Leafs Acquire Jonathan Bernier from Kings

905

After weeks of speculation, The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Jonathan Bernier from the Los Angeles Kings for Matt Frattin, Ben Scrivens and a 2nd round pick in 2014 or 2015 (Leafs option).

Ron Hextall talks about the trade

  • MLHS_Luke

    Nonis makes his first Nono?

Bit of an overpayment maybe, but meh.  I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt here.

    • KenBreadner

MLHS_Luke  A BIT? You’re giving up Frattin and Scrivens for Scrivens. This makes no sense at all.

  • http://mapleleafshotstove.com/ DeclanK

    Huge overpayment IMHO. Huge.

    • TheCanucksnaphook

DeclanK Not going to steal this guy out of LA.   Had to overpay slightly.

    • Black_Hawk

TheCanucksnaphook DeclanK yup its not too bad

    • Black_Hawk

DeclanK not too bad we knew it was going to be frattin and a 2nd. Scrivens is gone anyways if we get bernier

    • Jay_Berg

It’s about supply and demand. Lots of teams were in on Bernier.

      • Black_Hawk

        Jay_Berg he is good

      • Black_Hawk

        Jay_Berg he is good

    • Pent_House

TheCanucksnaphook We have improved our goaltending a lot and we still have our first.

      • Black_Hawk

Pent_House TheCanucksnaphook yeah its not bad at all

    • newkb

Hoping for Luongo – part 2 with this trade…not certain lightning will strike twice with this move. Has a bit of an odour to it right now…

  • http://mapleleafshotstove.com/ Radar O’Rielly

    Goodbye Matty.

  • http://mapleleafshotstove.com/ Radar O’Rielly

    Goodbye Matty.

  • mike_84

i’m ok with Bernier. bit of an over payment but i’m happy we didn’t move our 1st for him which at one point was reported.

  • Black_Hawk

    Well there it is folks

  • mike_84

Jerry D must really like this move. looks like he may have a spot on the 3rd line

  • wiski

Hey https://twitter.com/GMDaveNonis! Another goalie? Really? How about finally get me a motherfucking centre all up in here?! Geez!! https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Leafs&src=hash

  • gilmourhalloffame

wow I guess it depends which Frattin we traded. I love trades!

    • Black_Hawk

gilmourhalloffame Frattin for Bernier is fair imo

    • wiski

      gilmourhalloffame ther’s more than one?

      • gilmourhalloffame

        wiski
LOL the Frattin in the first 10 games or the 3rd liner after knee surgery

  • Black_Hawk

so basicly what we thought it is, frattin and a 2nd. Scrivens was thrown in b/c LA needed a back up and thats probably what up the ante over Phillys

  • Tommy Cat

Its done.  He’s blue and white now.  Enough negative bullshit.
Best of luck to Ben and Matt with LA.

  • tmlfan

The 2nd rounder may have been too much, but all in all I don’t mind the trade too badly. Really depends how Bernier plays in the Blue and White

    • Black_Hawk

      tmlfan its fair

  • bb33tmlnhl

Meh, maybe we overpaid a little bit, but we have 2 of the NHL best goalies potential wise. In a couple years if they both turn out to be amazing we will have to trade one of them, and then other teams will have to overpay for them.

    • Black_Hawk

@bb33tmlnhl yup this will look really good if reimer gets hurt in the season

    • wiski

@bb33tmlnhl Our luck Scrivy ends up being the next Rask

      • Black_Hawk

wiski maybe but doesnt matter if bernier turns out really good too

  • Pent_House

Bernier will be a great addition. He’s such a unique goalie, and his puck handling ability will be a massive help to our defense and break-outs.

    • Black_Hawk

Pent_House Yeah i like the trade anyways

  • Pent_House

Bernier will be a great addition. He’s such a unique goalie, and his puck handling ability will be a massive help to our defense and break-outs.

  • Waiting4LSC

First clue was bye bye Burkie. Then the owners bring in Liedickie, and now this. I hope we aren’t returning to the Ballard /Peddie days where the smart minds are taped shut.

    • Maneet4

Waiting4LSC why because we brought in a goalie that is better than the one we shipped out and has more upside than the forward we gave up too?

      • Waiting4LSC

No. Overpayment when we need a #1 C and a # 2D. Fratts would have been a huge asset in any of those trade scenarios. Instead we go for a lesser position of need IMO.

        • Black_Hawk

          Waiting4LSC We dont know that

        • wiski

Waiting4LSC Something else is brewing if he dumped Fratts

        • Maneet4

Waiting4LSC You assume that he would be a huge asset in any of those trade scenarios. You assume that they will not be able to address those issues (#1 C and # 2D) now and you also assume that goalie position is a lesser position. Can never have enough goaltending unless you have an elite elite goalie which are rare in this NHL.

        • Knights2Leafs

          Maneet4 Waiting4LSC
Not speaking for W4LSC, but he didn’t call goaltending a lesser position.  He simply stated it is a lesser position of NEED.

    • Maneet4

Waiting4LSC why because we brought in a goalie that is better than the one we shipped out and has more upside than the forward we gave up too?

  • http://mapleleafshotstove.com/ Radar O’Rielly

So, do the leafs match the Flyers offer sheet?

    • Black_Hawk

Radar O’Rielly oh yeah i forgot about that

  • gilmourhalloffame

I don’t know the market for back up goalies but if its dry then scrivens would have been lost on waivers anyways with Bernier and Reimer here now. ends up being frattin and a 2nd in a shit draft year

  • thebigbokowski

I actually really like this trade. Scrivy was not going to be a number 1. Bernier and Riemer both have the ability to become franchise goaltenders. Who ever runs away with the job over the next couple season, go with them and trade the other. Sets us up very well for the future i believe.

    • Pent_House

thebigbokowski Definitely. I didn’t like Scrivens embellishment work once he got to the NHL any way.

    • Black_Hawk

thebigbokowski I think it will look great if Reimer gets hurt in the season

  • clark sittler

Im not saying Scrivens is an all star but i feel he had great potential( Rask) im hoping Bernier does not become Raycroft. Frattin is a risky player to move. Nonis better has some real intelligent moves this off season or he will be gone next year

    • Pent_House

clark sittler I dunno about Scrivens with all that potential. He moved around in net way too much, and he was a diver

    • Black_Hawk

clark sittler Frattin could be really good but he has knee injuries as well and may not be

      • Pent_House

Black_Hawk I think Frattin will be a 20 goal scorer for a long time. I’m not worried about his health. He’s a tough guy to lose but we have a lot of good wing prospects coming up, and someone was bound to be moved eventually.

    • Maneet4

clark sittler Bernier is better than Scrivens. Cannot even say Scrivens has great potential like Rask. Frattin is a good young player but you rather roll the dice with a top goalie prospect/potential than a forward who projects at best a 2nd liner.

The Raycroft analogy applies in this way: Who is better Reimer or Scrivens?

      • Black_Hawk

Maneet4 clark sittler Raycroft wasnt bad here. I mean he did win 37 games

  • 2 minutes

Not a huge fan of this right now. Reimer is finally able to handle the load, and we are going to bring in another goalie to battle it out with? I feel like Reimer could be a trade chip now. I feel it also sheds a little light in the Kipper deal last year and how the Leafs wanted him to sign into the future. Maybe they were thinking Kipper to back up and move scrivy for somebody better, then swapping the now valuable Reimer for something else?

    • Waiting4LSC

      Reimer to Edmonton???????

  • Dink

Boston press think Kings did ok, but Leafs really scored…got to trust Nonis on this one.

    • Black_Hawk

@Dink that is good if its bos saying that

      • Dink

Black_Hawk yup best to get other town views on things some time

  • astrit07

don’t forget lindback got traded to tb last year for two second round picks well bernier is way better than him so its a good deal I am sad to see frattin go but you have to give up something to get something so its a good deal

  • Dangle_My_Berries

    JESUS!!!

  • brokensilence

someday we’re going to look back on this trade and wonder why we ever traded matt frattin.

  • leafsince93

bummer to loose Frattin but i like the trade..wing position is easier to fill than quality goaltending . good healthy competition will not hurt Reimer, if he gets injured we have a guy who will run with the ball..i think exciting times ahead in Leafland

    • Black_Hawk

leafsince93 yeah i like it too

  • Black_Hawk

Gilbey93 thats probably the best position on it

    • Dangle_My_Berries

Black_Hawk Gilbey93 ya im not upset or happy…..just gotta wait and see what Bernier does in a Leafs jersey…we didnt give up too much

      • Black_Hawk

Dangle_My_Berries Black_Hawk Gilbey93 I like it personally now but we’ll have to see

  • Black_Hawk

Gilbey93 thats probably the best position on it

  • Leafs_17

did we really just do this? why

    • Black_Hawk

Leafs_17 guess nonis thinks we need another potential number one goalie

      • Leafs_17

Black_Hawk Leafs_17 ya we got one already in Reimer

        • Black_Hawk

Leafs_17 Black_Hawk two is better then one. we can always flip him later

  • http://stores.ebay.ca/UncleJakesCards?_rdc=1 unclejakescards

    ok , soooooo ……..
do the flip to oilers for the 7th overall now please …….lolol

    • Black_Hawk

      unclejakescards possibility

    • wiski

unclejakescards whos the back up then?

  • Jay_Berg

Why are people here talking like losing Frattin is devastating? He’s had a minimal impact on this team. He’s not exactly young either (25) and he’s failed to really break out on a consistent basis.

    • MikeGartner11

Jay_Berg I think the leafs are going to be active. This is the first piece of the puzzle. Frattin can be replaced and is not the young player a lot of people say he is.

  • Burtonboy

I DO NOT like this deal at all. I’ll give the pro scouts and management the benefit of doubt for now. Ultimately they are better qualified to evaluate talent then I am. I hope they are right but I ‘ll be screaming bloody murder if he walks in a yr or two  because he’s not the starter.

    • rustynail

Burtonboy shoert term it comes down to if they sign him before July 5. I could see Calgary with an offer sheet for 3.5 per on July 5 or shortly thereafter. Could end up getting a 2nd round pick only back or matching for nice high numbers. We give up 2 roster spots at 1.7 million total and get back 1 which could easily be significantly higher than that

      • Burtonboy

rustynail does he have arbitration rights this yr ?

      • Burtonboy

rustynail does he have arbitration rights this yr ?

    • newkb

Yeah….didn’t think that spending assets on a goalie was the most pressing need. But maybe this is the precursor to other moves that will shore up the obvious and glaring weaknesses. At least that is what I am telling myself as I sit in the corner rocking back and forth…

    • Knights2Leafs

      Burtonboy
Or if we get offer sheeted and have to sign him to a bigger contract than is needed or lose him.

    • Knights2Leafs

      Burtonboy
Or if we get offer sheeted and have to sign him to a bigger contract than is needed or lose him.

      • Burtonboy

Knights2Leafs Burtonboy How hard is it going tp be getting him signed ? He knows he’s in a battle with Reimer . Will he hold out and sign with say Calgary or somewhere else where he is pretty much guaranteed a starting position ?

        • Cameron19

Burtonboy Knights2Leafs Not likely.  He wanted to be close to home.

  • Dink

Guess the important thing is the 82 game season will return and could Reimer handle all that…

    • Pent_House

      @Dink exactly

  • Alex Tran

    Great move.
It’s gonna be exciting to have an above average goalie 82 games a year.

  • Alex Tran

    Great move.
It’s gonna be exciting to have an above average goalie 82 games a year.

    • Black_Hawk

Alex Tran yeah this is kinda exciting

    • wiski

Alex Tran Scrivy was fine in his replacement of Reims

      • Black_Hawk

wiski Alex Tran Scrivys for bernier is a good trade off

    • DWCMLHS

Alex Tran Ummm what? Bernier is above average? And I didn’t even like Scrivens much, but he put up above-average numbers this season.
Bernier will be better than Scrivens, but not enough to justify making this move when we already have a good starter in Reimer.

      • Pent_House

DWCMLHS It is when we become so much harder to fore-check against. This guy has great puck handling ability. He’s a stand-up goalie almost, and catches the puck. It’s going so much harder to dump and fore-check against us.

  • Alex Tran

    Great move.
It’s gonna be exciting to have an above average goalie 82 games a year.

  • Had Phaneuf of you

    I
asked a few other Leaf fans this question regarding Reimer, to try and see where Nonis may be coming from.
Did you find yourself HOPING and holding your breath
on shots at the net during games, and relieved when he did stop it? Or did you
EXPECT him to make the save? I love Reimer, but I want to be like a Bruins or Kings fan where I KNOW our goalie will stop it, and if it goes in, it’s cause something out of the ordinary happened.
And I guess Reimer’s health over the last couple years was likely an issue as far as relying on him long term.  They will make a great tandem I think, pushing each other HARD for the #1 spot. That’s a good thing.
Hopefully we sign him at a decent price. No more than 2.5mil, preferably 2mil. Yes, I know he’s had little playing time, but he’s a stud with franchise potential.

    • Cameron19

Had Phaneuf of you This is not about Reimer.

      • leafsince93

Gilbey93 Cameron19 Had Phaneuf of you agree with cameron, this trade is not about Reimer..this trade is about strengthening Leafs goaltending. i actually like this trade and see it as a healthy competition for Reimer and if either gets injured.u still hv potential starter to turn to.

      • gilmourhalloffame

Cameron19 Respectfully disagree. It’s all about Reimer. What GM trades for a potential number 1 goalie when they think they have a young number 1 goalie?

        • lukethenuke

          gilmourhalloffame Cameron19 this is true

        • Cameron19

gilmourhalloffame Cameron19 Context matters here.  There is no doubt in Reimer, who is vastly ahead of Bernier in terms of achievement in the league.  The doubt is in our back-up and overall depth at the position.  If there is anything about this related to Reimer, it is his health.  Trying to make it about him in any other way is just needlessly trying to create controversy.

      • gilmourhalloffame

Cameron19 Respectfully disagree. It’s all about Reimer. What GM trades for a potential number 1 goalie when they think they have a young number 1 goalie?

  • Bon Scott was a Leaf fan

Wow….I go out to puff a fatty and come back in to find we made a significant trade.  I gotta puff more weed.

    • wiski

Bon Scott was a Leaf fan Your gonna have a horse named after you as well 😉

  • Cameron19

    TheCanucksnaphook Stewart please.

    • Jay_Berg

Cameron19 TheCanucksnaphook why trade for Stewart when we can just sign Clarkson?

      • Cameron19

Jay_Berg Cameron19 TheCanucksnaphook Why not have both?

        Lupul / Kessel
        J.V.R. / Stewart
        Kulie / Clarkson
        D’Amigo / Orr

      • Cameron19

Jay_Berg Cameron19 TheCanucksnaphook Why not have both?

        Lupul / Kessel
        J.V.R. / Stewart
        Kulie / Clarkson
        D’Amigo / Orr

      • Jay_Berg

Cameron19 Jay_Berg TheCanucksnaphook because that would just screw us in the future. why pay Clarkson $4.5 to play on the 3rd line?

      • lukethenuke

Cameron19 Jay_Berg TheCanucksnaphook such slow wings ugh

      • Cameron19

lukethenuke Cameron19 Jay_Berg TheCanucksnaphook Kessel, JVR, Lupul, Kulie and D’Amigo are all very fast….what are you talking about?

      • Cameron19

        Jay_Berg Cameron19 TheCanucksnaphook Top 9 bottom 3 model.

      • lukethenuke

Cameron19 lukethenuke Jay_Berg TheCanucksnaphook Id say kessel, kule and damigo.
JVR is not fast, maybe for a big guy, but overall no way and lupul keeps up/  SLOW

      • Pent_House

lukethenuke Cameron19 Jay_Berg TheCanucksnaphook Are you kidding? Lupul is a war horse out there, he’s fast.

      • lukethenuke

Cameron19 lukethenuke Jay_Berg TheCanucksnaphook cant tell you about stewart but he seems the same as JVR when ive seen him play, if not a little slower

  • Tommy Cat

    Good trade by YesYes

  • Black_Hawk

The second isnt even this years so we still have another asset for another trade.

  • leafmealone

FUCK! And please tell me it’s so we can flip him to Edmonton for something better. That is all.

    • Black_Hawk

leafmealone i dont mind seeing him playing for us

    • leafmealone

Gilbey93 leafmealone Context. He’s not put up any better numbers than Scrivens all while playing against weaker competition and in behind a much better team. Plus, he’s going to cost a few million more than Scrivens. And that’s cap space I don’t think we needed to be allocating to our goaltending.

  • Dink

We all liked Frattin, but he hadn’t really produced. I wish him luck though …

    • Black_Hawk

      @Dink yeah good guy

  • gilmourhalloffame

hopefully Bernier is the Felix the Cat part II

    • Pent_House

gilmourhalloffame Playing style wise he’s a lot more similar to Brodeur. He’s great at handling the puck and almost plays a stand-up style. Real Hybrid goalie.

  • Cameron19

Bring on the buyout trades next, Dave!

Liles to the Islanders for DiPietro + _______ + 1st

Komi to the Lightning for Lecavalier + _______ + ________

Oh, and somewhat concerning is that now we must sign Bernier quickly, as teams like Philly will attempt to offersheet him for the measly price of a 2nd round pick.

    • Tommy Cat

Cameron19 Philly won’t mess with us.  They know we have a bank account.

      • Cameron19

Tommy Cat Cameron19 It’s not about money though, it’s about cap hits.

      • Black_Hawk

Tommy Cat Cameron19 yeah they know whats up

    • gilmourhalloffame

      Cameron19
No one will offer sheet the LEAFS. We have tons of cap space and we can retaliate with an offer of our own especially with our cap and cash.

      • Black_Hawk

        gilmourhalloffame Cameron19 exactly

      • Cameron19

gilmourhalloffame Cameron19 We actually don’t have tons of space. Retaliation is probably the biggest deterrent though, you’re right there.

      • Cameron19

Gotta love MLHS!!  We fucking RULE!!

  • Dangle_My_Berries

NoNo’s trades brings all the boys to the yard…

    • Black_Hawk

      Dangle_My_Berries lol haha

  • 2 minutes

    Sooo Reimer to TB ?

    • Black_Hawk

2 minutes we are not moving him

    • Cameron19

2 minutes lol, Then we wouldn’t have a starter.

    • Pent_House

2 minutes Tandem brother, Tandem. Think  40 games each.

      • 2 minutes

I can’t see it happening. I feel like Reimer played to well to end up playing less games and will feel shafted. How long can we go on saying he’s not ready for a full work load? Goaltending wasn’t our problem, and now it is a position of strength. That is why I feel like we will deal from it.

  • 2 minutes

    Sooo Reimer to TB ?

  • Alex Tran

Another thing to consider is that while the Reimer/Scrivens tandem was relatively successful this past season, a full 82 game schedule will make for a very different landscape in 2013-2014. I am a huge Reimer fan but he’s never started more than 35 games yet in an NHL season. Endurance will be a factor. Having a young goalie with star calibre upside to play 30-40 games per year, if not steal the job outright will be incredibly valuable.
There was always going to be a logjam on the wing and now you’ve managed to turn some good assets into single better asset.

    • Black_Hawk

Alex Tran Yeah i think everyone will see this as a good trade if reimer gets hurt in the season or falters

    • Maneet4

Alex Tran Exactly and look at the two best teams in the West this season: Hawks and Ducks who both used platoon situation.
