Trade Gardner to Colorado for the 1st (MacKinnon). Top line centres are almost impossible to get. Yes Gardner is proven and MacKinnnon worth is likely preception. Hopefully MacKinnon can make the jump and I think is worth the risk.
Gillis looking to trading Schneider now HAHAHAH
A bit surprised we haven't seen some trade action. Multiple ongoing discussions. Sense is the first deal may open the flood gates. Hope so
Can a team negotiate a new contract with a pending UFA on another team before a trade is executed? Was this an addition to the CBA? Could Toronto talk to Stastny in Colorado for example and execute a trade that would be contingent on him resigning in Toronto before he hit the market?
Good morning all.
So I had a question, or rather I need confirmation on something. I was talking hockey shop with a few friends and they suggested that the Leafs are in serious cap trouble going into next year and they won't be able to resign Phaneuf. I crunched some numbers and to me we are well below the cap now and would be under by about 8 million if we resigned our RFAs and did not make another trade. Then looking to next year, combining a buyouts, salary retention, Liles contract all expiring and the likelyhood that the cap increases, we would be in even better shape next season. Is there something wrong with my logic and or math here?
From the Toronto Sun; The Leafs received some good news on Friday about three draft picks from 2012. Defencemen Morgan Rielly (fifth overall), Matt Finn (35th) and forward Ryan Rupert (157th) have been invited to the Canadian junior camp this summer.
I'm not surprised at Rielly, or Finn, but Rupert is a pleasant surprise to me.
If the cap issues can be addressed the obvious choice and highest probability of a deal is likely for Stastny in terms of age and playmaking ability as a centre. Last year when all the Luongo crap was flying I made a case that Bernier would be a good acquisition...
Will anyone pay Bozak 5+ mill to do what he does? Motherfucker needs to take a page out of Kunitz's book and realize his stats are bolstered by those around him.
Malone is on the market why not go for him? cheaper then Clarkson and signed for only 2 more years so we wont have to deal with those extra years when everyone will be crying that Clarkson is so over paid
and to clarify, this is not a "we should trade for Stastny" post persay, I am just looking for clarification on the rules of the CBA
@maximus_asinus we are in as good a shape as anyone, depending what is spent from this point forward..still have the 2 buyouts also
@maximus_asinus You are correct. The cap will rise, and the Leafs have a pile of expiring contracts after this season.
@mcloki Morning, mc. Draft Day could be fun.
We cannot have two overpaid centres in Grabo and Bozak, regardless of the fact that Kadri is looking for a big chunk as well. Neither will live up to the expectations attached to the price tag they command. I would be okay with a two year term for Bozak if we have no other options, this should give enough time to figure out if Kadri could indeed hang with the big boys of the league consistently throughout 82+ games.
The C position is our weakest both in current roster and prospects
With Gunnarsson, Gardiner, Liles and Fraser on the left side already, where do you plan on playing Ference?
Answer is a team needs Colorado's permission to talk contract extension and everyone else is on a new thread. See ya there.
@.JVR. right side?
i think Liles is dealt, and fraser will be the 7th guy imo
ference-blacker or granberf
Oh, play Ference on the right side?
Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Ference
Fraser - Franson
What about the right side?
Yes he could, but that would really deplete our forward corps.
Remember, we've already lost Komarov and Frattin, while Bozak and MacArthur are UFAs.
Along with Gardiner, Kulemin could also be considered a trade chip. Pair up Kulemin/Percy or Blacker/21st pick, I think Pittsburgh would be interested in that. Neal-Malkin-Kulemin would be scary.
The only problem is Pittsburgh probably wants Gardiner in return (along with a prospect and a 1st) so you can take him out of that mock lineup.
@.JVR. Man that looks nice.
I suppose you could do that, but I'd rather find a defenceman to play with Phaneuf.
Letang would be perfect, but the price Pittsburgh will want for him will be far too high and his contact demands are the same.
Would definitely round out the defence nicely though:
Phaneuf - Letang
Gardiner - Franson
Gunnarsson - Blacker/Holzer/Granberg
If you're gonna put Colborne and Ashton on the fourth line, you might as well leave them in the AHL, where they'd get top line minutes with the Marlies.
@DWCMLHS Good players tend to find ways to work with each other. I think Grabo and Phil are good players and can probably learn to work together.
I know what I see of Grabo this year and before.
Grabo has had a tendency to hold the puck too long before this season...its not new.
Phil should get the puck on the fly IMO//less turnovers.
Need a guy with vision to find Kessel (see Kadri)
My opinion is they are a poor match..your opinion reads like fact.
@Savo43 Grabovski is good defensively. Much better than Bozak. That's why Carlyle made him the shut-down C. Although he shouldn't have been, because his offensive ability is very good too, and playing a purely defensive role negated it.
@DWCMLHS Agreed, the brief periods have provided offense no doubt, i remember specifically the moments saying to myself "damn, why don't they play together! 20 seconds on the ice together and they score".
A: No he doesn't. He carried the puck more this season because he had to play with McClement and Komarov so much. MacArthur was the primary puck-rusher and playmaker on the MGK line, not Grabo.
B: Phil doesn't need a playmaking center, anyways. Since he's the one rushing the puck and entering the O-zone with possession most of the time, he sets up most of the plays. He'd be the playmaker on a JVR-Grabo-Kessel line and still score 30+ goals, simply because he's THAT good.
@whalz That comment about Grabo with Kessel, that is very untrue. I've seen them generate some solid offense together n the past. Its never even been given a shot outside of line changes resulting with them accidentally being on the ice and scoring. That side, defensively i think it could be a bad situation so it doesn't get done.
@mcloki yeah i think he's just gonna sign a 1 year deal unfortunately, nless its mtl or something.
@whalz That's just a giant assumption on your part. They've never been together long enough to have a chance at developing chemistry. And in the brief periods of time they have been together, they have been great. So have Kessel and Kadri, though. Pretty much any actual top-6 center works with Phil, I bet.
