image (in terms of other UFAs wanting to sign here)…is winning.
