Kudos if you’re reading this before noon, and my condolences if the only reason you’re reading it early is because you forgot to book Monday off work. Happy Advil Day! I’ll have an actual post later in the week, but the Leafs not playing until Wednesday hasn’t left me with much to say beyond the usual, “Holzer sucks, Free Gardiner, and Trade Bozak.”

Since I felt compelled to provide one unique thought before bolting out the door to pretend I’m Irish, I’ll encourage you to check out the Future Watch issue of The Hockey News.

I largely despise The Hockey News but still always manage to shell out a couple of bucks for the Future Watch and Draft Preview issues, and as a result suffer small rage fits from how the Leafs are treated by this publication.

This year Morgan Rielly was ranked 19th on their list of 75 ranked prospects. He was the only one of the Leafs prospects in the top 75. There were a number of names that I was surprised to see ahead of Rielly, the most notable being Ryan Murray, Jacob Trouba, and Hampus Lindholm, all defensemen from the 2012 draft. I was also surprised to see that Matt Finn couldn’t crack the top 75, but with a year filled with unfortunate injuries and illness it’s understandable.

As an organization the Leafs were ranked 25th in the league for prospect talent. With a rather vague description of how this is considered, I would have to assume Jake Gardiner and Nazem Kadri are excluded from this ranking, although they apparently include NHLers under the age of 21 and prospects that are older than Kadri and Gardiner in their ranking.

Essentially I’ve chosen to take this two ways, the first being that the Hockey News has put together highly subjective ratings that are the opinions of 15 individuals. These rankings hold no real value, and essentially just sell magazines to suckers like me who want to read short blurbs on other teams players that I don’t follow closely.

The second way I’ve taken this is as a reminder that the Leafs have few high reward prospects in the system outside of Rielly. Finn, Percy, Colborne, and Biggs all stand a good chance of playing in the NHL some day, but none are regarding as potential stars of the league. Essentially, the Leafs have a solid depth pipeline, but are still reliant on trades and free agency as their means of bringing in star players.

While I think we’ve all acknowledged that we’re pleased with the depth on the Marlies and kicking around the junior and college ranks, I think we’re also at the point that at the next draft it would be nice to see Nonis gamble on some players that could have a higher upside than we’ve seen in recent years.

I’ll leave it there since my liver is feeling neglected, but it’s safe to say the Hockey News rankings should be taken with a grain of salt, but also a reminder that while the Leafs have solid prospects in the pipeline, the same can be said for almost every other team.

I have to say I agree with most of this, especially the trading of Scrivens, but I would count myself as a strong dissenter of any consideration of trading Phaneuf.

Can’t disgree at all, basically just saying that without goaltending it’s going to be difficult. He’ll have to be one of the best players going forward.

Well I am just back so fine with me.

Nonis could make a block buster with St Louis.

Halak, Berglund for Reimer, Bozak and 3rd round.

A bit on the cheap side but we pay some salary for St Louis

I was at a hockey tournament on the weekend and missed a lot of the game Saturday. Had to rub my inebriated eyes to believe that Phaneuf and Franson were taking shootout shots while Grabo was chained to the bench. What’s the consensus here as to why that was, is Grabo that deep in Carlyle’s doghouse?

Thats been my beef all year. Not that the team as a whole has looked great but your goalie is your foundation.. if you can’t rely on them then the rest of the system falls apart. Some people would say its not fair to put that pressure on a goalie, but thats how it rolls…and its why i’m pissed we don’t have a vet in our goalie lineup. If Reimer or Scrivens are to have a chance at becoming legit #1′s then they need proper support..as of now they don’t have it and consequently aren’t doing great.

Not sure Reimer Bozak & a 3rd would get either of those players by themselves, let alone together

I remember Scotty Bowman saying that you need timely goal-tending to win. A goalie needs to shut the door late in the 3rd period, even if he let in 5 goals already. I have no faith in Scrivens “shutting the door” when the game is tied or Leafs down by one, because if Leafs are down by one, Scivens will let one in, then Leafs will be down by 2. I have to annoint Reimer as number 1 by default.

Im bad bad bad at trade proposals. I hem and haw over them in my pools even. But I’d be fine getting Halak, although I think they’d want to let Elliot go instead.

    Halak is 3.75, Elliott 1.8.

They have a lot of RFA to sign this summer and they are a cap floor team. They would Elliott, Reimer and Allen for the price of Halak.

Yeah, it’s tough to develop a young goaltender because they need to play. Some look at Luongo as a saviour  but he was young once too. But you are right, the team could do a much better job of helping out the goaltenders, and I don’t specifically mean by having a vet in the lineup but more so by playing responsible defensive zone hockey. I have no doubt that if Scrivens had some waiver eligibility they would have a vet in the Leaf lineup but Nonis is managing assets as well. Delicate balancing act.

I hate to say this but at this time last year when Leafs “18 wheeler” melt-down happened, there was a goalie controversy…now its happening again…another goalie controversy…..

Go to Capgeek and take a look at their roster and their cap hits.

You wouldn’t trade any of the players on contract because for what they bring they are dirt cheap. Next year Backes gets 4.5 million. Oshie 4.125

Next season they have spent 31 million and the floor will be around 44 million. For St. Louis that equals 16 million to sign Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Cole, Russell, Stewart, Berglund and Allen.

The difference between this years flaming truck and last years is that THIS year we are actually IN games. 4 out of those 5 losses could have easily been wins, (zebras, posts etc) just as many of our early season wins could have been losses.

That doesnt mean we are in tank nation or have a goalie controversy.

Funny how these prospect reports dont rank Leafs with potential future stars.

For all we know Reilly could be next Paul Coffey!
Look at Kadri…. 10th in league for Centres.. in a 30 team league!!!    but 1-2 yrs ago..he was not a top 10 prospect…

Because they are losing money big time.  Operating income -10 million last year.

Then you have to pay interest etc thereafter so let assume a net loss of 15 million per year.

Will they save 5 million if they can – absolutely
