Game In 10: Game 12, Leafs 6 at Habs 0
On some days it does actually feel great to be a Leafs fan. Such an occasion was February 9, 2013, a Hockey Day in Canada when the Leafs utterly dominated the Habs. Final score: 6-0 Leafs.
1 – The Leafs are 7-5-0 and it’s all smiles today. 2nd most road wins in the league.
2 – Good, composed, energetic start from the Buds. One minute in, the Habs give the puck away at the Leafs blueline, Kulemin stays really strong on his skates, drives to the net and passes to an open Komarov, who makes no mistake. Leo was making a difference again, playing exactly as advertised.
3 – Bozak makes it 2-0 after YET ANOTHER faceoff win. James van Riemsdyk’s good redirect is what actually got that puck to Bozie. His 4th goal of the year prompted some Go Leafs Go chants in Montreal. A lot of preseason ‘maybes’ seem to be receiving positive answers. Reimer, Kadri, Bozak, Komarov… Not to mention many people didn’t know what to expect from McClement. Now they do.
4 – I don’t usually agree with Don Cherry but the fact is that this team has a partially changed identity. I’m not necessarily talking about the 4th line, pugilism and lack of hockey skill but I am talking about blocking shots, finishing checks and winning board battles. It’s more a case of Komarov and Kulemin than Orr or McLaren. Good old Euro boys. I also don’t really mind Kostka going after Gallagher after about the 30th time the Habs crowded our goalie. The man needs his space after stoning Montreal shooters all night long.
5 – Great work by van Riemsdyk and Kessel for the third goal. Wonderful vision by Kessel to find him open in the slot after yet another good cycle by that line. Remember how last year’s team had trouble maintaining puck possession in the offensive zone? Also, D-zone breakouts against a good, aggressive forecheck made my head hurt, not anymore though.
6 – What can you say about James Reimer? Maybe the best review of his play of late is the fact nobody is thinking about Robert Luongo. Well, except Mike Gills. Stellar in the 21-shot second period, he held the fort for the Leafs making 36 saves. His save percentage sits at a sparkling .929.
7 – Kessel scored a powerplay marker after Liles got high-sticked by Bourque. JVR continued doing many good things on the ice, this time providing the screen in front of Price. 2nd goal in 2 games – thought I’d mention it because, in Kessel’s case, apparently it’s only goals that count. With an assist on that goal, Dion Phaneuf ends a bad career-high; his 10-game pointless run.
8 – Fraser and Prust fought at the start of the 3rd. I got the feeling that Fraser landed more punches, but both guys held their own. To be honest, I’m glad McLaren didn’t completely wreck Gorges towards the end. Tempers flared, Gorges took on more than he could chew. Classy move from McLaren who wore an American Pyscho style smile to boot.
9 – You know what I love? I love when I don’t need to watch a PP without having to worry about them losing the puck, slow cycles, or wild passes. Surprisingly, crisp, hard passes are slowly but surely becoming the norm. 2 powerplay goals tonight, second one coming off Phaneuf’s stick and giving Kessel three points on the night. Wonder if crisp is what Pacioretty tastes like? Grabo might know.
10 – This sequence tells you everything you need to know about the game today. Firstly, Komarov stops Grabo from retaliating. Then, Orr drives to the net and Holzer picks up the pieces for his 2nd goal of the season. Yes. For a Leafs fan, this game had all the trimmings.
10B – The Leafs didn’t just beat the Habs, they bullied them around in their own building. The “sized up,” “tougher” Habs tried to turn this into a sideshow and we had none of it. It’s not just because McLaren and Orr are on the bench. It’s the mentality, one Carlyle encourages unlike Wilson, and it’s infectious across the whole team. Holzer, Fraser, Komarov are helping, but the Leafs as a whole are showing a lot more backbone than in years past.
Enjoy this one, Leafs Nation.

@Bring the Cup Home The Kessel double threat was apparent last night on his goal. He used his body to fake the pass, and then beat Price with the shot when he caught him anticipating the pass. I much prefer his game this year to years past.
hopd orr is signed for another season or 2… at a lower price tho… 700,00 or 800,000 thousand seems reasonable… the million he makes now is stupid tho.. he is a usefull guy as we saw tonight.. bullying our main rivals.. good move to the net for korbys goal.. gets a point.. whoops some ass.. would love him to give devane pointers.. as devane seems like a kid who can be a heavyweight and can play… has been very good for the marlies.
#9. Kessel had 3 points. I looked at some of McLaren’s fights when we got him and in one of them he did the same thing, held up on someone who was obviously way overmatched. Loved the way Colton just dumped Gionta to the ice when Bourque joined in, then popped him once and sent him down. “‘Next”.
kadris hit on emelin should have been put in this article…he is playing extremely chippy and skilled… hes steaking a claim for the top 6 and doesnt want to let go.. mac A can go for a 2nd….ill pack his bags.. kadri has passed him…. maybe even a few others.. love the style we play… carlyle is a beaut
mac and liles i agree are now done need to be moved… loved the team game… love guys playing for each other… love having guys in the lineup who can toss em and kick ass for the boys when mutts try to take advantage of our guys… i remember a post a week ago about how orr is useless and the such…. suck it dude lol…
My life is complete. This game was as close to as satisfying as a Stanley Cup win as you can get in the regular season.
The big Differense this year that Marlies are ready to compete thanks to Eakins. Komorov is gold for this team. A 2013 version of Esa Tikkanen. With Kadri they can piss off any team. And the way Leo held back Grabo was fantastique. Holzer our own German Panzer good goal, good on the D. franson also had a strong game onthe defense. When Gunnar and Lupul are getting back, Nonis has to move MacA and Liles. I can see no other solution. Leafs play hard, fast hockey it was a pleasure to watch. Much more important they played like a team
wow best game the leafs have played since the last lockout… so proud of the way we played tonight.. old school, skilled hockey…. if you guys want a laugh watch the replay on tsn and listen to the mutt habs take on us bullying them… haha i want this bully identity to continue….
for the record, i want nothing to do with stephen weiss. i’d rather hold out for a total stud 1C, or go with what we got.
And one more thing before I hit the hay…that Patcheredy has got to be one of the dumbest fools around. He grabs a man from behind, across his mouth, pulls back as hard as he can and then cry’s about teeth marks. That’s like crabbing a hack saw by the blade with your bare hands and then wondering how you got cut.
@jcg_4 I agree him and Holtzer are making a difference, maybe not to stylish but that’s the kind of hockey I like.
@wiski Frazer made the team out of camp and was not exposed to waivers. If he were sent down he would have to clear waivers. To be honest I think he is too valuable to the team to take out of the line up. The fear factor he provides on the back end is good; players are not as willing to go hard to the net with their head on a swivel.
@Bring the Cup Home morgan reilly stuart percy tyler biggs josh leivo connor brown matt finn bradd ross greg mckegg jesse blacker jussi rynnas garrett sparks josh nicholls the top 4 on that list i think will all be nhl players, with the top one being a potential all star. out of the bottom 7 it’ll be hit and miss, but one of those list will surprise us i bet, and others maybe or maybe don’t make it. but an impressive stable of youngsters right there.
@Bring the Cup Home Good post and you could switch Kuli and Komarov in that line up but it looks solid.
@GeorgeCostanza What about Matt Finn? Morgan Reilly? Tyler Biggs? 3 good to great prospects who are on the bus.
Stuart Percy – 9th in defenceman scoring 37 points in 53 games Joshua Leivo – 16th in forward scoring 61 points in 48 games now. Connor Brown – 14th in forward scoring 62 points in 54 games.
nice. time for all the kessel talk to turn to ‘what a complete player’ he is becoming and that ‘he is showing what a fully developed kessel could look like’. as it should. kid is playing a responsible game. better +/- than years gone by. better in his own zone for sure. and turning into quite a playmaker. he is really learning to pick up highlight reel assists, and that is a dangerous thing. given two high quality linemates him as a double threat to shoot or pass is deadly. will be interesting to see how JVR continues in Lupul’s absence. he may make carlyle’s decision very difficult. could be looking at: JVR – Bozak – Kessel Lupul – Grabs – Kulemin Komorov – Kadri – Frattin Orr – McC – MacA/McLaren for the 2nd half of the season and into the playoffs?? probably trade MacA at the deadline. if we get a 2nd rounder. i would if frattin looks like he has the game to stick around the bigs and contribute at a MacA level. that’s the beauty of Burke’s work the past few years. We have lots of good young guys coming up and it will give us flexibility to play with the cap and also to play with trades over the next 14 months. By trade deadline, 2014, we will be built as a solid contender in the East for the next several years. As long as Reimer proves he’s a number 1.
I guess there weren’t any smart ass tweets from Cheese Armstrong after the game. Bet he was looking forward to it.
let’s let kadri and frattin develop at a slow and steady pace. keep ‘em on the 3rd line all year long unless injuries force the issue. then play with more PP time for kadri.
I can see Gardiner replacing Kostka when he’s healthy and ready. That is if Holzer and Fraser keep playing well.
Yes. JVR and Lupul create options… Kadri and Frattin too.. That is why i never understood when one player is getting better, people start saying well now we have him, we dont need X… We want a full team of good contributing players.
