Making the Most of February

The month’s half over, and after Monday’s game, the season is a third over. The Leafs are sitting three games over .500, holding 6th place in the East, and are currently on pace for 58 points (rounded up from 57.6) in a season where many prognosticators have considered 54 the magic number for making the post season.

So far, the Leafs are sitting pretty despite now being without Reimer, Gunnarsson, Frattin and Lupul. The Leafs have benefited from a friendly schedule. The average 2011-12 point total of their opposition has be 91, which averages out to facing a bubble team every night. This also doesn’t account for the dramatic drop off in teams like Washington, Philadelphia, and now Ottawa. Compare that to the average of 95 points in March and the average of 94 in April and it makes sense that the Leafs are coming out of the gates strong.

Obviously, it goes without saying that the Leafs should try and keep this up, but arguably the next two weeks are their last best chance to put themselves in a situation where they are playing to keep their playoff spot, rather than trying to play their way in against tougher opponents.

Monday’s game against Florida is a good start. Granted, the Leafs were swept in the four games against the Panthers last season, and with 94 points last season they’d be considered an average team. But after somewhat of a miracle season last year, the Panthers have regressed and weak goaltending and injuries to Versteeg and Jovanovski benefit the Leafs.

The Lightning are a team the Leafs did have success against last season, sweeping the season series. Without too many changes to their lineup, this could potentially be another game that Leafs should look at with optimism. Potentially, the challenge will be if Scrivens can handle the Stamkos/St. Louis driven offense.

Hosting the Sabres could be one of the bigger challenges as historically games against Buffalo have been a disappointment, but next Saturday’s game against Ottawa will hopefully go as smoothly as this past one.

The final week of February sees the Leafs facing the Flyers, Habs, and Islanders. The last games against the Flyers, as well as Philadelphia’s performance this season, have made this seem like a plausible win instead of a pending disaster like last season. The Habs game will be interesting to say the least after the last match-up,  but with two wins against Montreal to start the year this season, it again seems like a favourable situation. The Leafs wrap up the month against the Islanders, and with the Leafs having lost once already to New York, I hold out hope that they won’t run the risk of being dominated by team that still is in need of a number of improvements.

The Leafs will need six more wins than regulation losses at the end of the season to get to the 56 points needed to ensure a playoff berth. Currently sitting 3 over, the Leafs could conceivably go 5-2 in the next couple of weeks, and then only be required to play .500 hockey the rest of the season. While I feel like I may have just jinxed the Leafs by stating it possible, I feel confident that the nature of this shortened season makes the playoffs more attainable than we’ve seen in almost a decade. At least, I’ll feel this way until March when the Leafs get to face the Bruins three times.

Your Family Day Links…

The Terrible Tyler Bozak
Hockey Analysis has some strong words on Bozak. I wouldn’t say I agree completely with the conclusions, but I certainly don’t want to see Bozak brought back next season. I’d just say he could be a 2nd line centre on certain teams.

The Leaf that we need to be the silent assassin when it counts…
Michael at VLM is looking for a Leaf who can put opponents out of their misery.

Success At The Draft: 10 Years Of Maple Leafs Draft Picks
Curt wants people to stop saying the Leafs can’t develop draft picks. This post made me nostalgic for when I went to the draft in Boston and watched the Leafs draft Luca Cerada.

Tyler Bozak used to the trade talk
The Star looks at Bozak rumours. I imagine there’s plenty of interest in him, just not the type that brings O’Rielly or Luongo to the Leafs.

Scrivens Stands Tall with his First Career Shutout
Jonas Siegel talks to Scribbles about his shutout and has some other Leafs notes as well.

Carlyle’s trust in Leafs’ enforcers grows by the game
James Mirtle takes a good look at Carlyle’s use of enforcers. I can see “It’s a man’s game” replacing Truculence and Pugnacity as the favourite buzzwords in Toronto.

Rielly gets two goals in win over the Raiders
Just a reminder that Morgan Rielly is a very good hockey player.

How the Leafs are filling their injury void
The National Post takes a look at the depth/luck combo the Leafs have been going with.

This week it Wade Arnott helped stick a fork in the Kessel rumours, nonetheless here’s the worst HFBoards Kessel trade proposal from last week.

Finn has had mono for about three months but is starting to get back. My brother (who lives in Guelph) saw him at an event recently, and spoke to him about it. Finn might even be back now, but he’s lost a lot of weight, not surprisingly…

It’s some weird shit with Russian players. His name is Aleksander (Alex, for short), but I have heard many different Russian players be called Sasha instead of their actual name from time to time. I’m not sure why.

Would you trade any of the following???Grabovski (alot of money if he’s just a shut down guy…just saying)
Kulimen, MacA, Komisarek (I think we all know the answer)
Gunnarson, Liles, Steckel,  Brown???This team needs more of an identity and more Balls…Let;s not fall in love with all of our players as to not see the light at the end of the tunnel…We need more fight in some of these players and that won’t happen.

Ok, and when high profile players like Getzlaf and Perry do get this far without contract renewals, how often do the two sides come together at the last minute and get the contract done, vs how often the players end up walking or being traded?

See as house athletes know the volatility and movement involved in the game. Sundin didn’t retire a Leaf. Doesn’t look like Iginla will retire a Flame. Luongo signed a massive deal in Vancouver and look where that got him.

More often than not they leave.  The only instance I can think of where a last minute agreement was reached was with the Sedins.

hi everyone, happy family day! I’m excited about the Leafs’ season so far. Also, lots of winnable games coming up. Let’s hope we get some good results. I went to the Marlies game on Saturday and made some notes on some of our prospects. I’ll post them in case anyone is interested.

I tend to agree. I think it’s obvious there are issues, Cam. If next year this time Kessel doesn’t have a deal signed to stay in TO, there will be mass hysteria with people assuming he’s on his way out of town.

I know..but as 20 yr old first rounder with first line PP etc he SHOULD be dominant.
Was beaten wide several times Sat night and looked a bit slow.
Also muscled out in the slot.
The Colts are a pretty good team, but it was eye opening and a bit concerning….especially as repeated from a regular observer.

Notable players (mind you, this was only a single game):

D’amigo – he really impressed me. he is fast, he hustles for EVERY loose puck (at one point he dove in the netrual zone to tip a puck to a teammate – usually you might see someone dive like this to clear a puck from the D zone on a penalty kill, but he did it in the neutral zone on a 5-5). he finishes every check (like Komarov in a sense) and did I mention he is FAST? He negated at least 3 icings that I counted by beating the defenseman in a race to the puck. he is a very good penalty killer – out on the first unit with an active stick, lots of pressure on the defense, quick reactions. I would love to have this guy on our 4th line next year.

Blacker – for me, the player that most stood out to me. I expected to see him play a decent game but he was great. He was paired with Gardiner and they play really well together. I could see them paired up with the big club for a long time. He has solid positioning, he anticipates plays and steps up when necessary without getting beat. He was very good at keeping pucks inside the offensive zone (especially on the PP), he makes good first passes. What stood out to me maybe the most is that he is a physical player. he is not afraid of contact and always goes into the corners. A couple of times I saw him go into the corner and come out with th epuck even though there were two opposing forwards on him. He plays physical, but not overly aggressive. He had the biggest hit of the game in the 1st period. This guy looks like he will be a player. Reminds me of gunnar in the sense that he is quiet and does his job well, however, he handles the puck a little bit better and seems to have a better shot.

Yep, and “Don’t worry, Kessel has a wife and a house” won’t be good enough to dissuade people otherwise, either.

Ashton – Ashton surprised me. He looked a lot different than last year when he was with the leafs. He is a great penalty killer, which I didn’t expect him to be. He is surprisingly fast and he plays very physical. he was hitting everyone and everything in sight and even though he seems skinny, he is very strong as he kept knocking people down. defensively responsible, plays the body and always takes his man. in my opinion, he could still put on more weight and become a very strong PFWD, but we’ll see how the next couple of years go for him.

Colborne – Colborne disappointed me. He has some skill with the puck, makes decent passes but did not seem too involved in the plays. a couple of times he could have had juicy rebounds and scoring opportunities but he was a fraction of a second late. better anticipation or quicker reactions and he would have been in position to score. He won lots of offensive zone faceoffs and made some good passes, but did little else.
