Sure, people look at the two transactions seperately and say that the Leafs have fared better in the trade market than the free agent market, but if they didn’t make the free agent signing in the first place, they wouldn’t have had the asset necessary to make that deal.

That demonstrates the most important benefit of free agent signings, the ability to acquire assets without giving any up in return. This increases organizational depth, and frees up other assets to be used in trades to shore up other positional needs.

A team can be built many ways, but the surest way to hamper a teams ability to improve is to abstain from any single way of doing so.

Komisarek has always been a classy guy and never used the press to show his frustrations. I hope the best for him and hope he gets a chance to help another club. Maybe the Islanders or Colorado.
