Preview and GDT: Bruins at Leafs (7 p.m., CBC)

This is a big of a test as there is in game #8 of the season for Carlyle’s team. How the Leafs look against the 5-1-1 Boston Bruins tonight is going to be an early measuring stick when it comes to the team’s level of improvement this season over last.

In the process of losing all six games to the Bruins last season, the Leafs never allowed less than four and were lit up by scores of 7-0, 8-0, 6-3 and 6-2 throughout the season series. The way in which the Leafs were roundly outplayed in all facets of the game, and at times physically outmatched to an extent hard to imagine of an NHL team, in those blowouts was an embarrassment to all wearing Blue and White; the types of performances against a hated division rival the Leafs must avoid if, as Carlyle pledged, his team isn’t going to be a laughingstock.

The player exchanges between the teams in terms of trades has really added to the heated nature of the rivalry. With Dougie Hamilton making his debut in the ACC for the Bruins tonight, Tyler Seguin in the building and Phil Kessel yet to break his goose egg for the season, you’ve been warned ahead of time to mute the HNIC broadcast (Rask will also be in net). There couldn’t be a better time to break out of it than tonight for Kessel.

I would imagine little will change in the way of the lineup that has won two straight. One of Mike Komisarek or Mark Fraser may draw back in if Carlyle feels the need for some added snarl on the backend.

Speaking of which, the Leafs’ waiver claimee Frazer McLaren is expected to debut on the fourth line tonight.

McLaren will likely serve a role similar to Jay Rosehill when he was here, spending significant time with the Marlies but able step in when Orr and/or Brown is banged up.

Randy Carlyle obviously feels there’s still an important role in the league for the enforcer, with Dave Nonis moving quickly once Brown went down to add McLaren in time for the Bruins game tonight.

The fact that the Leafs’ skill is well spread out throughout the top nine, plus his strict line matching scheme (particularly at home), seems to make Carlyle comfortable with a fourth line playing south of five minutes a night. It makes sense against a team you’re expecting to engage in some punch ups, like tonight, but in some circumstances, like the back-to-back Isles game last week, there are benefits to being able to roll your lines a little more.

Go Leafs and Go Kessel. For the love of God, Leafs, don’t get blown out.

And Franson in Dions spot. On the PP Franson is calmer, has better vision, holds the line better and a has better release

He’s thrown quite a few big hits this season already. I don’t think he’s lost his edge so much as he’s just become more responsible. The team cannot afford to be without him for any period of time.

Going to have to play another frustrated team waiting for a breakout on Monday, too.

Leafs out hit them 45-29 and closed the faceoff gap to 45% to 55% after a terrible first period, just not enough quality chances

Phaneuf isn’t as exciting as he used to be, but he’s a much better player than he was in Calgary. He’s way more mature defensively.

I think if we added another top notch minute muncher, you’d see Phaneuf open up a bit.

Well guys I know everybody is a little upset, but I thought we discovered some courage. Reimer was strong and he is picking up momentum. I thought we discovered a couple diamonds in the rough tonight. I am pretty convinced Fraser has secured a place on our bottom pair D. Also I think Komarov is a player…loved this guys game tonight, definitely a building block third line type guy who I think will chip in goals in time. Also he is good on the draw too.
Not sure why everyone is dumping on Kostka…thought he played well…it is tough to play D against the bruins but we gave up one goal and he wasnt on the ice. There wasnt too many chances.

I do not understand the love of Franson. I understand coaching players into their positions of strength, and he has the ability to get the puck on net (i.e. the PP), but he does not possess even rudimentary skill for skating, hockey intelligence or defensive coverage. He’s a liability, which is his only consistent trait, and his pylon impression cost us the only goal of the game. But let’s keep him even though Phaneuf, Liles, Gardiner and Rielly can all do what he does without coughing up the puck like a bad habit.
Trade him for a cardboard cut-out of Kulemin.

Maybe we’ll be the frustrated team this time. We played well against a team that also played well. I’m OK with this loss, as long as we respond the next game.

Phaneuf doesn’t take himself out of position to force hits anymore, and people are upset about it. What a joke. He will still lay out big hits, he just waits for the right opportunity now… Mike Sauer still hasn’t played since Phaneuf leveled him in December last season.

So whose running give and goes down low with Kessel for a netdrive? Kadri should be in the corner not on the opposite side. If we want Phil working a one timer, Phaneuf can sneak through the back, or JVR can release from the net into the slot when the puck is moved to Kadri down low. That suggestion ( atleast in terms of where you placed the bodies) is very perimeter based. Not to mention, Franson should be the other presence/bullet on the point. Every shot he takes has a chance, and he’s the only dman on our team with that type of dangerousness. His ability to make the first pass on the breakout is one of his strong points, and its something Kostka continually shows he can’t do. Other than that, i agree with the people you mentioned.

    Kadri

You’re not supposed to say anything negative about Kadri. It doesn’t put him in a position to succeed.
