Morning Mashup: Off Day Draft Analysis

When the Leafs get a couple of days off, bloggers have a little bit of extra time to take a wider look at things.  I’ve spent a lot of time this year watching CHL games, pouring over AHL stats and looking at the player development side of hockey.  Unsurprisingly, that has led to a lot of conversations about the draft itself and it was one of these conversations that spurred me to look into some draft outcomes.

Over at Blue Chip Prospects, I decided to have a look at whether teams are more successful at drafting forwards or defensemen in various rounds of the draft.  I took ten years worth of draft data and put each player taken in the first three rounds of those drafts into one of four categories: All-Star, Impact Player, Replaceable Player, and Bust.

1st Round Forwards

Click to see the rest of these charts.

The idea behind the post was to try and find out whether a team is more likely to find an impact forward or an impact defenseman in each of these three rounds, but some of the peripheral information that came out of the spreadsheet was interesting as well and probably has some important implications with how we should value pick assets.  For example, I found that about 84% of all players taken in the third round never end up making a meaningful contribution at the NHL-level.  Moreover, only about 5% of players taken in the third round end up consistently skating in the top-6 forward group or as a top-4 defenseman.  That certainly provides some interesting perspective for a lot of the HF Board proposals we’re subjected to on a regular basis.

The post itself has all kinds of information, pretty graphs, and clever observations so please take the time to check it out.

This is management wanting to sign him to a deal like Duschene’s, cap geek it.  He wants a deal like what Schenn got from us last year.  Multiple years, $4mil +

“95% of the time the return in trades is far less than anticipated.”

That can’t be true.  Since there’s anticipation on both sides the worst (and best) that expectations can generally fare is 50%… unless both sides are disappointed.

Bozak+Gardiner for O’Reilly is not too far off fair value IMO. Doesn’t mean i’d be all for it, but it’s definitely something I’d consider. Only thing wrong with this is if Bozak leaves, where does that leave Kessel? Does he still want to retire a Leaf? If not then i don’t even consider this a trade option. I’d be looking at Grabovski+Gunnar as a package that makes more sense. However, Gunnar is injured, Grabovski makes what O’Reilly wants and i figured O’Reilly, Kadri and Grabovski is better depth than ROR, Kadri, Bozak.

Reading some of the comments…interesting discussion.
Regarding Gardiner, I have some observations. While I liked what I saw last year, I was cautiously optimistic because there have been a lot of dmen have a decent rookie year only to fall back or to stay about the same in there careers. What impressed me was his engine and the fact he played over 100 games coming out of college. Still I wasn’t convinced he had huge upside.
However I watched pretty much every game for the marlies this year in the first 22 games he played in. Now granted he was playing with a good partner in kostka and had good goaltending in Scrivs and good forwards. It was also a beefed up AHL. Point is that he still looked like he belonged in a league above everyone. He was doing things dmen dont normally do. I think the Leaf brass is trying to get him back to that level before calling him up. I think there is a good chance this guy could have a steep upside. Not someone we should trade at this time. I think he may prove to be a very special player. I would not rule out a Norris trophy…just sayin.

He was always good for a point a game. But he just led by example. And just by watching him you knew he was special. You knew no matter how hard you trained there was no way you could be as good as he was consistently.

Fair enough… seems like a reasonable package.. They get a dependable defenceman and a centre prospect from us, who inmy opinion might need a change of scenery, and we get a potential #1 or #2 centre…
I agree ROR does not deserve a substantial package or anything, but it is hard to argue he wouldn’t be a valuable player to have in our system with his potential and age.

I hear what you are saying and I agree.  I don’t think we are arguing here, just people should not be so attached to young unproven players.  That’s not to say trade the farm for every streaking player out there, but at some point some of these guys will either not pan out, or will leave to free agency or will be traded.  Only the cream of the crop will stick around.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for the rebuild, I am all for holding on to and developing guys like Gardiner and not trading high end picks or players for unknown commodities, or even known commodities for that matter, but at the end of the day we don’t know what Gardiner is and we should consider it a possibility.

I’m not trying to run down Sundin at all, he was great.  But I saw Keon, Kelly, Pulford, Sittler and Gilmour play.

For what it’s worth, there’s a book on the all-time greatest Leafs.  Keon topped the list, and I’m pretty sure that non-centres like Bower, Horton, Mahovlich and Salming also ranked ahead of Sundin.
