Preview and GDT: Islanders at Leafs (7 p.m., LeafsTV)
Share

The Islanders are obviously a beatable opponent, but don’t face the same mental and physical challenges of a back to back cross-border scenario after a high-tempo game for the Leafs last night. The key for Carlyle’s team will be avoiding the let down coming off of the high in Pittsburgh.

Joffrey Lupul, reportedly out at least six weeks with the fractured forearm, has been given non-roster IR status and Matt Frattin has been called up from the Marlies shortly after being named as a replacement player in the AHL All-Star game. I’d guess Frattin will take over the wing beside Kadri and Komarov, MacArthur goes back in his usual spot with Grabovski and Kulemin, and James van Riesmdyk starts on the top line with Kessel and Lupul after the game he had last night. Maybe MacArthur plays top line LW and JvR stays with the second line that clicked last night. There was no formal practice today so we’ll have to wait and see.

A few notes on the opponent:

- Keith Aucoin returns to Toronto as an Islander tonight. He’s been centering their third line to start the season and actually playing the point on the powerplay.

- Kyle Okposo has moved to the top line RW position, in P.A. Parenteau’s spot, who they let go last off-season. He’s playing beside Matt Moulson and John Tavares. Each have two points through their first two games.

- Tavares will have family present and said yesterday that the ACC is his favourite place to play and the Leafs are his favourite team to beat. You may recall, however, the Leafs’ ended Tavares’ 12-game point streak a year ago today with a 3-0 shutout victory at the ACC. The Leafs beat the Islanders in three of four last season.

Official lineups and starters to come when available.

Kessel needs to score on saturday, and I hope Reimer’s in net.

The media has been LOVING Dion and his performance thus far in the season.  Yet you hate him?? Wonder who I will trust on this one.

He was running away b/c Dion can’t fight. He has terrible balance, always falls in fights.

The better your weakest link then the better your team is. You have to ice the best team possible, and it’s not that with Franson in it. He’s terrible in his own end.

Or… and this may sound crazy… WE CAN’T AFFORD TO LOSE OUR #1 DMAN IN A FIGHT, whether it be for 5 minutes, or multiple games (if he were to get injured). Having him fight is pointless, and hurts the team. Jesus fucking christ…

Dion can’t be the answer every night, play 25+ hard minutes against the best in the league, score 40+ points a year, and fight.
this roster still has 2 gaping holes.
LEGIT top 4 D man, and a #1 C (kadri is making a case for in house promotion but needs to keep the pace he’s on, not sure if he’s ready for that yet)
Fill those 2 holes. Stop with the “rest” BS for reimer and let him do his thing which he is completely capable of when healthy.
Nonis needs to do whatever it takes to fill those holes without tearing the team apart.
So pissed at Carlyle for sitting him. Last night was exactly the start he needed to get in the zone.
    BLAH!

I don’t hate Dion at all.  I don’t think he gets enough credit for being an all around good defenseman and by far the best on our team.  Burke loved him and that’s good enough for me.

What I find disturbing about Phaneuf not fighting after the questionable hit on Taveres is that action is an example of how “rats are taking over the game”

Even “Mike in Buffalo” just said on Leafs Talk that Dion Phaneuf cannot play 25 minutes + ESPECIALLY in this shortened season.
That’s my only point, you can’t lean on Dion like you could a Chara, Weber, Karlsson etc. And all you guys thought that I was saying that Dion sucks. I wasn’t.
