Preview and GDT: Leafs at Rangers (7 p.m., CBC)

How’s the saying go? Shit happens, it’s how you react to the shit that counts? While the loss on Thursday was riddled with familiar Leaf flaws and more than a little concerning, we had seen much better from a defensive standpoint in the three games prior.

Tonight the team is at the MSG to take on the 1-3 Rangers. Despite their plethora of offensive weapons, the Blueshirts have only scored two goals a game on average in their opening four and have been struggling with the man advantage (11%). The fearful Leafs fan in all of us sees a talented, hungry and frustrated team that’s ready to break out of it at home on a Saturday night, but let’s hope the Leafs can reproduce some of their 2011-12 road success against the Rangers.

The Leafs had a pair of 4-2 wins in New York in the first half of last season where they shut them down pretty well and solved Lundqvist with surprising ease. John Tortorella spoke about his team’s difficulty dealing with the Leafs’ speed off the rush. Lupul was instrumental in the two wins and named the first star in both, scoring twice and registering 13 shots.

The Leafs of course were much less successful against them in the back half of the season, losing twice at home by a collective score of 7-3. That season series matches the home/away pattern of the current season, with the Leafs 2-0 as the visitors and 0-2 at the ACC.

James Reimer gets the start in a big chance given the circumstances – Scrivens was awful Thursday – and it’s one Leafs fans are praying he takes.

Mike Komisarek and Mark Fraser both enter the lineup in the place of the recently demoted Jake Gardiner and presumably Cody Franson.

The lineup the Leafs are facing tonight:

Rick Nash – Brad Richards – Marian Gaborik
Taylor Pyatt – Derek Stepan – Ryan Callahan
Michael Rupp – Brian Boyle – Carl Hagelin
Jeff Halpern – Benn Ferriero – Arron Asham

Ryan McDonagh – Dan Girardi
Marc Staal – Michael Del Zotto
Steve Eminger – Anton Stralman

Henrik Lundqvist

After tonight I’d trade Gards+. Question is do I want a #1C or PK?  Tough choice but has to be a #1C cos that improves the Center, really gives Phil what he needs and no doubt gives the LW a shot in the arm.

Positives – Riemer, JVR ( Carlyle used him in all situations) , Orr/Brown manning up as usual

Not much quit in Grabs, Naz  and Komarov.

Too many minutes for Dion and a guy who’s played 5 games in the NHL

Othe® than that a lot of passengers and under-utilized players

Dont change a thing Dave- choosing between MacKinnon or Jones is all you have to worry about if thats the best effort Carlyle can coax can coax out of these guys

Carlyle has now had 23 games to implement his system with this team (largely the same group as last year) and the result is a .413 winning percentage, 4 games under .500.

Agreed. Sad we have so many passengers tonight.  Trouble is I don’t want to see the Leafs keep losing. I want to see them improving. I want to see some semblance of sustained O. The D is starting to come around well. PK is a strength, PP just gets me mad.

Also seems pretty obvious Phil was playing with two 3rd liners tonight. Bozak between Kess and Lups is fine most nights but when one of your top six is pulled off that line it suddenly becomes a 3rd line. Phil did not have a good night tonight but you have ask what Nash or Gaborik would look light playing with Bozak and MacArthur. We don’t yet have the depth to sustain injuries to top players…

Worst plus/minus in the NHL right now is the Leafs dmen Kotska w/ -7 and Dion Phaneuf with -8. 3 CBJ players are at -6

Phaneuf leads the league in total TOI too. Funny how he leaves out that stat. And he’s playing with a 27-year-old through his first 5 career NHL games.

  • Bob’s your uncle

    After 5 games: 2013 – Carlyle – 4 pts, 2011/12 – Wilson – 9 pts.

Randy’s got some ground to make up, but he does have a better team than Wilson had.
Run Randy Run! (I know, it’s hard when so many fans have your dick in their mouths)
