A little late on the news; we wanted to make sure you guys checked out the inaugural MLHS podcast.

Jake Gardiner has been sent down to the Toronto Marlies to rediscover his timing and confidence in the AHL. His poor decision making with the puck and numerous bobbles have been uncharacteristic to say the least, and James Mirtle makes the point that he’s just the latest in a line of Leafs who have shown even more rust than we expected coming off a concussion. A young player being sent down to get up to speed after a significant injury layoff is obviously nothing to worry about, at least not yet.

Meanwhile, I hope Mike Komisarek takes full advantage of his opportunity tomorrow night. For the first time since he got here, I can say with a straight face that, forgetting one costly penalty vs. the Pens, Komisarek deserves to be in the lineup. Maybe – okay, likely – he’s just been the beneficiary of some good timing when it comes the team’s performance in the two games he played versus the two he didn’t, but he’s nonetheless been a plus-three in around 15 minutes of ice time each game. His physical play, experience and tendency to stay close to home are qualities the Leafs blueline could use but it’s always a question of how many mistakes he’s going to make.

He’ll be returning to the lineup following a game in which none of the Leafs’ D looked good, especially not fellow fringe defenceman Cody Franson, who I thought played his worst game in a Leaf sweater with a direct hand in two goals against.

Ball’s in your court, Mike. Surprise us all.

Actually I have been asking for PK to come to Toronto for longer than that.  But assume what you will.

I didnt want Benn until Cameron showed us that player montage of him. guy is a stud.

I think Gardiner is a terrific player…no doubt. Saying I think PK is better right now than Gardiner is in no way meant as a slight to Jake. They bring different things, IMO.

But you can’t in any way say that PK played “sheltered” minutes…it’s simply not true. He played all types of minutes…both PP and PK. He’s physical, willing to fight, with just as much offensive upside as Gardiner. Not to mention he’s an articulate local kid who seems to come from a great family.

This isn’t the same as the terrible Kessel deal, if that’s what you’re getting at, BTW. We’re not in the middle of a dismantle and it isn’t 3 high picks we’re talking about…just one. A top pairing defenseman is also far more valuable than a winger.

But at the end of the day a 16M/4 year deal is definitely matched. So it’s irrelevant.

Jamine Benn would have been nice because he would fill a void in the Toronto Future. PK Subann is not needed for the future in Toronto with guys like Gards, Rilley Finn Purcey Blacker etc..

I know they need to keep him for the season-but so what? If he plays really well the return will be even higher.

As many as possible. As many as it takes to keep Komi and Franson out of the fucking lineup.

Again, you have little to go on here except his total time on ice, which Gardiner proves is a bit of a farce.  You didn’t even know who was on the team, but you were willing to comment about who was in what role. I don’t deny that Subban didn’t always get sheltered minutes, but the fact is, he wasn’t doing Dion’s job, and that’s what a lot of people are trying to sell this guy as.

I agree. We need more talent up the middle and that seems available in this draft.

Getting a reliable # 1 goaltender wouldnt kill us either

If Mtl keeps jerking PK,s chain, well get him for free when he goes to UFA

I would say PK Subban will be a much better defenceman than Phaneuf is. Phaneuf makes nicer hits but has a tenth the IQ.

Yep, and yet they often felt more comfortable with him on the ice than Subban.  But really, for most of the year it was Gill and Gorges, and then Subban took over the role out of necessity after the deadline.

Regardless, he’s a good player who could be great.  Lets just leave it at that.

Maybe, but we do this dance all the time.  Nash is available – but we can’t get him because he’s the greatest power forward ever!  Same nonsense with Luongo.  He’s an all-star goalie, you can’t get him cheap.  Now we’re going to exaggerate Subban’s accomplishments and make it seem like he’s actually the perfect 2-way D. It’s just not true.  Would love the guy in blue and white, but I’m just not willing to pretend he’s something he’s not – because you can bet the media won’t once he’s here.

I hate the Habs, but Subban’s a beast. He really does it all. I think he’d be our #1.

I wasnt suggesting PK was a  prospect. The Leafs have been drafting D in the top 2 rounds for a # of years. i ts time to bolster the 1C and goaltending.

No. He’s not as good as Dion is. He plays the same role for the Habs as Dion does for the Leafs, but Phaneuf still gets a bigger share of his team’s ice time. Subban is very good, but Phaneuf is still better. It really doesn’t matter, though. If we got Subban, he’d be paired with Dion.
