Morning Mashup: Off Day Draft Analysis

When the Leafs get a couple of days off, bloggers have a little bit of extra time to take a wider look at things.  I’ve spent a lot of time this year watching CHL games, pouring over AHL stats and looking at the player development side of hockey.  Unsurprisingly, that has led to a lot of conversations about the draft itself and it was one of these conversations that spurred me to look into some draft outcomes.

Over at Blue Chip Prospects, I decided to have a look at whether teams are more successful at drafting forwards or defensemen in various rounds of the draft.  I took ten years worth of draft data and put each player taken in the first three rounds of those drafts into one of four categories: All-Star, Impact Player, Replaceable Player, and Bust.

1st Round Forwards

Click to see the rest of these charts.

The idea behind the post was to try and find out whether a team is more likely to find an impact forward or an impact defenseman in each of these three rounds, but some of the peripheral information that came out of the spreadsheet was interesting as well and probably has some important implications with how we should value pick assets.  For example, I found that about 84% of all players taken in the third round never end up making a meaningful contribution at the NHL-level.  Moreover, only about 5% of players taken in the third round end up consistently skating in the top-6 forward group or as a top-4 defenseman.  That certainly provides some interesting perspective for a lot of the HF Board proposals we’re subjected to on a regular basis.

The post itself has all kinds of information, pretty graphs, and clever observations so please take the time to check it out.

You realize how contradictory that is right? saying we dont know what Gardiner is but we do somehow know what ROR is???????

    ONE….GOOD….SEASON

really why can’t people understand that.

Lol once again, whatever you think i was implying is wrong. Me writing them in the same sentence or w.e has nothing to do with him getting killed in this market, and it had nothing to do with Sundin, you are just stating something for a discomfort in something you don’t see yourself writing. Once again, i am me, you are you, leave it at that. I did not refer to him in a comparison, i referred to the fact we haven’t had any capable 1st line center since Sundin left. You decided to see that as a comparison regardless of whether or not you admit it. Sundin was irrelevant to my statement, he just happened to be the last number 1 center that was good enough for the role. O’Reilly is a solid two way center with the skills to do it all efficiently. Playing with Kessel and JVR could lead to him being that number 1 centerman we’ve needed, at least until one in the system proves to be better suited.
    -
    JVR-O’Reilly-Kessel
    Lupul-Kadri-Frattin
    Komarov-Grabovski-Kulemin
    -
That is a dynamite group of forwards. Tough to play against, extremely skilled, and fast.

“I think he may prove to be a very special player.”

I don’t think anyone disagrees with you. Key word is you “think”, like the rest of us!

Ryan O’Reilly just turned 22 last week, and led his team last season with 55 points. He is a very good 2-way player, with great possession numbers against tough competition. He’s a very good young player. I don’t think anyone can really debate this.

That being said, he definitely wouldn’t be my first choice to bring in for our #1C spot. Given our need for a #1C, and the fact that we have Liles locked up, and Rielly in our prospect pool, it wouldn’t be a tragedy to lose Gardiner in a deal for O’Reilly, but there are alternative routes I would definitely explore first.

Theres a reason its called know-ledge. Its because the know is on the ledge of becoming something different over the course of time. The only infinite source of truth is love, so unless i’m speaking from my heart, which really only sees potential in energy, rather than the facts i label based on judgement and perspective (a minds game), then really theres always going to be someone who opposes my view. Thats just life, knowLEDGEable to one, stupid to another.

At this point in his career, O’Reilly reminds me of a young, left handed Patrick Sharp. Not when he was in Philly, but when he first started out in Chicago and was finally getting the confidence to be a top 6 producer. Sharp was about 26 when he started putting it all together, but i think O’Reilly could put up similar numbers sooner then when Sharp started transforming into a star.
