Matt Frattin Out; James Reimer’s Replacement & Trading for Ryan O’Reilly
As if injuries to Carl Gunnarsson, Joffrey Lupul, Jake Gardiner and now James Reimer weren’t enough, the Leafs just announced Matt Frattin is expected to be out for at least a week after undergoing a minor procedure on his previously surgically repaired knee, although James Mirtle speculated he might be out a little longer than that.
Frattin is currently second on the team in goals scored with 7 and tied for third in points with JVR with 10 points. He’s formed a bit of a dynamic duo with Nazem Kadri as both take the body, go to the dirty areas, and complement each other well between Kadri’s setup skills and Frattin’s finishing ability.
Mike Brown is expected back soon and David Steckel has been a healthy scratch, but this could give the Leafs an opportunity to call-up Joe Colborne and give him another look at the NHL level should they so choose. He has 16 points in his last 15 games with the Marlies.
Otherwise, it sounds as if McClement might move up on the Kadri-MacArthur line and Steckel will probably fill the roster hole in the 4C. That’s just speculation and we’ll have to see what Carlyle has in mind.
The Leafs also called up Jussi Rynnas to replace the injured James Reimer. With Reimer only expected to be out for a week or so, it doesn’t make sense yet for the Leafs to bring in a veteran and create a logjam of goalies in the organization a week from now.
Tt’s pretty safe to say that Scrivens will get all the starts for now. He could always play terribly and force Carlyle’s hand, but the glass half full approach says that this is a chance for Scrivens to really start proving himself and maybe even push Reimer for starts.
In other news, if you feel like procrastinating today, Josh Rimer tweeted out that the Leafs have indeed inquired about Ryan O’Reilly. He’s been the hot topic lately, and would obviously come in to be the expected first line center of the team, but the main question on everyone’s mind is whether or not it would require Jake Gardiner to be going back the other way, and if that’s worth it.
Discuss.

@bear1919 I think it'd be alot more value for me if it weren't a keeper league, lol.
Considering I basically traded the best defenceman in the NHL, who is gonna be great for another 10-15 years for a chance to win this year.

So, do you guys think Karlsson has a severed tendon, which means he''ll miss the rest of the season?
I normally wouldn't care, but I have him in my work keeper pool and he's currently in a pending trade. If he's gonna be out for the season, I'll hit accept right now!
He wasn't able to push of on that leg, which tells me it wasn't just a minor cut.
What does Ryan O'Reilly bring to the team as a first line centre that Tyler Bozak doesn't bring now?
Man..how different is our defense? LOL and how surprisingly solid is it wow.

What a pleasant surprise. Carlyle is a beauty.
@peterbleafs Maybe one of them is gonna be included in a the trade for Luongo, haha!
When Anaheim won the Cup, you've gotta remember Getzlaf and Perry were still very young and just breaking into the league.
Also, under Carlyle's system, the third line is the "scoring line" so that is no surprise. Look what Kadri and Frattin are doing under Carlyle on the third "scoring" line.
Why do any of you want ROR when we have 3C's who are doing terrific? We will have Lupul back and then we have 3 very very good lines to roll out there. And IMO 3 good lines is way better than 1 top line and 2 more okay lines. When Chicago won the cup, it was Bolland who saved the day more often than not, their 3rd line Center. And a point I heard on tsn radio was that when Anaheim won the cup, the Getzlaf line with Perry was their 3rd line.
@wiski Is it gonna be the same realignment as they had set up last year, before the NHLPA shot it down?
I'm guessing that with the CBA negotiations on the horizon last year, the NHLPA was just throwing their weight around, showing that they won't be pushed around and that they wanted a say in what was going to be done.
Now that they were included in the process, they'll probably just agree
@SDezy I was talking about the MLHS Baseball Keeper League, not the NHL.
Do you not think I'd be up to date on the NHL rules, haha ;)
@wiski I think I contributed a couple hundred texts last night, trying to work out a deal in my work keeper league, haha!
@Doorman Well, that fucking sucks.
I had my whole keeper situation picked, under the assumption that I'd be picking 4th overall. Was gonna drop my #1 pick from last year, with the hope picks #1-3 were keeping theirs and it would have given me the 1st overall pick.
Now it's a crap shoot and unless everybody else is keeping the player they drafted in the 1st round, I basically have to keep my 1st round player from last year.
why would Colorado take on the additional salary of ' Mac A, Gunnerson, another roster player And a prospect such as Gardine'r etc....if they're not willing to pay ROR more than 3 million ??
John Shannon @JSportsnet
Keys to realignment will be 4 Divisions...and playing home and home with every team in the league with playoffs inside division first.
@Doorman Baseball and Hockey were always on at the same time.
Baseball begins at the start of April and goes till mid-June.
This year hockey is gonna goto the end of June, so we'll get two extra weeks of hockey and baseball on at the same time.
Would be sick going to Toronto to watch an afternoon game in the afternoon and then a Leafs playoff game at night. Could even squeeze the end of a Marlies playoff game in after the Jays game is over, if they're playing at the Ricoh at 3PM.
