Leafs Prospect Update – January 28

After being away from his teammates for both the World Junior Championships and the Leafs‘ pre-season camp, Morgan Rielly returned to Moose Jaw and the Warriors returned to the win column for the first time since his departure.

In three games this weekend, Rielly picked up three assists and Moose Jaw was able to score a pair of wins.  For those of you hoping, as I am, for Rielly to join the Marlies in the AHL playoffs, don’t fret; the Warriors are still 10 points behind 8th place Saskatoon who also have 3 games in hand on Moose Jaw.  The chances of this team make the playoffs are slim so an extended stay in the AHL is almost certainly in the cards for Rielly.

In contrast to Rielly, Josh Leivo and his Kitchener Rangers look to be headed toward an extended playoff run in the OHL.  Since being traded from Sudbury to Kitchener, Leivo has continued to put up better than a point per game.  Unsurprisingly, his goal production has taken a bit of a dip as he hasn’t been expected to carry the offensive load with the Rangers to the same extent as he was with the Wolves but he’s still managed 3 goals and 8 assists in 10 games with Kitchener.  Leivo currently sits 16th in OHL scoring and is one of the better defensive forwards in the OHL to boot.

Erie Otters forward Connor Brown continues to put up points and sits 10th in OHL scoring in his draft+1 season.  He’s had some pretty creative assists in the games that I’ve seen and his passing might just be the attribute he’ll rely on at the pro level.  His goal totals are inflated by a pretty spectacular 14 powerplay goals and I’m not sure how sustainable those kind of totals will be for him moving forward.  Suffice to say, he and the other Connor (McDavid) have developed some solid chemistry and I’d expect that as McDavid moves from ‘good player’ to ‘OHL Superstar’ that Brown could easily find himself even higher on the list next season.

Matt Finn continues to struggle with a bout of mono that forced him to miss time earlier in the year and has been out of the lineup for the last 10 days.  It’s pretty impressive that he’s been able to play as well as he has in the interim despite the illness.  Hopefully he’ll be able to permanently shake it soon and get back to the level he was playing at early in the season where he was among the OHL’s leading scorers among defensemen while playing in every situation.

Weber: Rinne in net; Suter #2D (some would say they are 1A and 1B); Trotz’ defensive system polished for years
    .
    Dion: Toskala/Giguere/Reimer/Scrivens in net; Gunnarsson #2D; RW’s non-system
    .
I wonder how each would look if they flipped teams?

That’s a lot of cash to sign those guys and make room by using their buyout. Not sure there are going to be that many teams willing to spend like that. Plus, that’s tough scenario to make work. Any player bought out is incredibly likely to be making far less than what these two will sign for, and then the team will still have to go and replace that player. Teams that are going to struggle with the cap (ie Philly) aren’t going to be able to do this.

The Islanders -especially if the finish 6-10th.  I could see them moving a pick in that range for the money on DiPietro’s deal, but a top 5 they’d want to keep.
    -
Most of the other bad contracts are pretty manageable.  I would have said Lecavalier, but Conacher seems to be helping him to a renaissance.  If he’s playing PPG hockey, he’s well worth the 10 million.

It was really just Ryan as far as I understand.  Getzlaf gave a heartfelt interview after and said he felt very responsible and wished he could have done more.  I don’t think Getzlaf’s slump had anything to do with Carlyle.  He had a baby with colic, and said he wasn’t sleeping more than 2 hours a night…so, that pretty much explains a rough year, in my opinion.
    -
Plus, if Carlyle wasn’t happy, neither was Boudreau, who regularly demoted him to the 2nd line and 2nd unit PP after his arrival.

I’d do the islanders deal. But try to make it top 3 only. It is a lot of cash. But it helps the islanders move into their new building with a real nice balance book. Get them to profitability a decade earlier.

I’m still looking for that second deal. TB was my choice as well. Profitability should be all the teams priority. Take the gift that’s offered.

The only serious contender I see, who could sign them both, would be Detroit.  The Flames and Senators could also probably do it, and maybe the Habs.

Sorry, I didn’t mean that they’d quit, just that they were the two underachieving. Perry was certainly still very effective.

But to be fair, big money deals rarely involve the GM.  Look at Lamiorello – he had zero interest in signing Kovalchuk.

Non stop verbal jabs go on all the time…and some guys just aren’t good at the rebuttal. That’s what I envision.
There was a rumour Steeger was on Kessel’s case and somebody(can’t remember who…want to say Komi) tuned Steeger as he wouldn’t drop it/take the warning to shape up.
    Shortly after,Kris was gone.
Heard it through the local old pro grapeline too.
