Ottawa Senators (7-5-2) at Toronto Maple Leafs (8-6-0)

TV: CBC

Last 10: Ottawa 4-4-2; Toronto 6-4-0
Season series: This is the first of five matchups this season between these Northeast Division rivals, who will play each other twice in the next week. The teams tied the Battle of Ontario last season, splitting the six-game season series.

The big story of this game is ultimately the injury of the top players on both teams. Toronto is without starting goaltender, James Reimer, 1st line winger Joffrey Lupul, the team’s 2nd leading scorer, Matt Frattin, as well as the team’s steadiest defenceman, Carl Gunnarsson. Ottawa is similarly hit by the injury bug. They are without Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza; the Senators also are missing All-Star Milan Michalek (sprained knee), as well as Jared Cowan (hip surgery), Peter Regin (upper body) and Guillaume Latendresse (upper body)

Toronto will look to rebound against Ottawa after their abysmal showing against Carolina where they came out completely flat. Also of note, tonight’s game will honour the 1963 Stanley Cup Champions. Several players from the Leafs’ 1963 team will be honoured at Saturday’s game and will participate in the pregame ceremonial faceoff. Players expected to be in attendance include: George Armstrong, Johnny Bower, Dick Duff, Larry Hillman, Red Kelly, Dave Keon, John MacMillan, Bob Nevin, Bob Pulford and Eddie Shack. These long, drawn out ceremonies do nothing to help the Leaf’s issues that they have been having on home ice.

Who’s hot: Veteran Senators defenseman Sergei Gonchar has three points in his last four games. Center Kyle Turris has four points in his last six games. Kadri four points in his last four games. Dion Phaneuf has four points during his current three-game point streak. Phil Kessel has seven points in his last five games.

Forwards:

I assume his story is…that he knew somebody was behind the door and just started to fire his gun out of fear..never laid eyes on the person he was shooting….just thought I’ve got an intruder in the house and started shooting…question is…where did you think your girlfriend was at the time…when did she arrive home..and why would you start firing your gun in your own house without knowing her where abouts….just a whole lot of questions here…

And even that scenario at best is still manslaughter. If he’s the identified shooter (easily proven) then he’s screwed regardless. It’s now just a question of how screwed…

If by some miracle he can prove that he didn’t know who it was …and that he indeed did think it was an intruder…he could walk…you are allowed to defend your homeproperty by lethal force in many countries….there are precedents there….the only thing I question here is the police in south america…I don’t really have a feel for whether they are competent or not…are we dealing with mexican and cuban style cops here?? Maybe they’re fine….I really don’t know..

Devil’s advocate… so if I didn’t know who it was, because I couldn’t see them, then how did I determine their intentions? So I heard a noise, didn’t attempt to contact or identify the person and shot them indiscriminately through a door? Flat out manslaughter. The self defense approach would require him to establish a credible threat. He’s toast. :-)
