Game In 10: Game #19, Leafs 2 at Sens 3
Share

The second edition of the Battle of Ontario. Last time these teams met (Feb. 16th), the final score was 3-0 in the ACC. Now, last time the Sens were simply missing their top line C and last year’s Norris Trophy winner. Tonight, that list included one of the season’s best goaltenders, Craig Anderson. Fair to say that this was another winnable game. Not to be as the Leafs fall 3-2.

1) The Leafs are 11-8-0 and this was disappointing.

2) 4th minute – McClement keeps the puck alive on the boards and Grabovski scores from up close as he gets some luck with the double chance for a shot… the initial one stays in his feet after a rebound. A Bishop isn’t a king (or Anderson for that matter) after all.

3) Mika Zibanejad tied things up with a good shot from the right circle with no defenceman (Kostka or his stick) in sight. Kostka needed to tighten the gap on the winger there. This completely turned the momentum in Ottawa’s favor and Scrivens had to make great saves to keep the score tied until the end of the 1st.

4) The PK was good in the middle of the game after Kulemin was called for tripping. Good to see the PK improving under Carlyle. The second period was probably too weak defensively to merit approval from coach C but hey, the crowd sure got their money’s worth – end to end hockey is fun as long as you don’t get scored on. Condra drove to the net and gets the maximum result as the puck somehow winds up in the net with Holzer driving him into Scrivens.

5) First two contrasting periods offered two different editions of the Leafs. One that can somewhat play defense and one that doesn’t care about the defense.

6) Scrivens had a decent outing. Blame him for the questionable rebound on Condra’s goal if you must, but that’s misplaced blame if you ask me. There were far worse areas of tonight’s effort than the performance in the crease. I only blame him for freezing that puck late.

7) The powerplay got its first chance during the middle of the third. And wouldn’t you know it, the Leafs tied it up. A gritty effort was rewarded by a lunch pail type MacArthur goal. Special teams are working and making a difference. However, a huge PP opportunity towards the end of the 3rd went unused.

8) Didn’t like the number of turnovers the team made throughout the entire game. Good pressure by the Sens to break the Leafs down, but passes weren’t on the tape and overall, this wasn’t a good game for the boys in Blue and White.

9) Colin Greening scored the game winner less than 30 seconds from overtime. That was crappy. Special teams were good enough to get the point, at least.

10) Basically, the Leafs had trouble against the Binghamton Senators tonight. Those same Senators won their last three games prior to this one, though, and we aren’t exactly without injuries. While it’s too early to say we’re seeing old habits creeping in, it’s important to nip this in the bud and step it up in Philly.

    Guess Florida should have traded him when he was in demand…

    I would question his trade value for sure right now plus it sounds like he wants to hit the open market anyway. Wasn’t it reported he was looking for 4 years and 24 million? Gotta wonder if that’s in jeopardy now…

    i prefer to sit further back about midway up the lower bowl on the sidelines….its nice to be up against the glass to see the players….but if you want to watch the play evolve best to sit further up, first row of the red’s or upper platinums would be ideal for me,….but thats just me

    Florida fans are saying they would like to see Weiss be traded for possibly MacArthur and Liles/Gunnarson

    IMO, I think Weiss just needs to get out from that organization. He is a Toronto boy who has mentioned in the past that Toronto is his ideal team to play for.

    Thoughts?

    If Nonis and management actually want Weiss long-term then I could see them giving up a mid round draft pick and maybe a b level prospect but no more. Otherwise, they might as well take their chances in free agency with him.

    Here’s the scary thing about signing Weiss to a long-term deal…The most points he’s put up in a season was 61. He’s only averaged 59 pts in the 4 seasons prior to this year. So…Has he only ever scored 61 pts because he plays on a team that sucks with limited talent or do you look at it the other way…He was able to get as many as 61 pts because he got lots of minutes because the team sucked and their wasn’t other talent to eat up those minutes. What are you really getting if you give him 4+ years at 5 Million+ per year?

    hate to say but I havent seen enough of Weiss play to make a judgement on if his points are quality points and not a byproduct of other factors that u discussed…..kinda the same boat as ROR for me…..havent seen enough of either to have an opinion

    @Wilhen:disqus

    Considering how bad his numbers are this year… I wouldn’t be giving up a prospect and a pick for him. It would have to be a Liles/Komi plus a MacArthur IMO.

    I would sign him to a one year deal and see what happens when he’s had a good team around him with a fantastic system implemented by a great coach to play with. Then go from there. But I don’t see how we can have Grabovski and Weiss on the same team. One would need to go… and at this point, I think Grabovski is the better player. However, Weiss would have a higher ceiling potential. If you know what I mean.

    Florida fans use to rave about how he would do whatever it took to win games and make his line mates better. If we could get the Weiss going then I think we would all be down.

    @Wibur:disqus

    Yea, that’s what Weiss said he was looking for at the beginning of the year… however, he is a minus 13 on the year now I believe with only a few points. He’s been benched and a few florida fans that I’ve spoken to have said he looks lazy and uninterested to play for them. Which makes sense when you look at his stats and compare them to years past. He clearly wants to leave.
    I still can’t see a team offering him that 4-5 year deal just yet… Could be wrong.
