Bob McKenzie polled a bunch of NHL scouts about the top prospects of the draft class and tweeted the results. The following couple of tweets piqued my interest, as they mentioned a few prospects who are likely to figure into the Leafs range:
Best agitator: Plymouth’s Ryan Hartman with clear win but guy he fought in Prospects Game Kerby Rychel got a couple of votes.
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) June 28, 2013
Best pure goal-scorer: Anthony Mantha with the win over Drouin, MacKinnon, Shinkaruk. Mantha scored 50 this season.

It seems likely, given his upside, there will be a team that likes Anthony Mantha enough to take him before 21. There is a shot he’ll be there when the Leafs draft (if they stay at 21). He’s not a center, but the Leafs could really use the infusion of a high-ceiling scoring talent into the system, be it a center or winger. In the same vein, LW Kerby Rychel plays a bit of a power forward’s game and owns a big shot. He should be on the board at 21 and has back-to-back 40 goal seasons to his name, keeping concerns about his skating and preferential treatment in Windsor in mind. Valentin Zykov is another pure scoring winger (40 in 67 games in the Q this season) with decent size and better wheels than Rychel. All of these options, all 40+ goal scorers this past season, involve a gamble, but the Leafs seem well stocked with depth forwards in the pipeline and the only way they can score big in the late 1st is by taking a chance. You can throw Morgan Klimchuk’s name into the mix, too. This all barring a trade up, of course…
I do like big centermen, but – granted, based mostly on his numbers – I’m not ecstatic about Fred Gauthier’s upside and think the pick would err on the safe side. It could be true that Morrison and his team prefer to lean on the surer bets later on in the first, based on their picks of Percy and Biggs in 2011. We’ll have to see how it plays out.

Teams are piling up with interest in Lecavalier
If the rumours are true about Vinny preferring to stay south (and avoid Canada and its taxes), SJ could be the spot. The Leafs are in a position to pretty much hand him the 1C role though (next to some fine wing talent to boot), which wouldn’t be the case with the Sharks.
Letang to Toronto? Don’t hold your breath
Sage advice. Definitely feels like the Toronto stuff was the product of an agent looking to put the heat on Shero.
What was your favourite Maple Leaf Draft Day?
From Michael at VLM.
Three 2012 Leafs picks invited To Team Canada’s Summer Camp.
Morgan Rielly, Matt Finn and Ryan Rupert.
Dave Nonis’ uneventful media availability from yesterday afternoon
Nice chandelier though.
6'5" centre's don't grow on trees and right now he looks better than Colborne did two years ago. Gauthier all the way. (And it's not like stiff-ass can't skate Dave Steckel)
We won't know about Lecavalier's decision for a few days. This is going to be dragged out in a very painful way.
Interesting how Boston radio call in shows think Chiarelli should blow up the Bruins to get Colorados 1st pick, hearing insane deals like Seguin, Krug, Peverly, rights to Horton & Ference plus 2015 #1 pick for Statsny and Colorados #1 this year...mind you this is just rumors on radio....
The Bear ain't happy in Beantown
Morning everyone! Looking forward to today all week and cant wait till the ball starts rolling. I predict Edmonton and Colorado make a splash, not necessarily with each other, but they will do something.
Hoping Leafs do something monumental!
GO LEAFS GO!!!
Good Morning everyone... Gardiner + Kulemin for Letang and and a D prospect... Pittsburgh is apparently deep in young defencemen... This thins us out up front even more, but Kulemin could be replaced... Or we get a young winger back... We get an elite offensive defenceman to counter Ottawa's Karlsson... Today could be wild...
Morning to all my Canadian buddies across the pond and to the fellow Europeans. Let's get this draft party started woooooooooo, just shy of 9 hours to go. Bring it on
Happy Draft Day everyone! Here's hoping Nonis drops a huge bomb on us this morning.
I am at Pearson airport waiting for a flight. I was hoping that I could purchase the Hockey News Draft Special or something like that - the had Tyler Seguin as the coverboy on their latest issue. I passed.
TSN: "How deep is the Panthers' hole? The worst team in the league last season is offering season tickets for US$7 a game, complete with a free jersey and parking"
Good luck with that Seth Jones...
I can see Toronto trading guards if we are getting letang...to much the same thing and I think letang is a upgrade on atleast 1 year of a bargain contract and guards could get a huge return to the right suiter
I only learned of the website "The Fourth Period" recently... They're claiming that Jake Gardiner could be a player Nonis trades to fill holes... I'd hate to see him go... Wonder if that "Free Jake Gardiner" was ill-advised....
I saw some of the discussion regarding Clutterbuck on the boards today, so I did some crunching of the numbers to come up with his average season based on the last 4 years (3 full plus the lockout shortened season). Here is how it turned out:
74GP 14-11-25 73PIM 15:13TOI 1:30SHTOI 305HITS 40.6%OZONE START
Looks like a good, defensive minded third-line winger to me. The 305 hits would rank right near the top of the league for a forward. In fact, he did lead the league in that regard 2 of the 4 years that I looked at. Additionally, the 40.6% of starts in the offensive zone falls in line with other forwards who play in a shutdown role.
I was a big fan of Komarov's play this past season, and hated to see him go. However, if as rumoured, we are able to make a play for Clutterbuck, it looks as though it would be a slight to moderate upgrade. He's also quite a bit bigger than Komarov (1 inch taller, but 25 pounds heavier).
I think if we were able to trade for Clutterbuck, and then further add a winger for the top six to bump Kulemin down a spot, we might have ourselves a pretty good shutdown line in Clutterbuck-McClement-Kulemin. We all know how Carlyle values such a line. What do you guys think?
@LeafsForLife We need to go away with a 1C to play with Kessel and JVR in the next 7 days
@Armchair GM I wouldn't be happy. Love Kule too much

@King of the Kessel I've always been a huge fan of Clutterbuck, I think he'd do great on this team, GO GET HIM NONO!
@Shift_Disturber1 Wow, what a rant indeed.
"Don Quinlan is a retired history teacher from the Toronto District School Board. He has authored or co-authored over thirty books for students in secondary and elementary schools. He currently works on a series of projects for the CBC. Like so many Canadians, he admires the life of Tim Horton, enjoys visiting Tim Hortons, and is patiently awaiting the return of the Stanley Cup to Toronto"
He works for CBC...
