Founded in 2008, Maple Leafs Hotstove (MLHS) has grown to be the most visited unofficial team-focused hockey website online (Quantcast).Independently owned and operated, MLHS provides thorough and wide ranging content, varying from news, opinion and analysis, to pre-game and long-form game reviews, a weekly feature piece, the "Leafs Notebook", along with a Web TV show the "Maple Leaf Hangout".
  • ProfessorRance

Whether he should of said it or not is not the question. You could tell that Grabovski was frustrated. it’s got to be a bad feeling to get a compliance buyout whether you have a bad contract or not. A team is basically saying signing you was a mistake and that would irk many professionals. I’m glad he wait to say this after the fact, than during the year right before the playoffs or during the playoffs in which would have caused a media frenzy.

    • WendelGilmour

ProfessorRance No sympathy for him. He took full advantage of the situation and took the Leafs for all he possibly could with his contract.

      • ShotgunCharlie

Remember…that grabo contract is no different then what we look to be doing today. Grabo was on the verge of being a ufa and was overpaid. Same will happen if we sign weiss or clarkson.

        • DAOLGY

ShotgunCharlie bang on with that comment. Hope Nonis has something up his sleeve to placate the nervous  nellies on this site of which I am one.

        • Loric76

DAOLGY ShotgunCharlie there’s one difference – the 1C Nonis brings in will play on the top line with Kessel.  This isn’t a knock on Grabo, but for whatever reason these two just couldn’t play together.

  • Aki Berg

    Love it.

  • DWCMLHS

<3 Grabovski. Favorite player, no questions asked. Some team is going to sign him under $5 million and have an absolute bargain.

    • Knights2Leafs

      DWCMLHS
You mean sign for his proper FMV instead of the overpayment by $1m – $1.5M Burke gave him?

      • DWCMLHS

$5.5 million was absolutely fine for a guy that can put up points in the top-30 by centers from only a 2C and 2PP role, while being good defensively and a possession-driving monster.

  • Kouba

When the circus starts, so I can set my clocks? 12:00 ET?

    • LeafsForLife

      Kouba yes!

      • Great Dane

LeafsForLife Kouba Still 6 hours to kill

        • Burtonboy

Great Dane LeafsForLife Kouba Is it safe to come around here yet ? Holy crap people were emotional yesterday

        • Loric76

Burtonboy Great Dane LeafsForLife Kouba NO!  GTFO!  Our Lives are over! /cry

        • Burtonboy

Loric76 Burtonboy Great Dane LeafsForLife Kouba LOL figured that

        • Great Dane

Burtonboy  LeafsForLife Kouba  should be – they were going on all night. LOL
To be honest Grabos contract was bad, now it is corrected but signing Bozak at all or Weiss/clarkson over 5 million would just be another mistake.

        • Burtonboy

Great Dane Burtonboy LeafsForLife Kouba Well you won’t get Weiss or Clarkson for less then 5 . As for Bozak the balls in his court I would imagine . I’m guessing Nonis offered 4.5 x 5 and even that is generous.

        • Burtonboy

Yaknowwhat Burtonboy The cap forces a GM into making decisions a lot of people aren’t gonna like

        • Great Dane

Yaknowwhat Burtonboy Burke did a lot of good things for the Leafs. However, at two things he failed completely:
          signing UFA’s and resigning players

        • Great Dane

Burtonboy Great Dane LeafsForLife Kouba  Maybe not. Then it is better to stay away. Don’t you agree

        • Loric76

Burtonboy Great Dane LeafsForLife Kouba I’m OK with big money or long term, but not both.  Lets hope with the cap stranglehold the market isn’t what it used to be and no teams are offering that amount for the likes of Bozak, Weiss, Clarkson, etc.

        • Burtonboy

Great Dane Burtonboy LeafsForLife Kouba I would overpay some but not much.. If you want any player in FA you’re going to have too.

        • Great Dane

Burtonboy  LeafsForLife Kouba Doesn’t matter 250-500K  but 6 or 6.5 no way.

        • Uncle Otis

          Burtonboy
          Hahaha
From our fearless leader on down!

        • ShotgunCharlie

Thats my concern. I hate to see Grabo go. I know he was overpaid but replacing him for another overpaid centerman is something I hope doesnt happen

        • ShotgunCharlie

I think the only goos ufa choice he made was mclemment

        • ShotgunCharlie

          Er good

        • Bernier_The_Boats

Great Dane Yaknowwhat Burtonboy I disagree…when UFA opens up and the best available center is Tim Connoly and you sign him over a short term to help improve the team, you did your best.

  • Jeff_Mintz

Going to miss Grabo.  Too bad he had such a hefty contract.  Im sure he will land on his feet

  • Great Dane

Grabo is just another example of a contract that was overpaid.
May on Sportsnet nailed it: Bad contract – good player.
I do hope that Nonis is going to do the right thing. Weiss or Clarkson over 5 million are just going to be bad contracts then better stay away.

    • Loric76

Great Dane Bad contract, good player, bad fit.  They clearly didn’t see him as top line capable, Kadri’s better/cheaper/the future for the secondary scoring line, and Bolland is now the shutdown line guy.  Square peg, round hole.  Simple as that.  Everyone I’m sure will miss him and wish him the bets of luck, but if they couldn’t trade him this was very likely the best move available.

      • Great Dane

Loric76 that is pretty much it. Just facts and no reason to be sooooo emotional.
A lot of usually calm bloggers went off like teenage girls.

        • Loric76

Great Dane Loric76 LOL you mean they aren’t teenage girls?  fuck why am I here then lol

        • Great Dane

          Loric76 haha – you have a point

  • MaxwellHowe

Clarkson will be signed and overpaid.  Weiss as well.  Then Ference.  The Leafs will be a very different team next year.  I just hope the young guys will be given a chance and won’t be Carlyled like Gardiner last year

    • ShotgunCharlie

Thats why Gardiner is trade bait. He better bring in someone not named stastny

  • Great Dane

Yaknowwhat I would do Clarkson and Weiss at that price if I couldn’t swing a deal for Stastny

  • Loric76

Yaknowwhat but those numbers make sense…but 6-6.5 for Clarkson, 5.5 for Weiss, 4.5-5 for Bozak, fuck that.

    • Great Dane

Loric76 Yaknowwhat  yep and then still get an upgrade on defense.

    • Loric76

Yaknowwhat Loric76 I guess we’ll see what happens in a few hours.  My guess is Nonis either has a couple contracts lined up already ready to finalise, or is taking a gamble that after the UFA’s are signed that some better, younger RFA players will shake loose through arbitration later this summer.

    do we care?

  • Burtonboy

Yaknowwhat You likely won’t get any of those players at those rates.

  • http://stores.ebay.ca/UncleJakesCards?_rdc=1 unclejakescards

    happy frenzy day !!??????????

    • ShotgunCharlie

I hope you were good this year or you may wind up getting Stephen Weiss in your stocking

      • http://stores.ebay.ca/UncleJakesCards?_rdc=1 unclejakescards

ShotgunCharlie no, dont want weiss …….

  • ShotgunCharlie

Well for anyone hoping we trade for stastny…or a 1C, expect to say goodbye to Gardiner and possibly next years first rounder.

    • Knights2Leafs

      ShotgunCharlie
Why are you trying to stir shit up. No one and I mean not even JFJ would trade Gardiner alone for Stastny much less throw in a first round pick. Please just stop this nonsense now.
Let’s just let the day unfold and see what happens.

      • ShotgunCharlie

Did you read my post? I said “or a 1C”. Please tell me where you get a 1C without giving a first and a good player

        • newkb

ShotgunCharlie So the last place team’s third line centre on an overpaid contract with one year left before UFA is worth our best young player and a first?  Sorry, but that is about as retarded a post as I have seen.  You are absolutely clueless when it comes to value.

      • newkb

Knights2Leafs ShotgunCharlie hes a facking tard.

    • LeafsForLife

ShotgunCharlie Stastny is NOT being traded to anywhere. His dad is buddys with Sakic. Its not happening!

  • Kinger4

Sad to see Grabo go, one of if not the hardest working Leaf the past few seasons or so, with that said  I wouldn’t give Clarkson more then 4.5 to be honest. Forget Weiss. I’d go after Stastny

    • Kinger4

ShotgunCharlie The Leafs could most def get Stastny for less then Gardiner and a 1st.  Stastny is way over paid to play on their 3rd line, because imo O’reilly, and Duchene are ahead of him on the team now.

      • Kinger4

ShotgunCharlie He’d instantly be our #1C, as I still think he is on most teams, but it just seems the Avs and him aren’t clicking anymore pretty much, and every off season or trade deadline his name is always out there.

      • ShotgunCharlie

And if he is a coveted #1 center…they are hard to get. We will pay for him with gardiner. At that…maybe o’reilly is the target? They were forced into his contract. With mackinnon there they really do need to one of their centers.

      • MaxwellHowe

ShotgunCharlie I agree, I think O’Reilly is the odd man out.  Either way, there will be no bargains for Stasney.  There will in fact be a bidding war, and the Leafs only get him for Gardiner, and maybe more

      • Loric76

        MaxwellHowe ShotgunCharlie thanks Dr. Seuse

      • Burtonboy

MaxwellHowe ShotgunCharlie If he is it will be next Feb. before they can move him

      • MaxwellHowe

Burtonboy MaxwellHowe ShotgunCharlie Sure, they’ll wait IMO.  One of Stasney or O’Reilly will go  – both will be free agents next summer, and the Avs aren’t paying them $6 million each.  And people thinking the Leafs will get Stasney for a song forget there are 28 other teams besides the Leafs.
The Avs are gonna clean up with that trade.  I would expect them to be contending for a cup within 3 years

      • Burtonboy

MaxwellHowe Burtonboy ShotgunCharlie There has been talk of Stastney coming to TO for years. Hasn’t happened yet and I don’t expect it will.

    • LeafsForLife

Kinger4Stastny is NOT being traded to anywhere. His dad is buddys with Sakic. Its not happening!

      • MaxwellHowe

LeafsForLife Kinger4 There is always the possibility Stasney will want out.  He will soon be the entrenched #3 centre there  – that’s something he might want to avoid.  Being Grabovskied

  • Uncle Otis

I counted 12 beeps for an avr of 1 every 3 seconds.
That’s a lot of fackin’ fackety facks
    #idiot coach

  • Uncle Otis

With the unpopular Grabo buyout,Tim L’s determination to get “star” names, and even lowly Berger’s cryptic tweets,my gut tells me we are in the running to get more than a Stastny over the next 48 hours.
ROR or Duchene is my guess…and it wont come cheap.
The resulting hand wringing should be interesting.

    • ShotgunCharlie

      I think you are right

    • MaxwellHowe

Uncle Otis Duchene is a long shot, but Holy Fack the Leafs first line would pure speed.  Opposing defence would stay back at the red line

      • Uncle Otis

        MaxwellHowe
Yes,that’s why I put ROR in front of him.
Either is plausible as the Avs are overloaded at C/need D
Gardiner would HAVE to be going the other way,and like Grabo, we know the coach isn’t too attached to Jake either

        • MaxwellHowe

Uncle Otis MaxwellHowe Yeah, I agree, Gardiner is the only trading chip that lands one of the Avs centres

        • Uncle Otis

          MaxwellHowe
Oh I can think of one other, but it’s heresy to post it 😉
          #banhammer

        • Loric76

Uncle Otis MaxwellHowe and #tradegardiner isn’t heresy?

        • Uncle Otis

          Loric76
Unlike popular thought around here, there isn’t one player I’m THAT attached to that isn’t tradable.
The Wendel/Dougie era hardened my heart.

        • Loric76

Uncle Otis Loric76 as long as the trade makes sense and it’s youth for youth I’m in agreement.

        • ShotgunCharlie

          Here here!

        • theacs1966

Loric76 Uncle Otis MaxwellHowe It is an area of strength for us.  I don’t want to see Jake traded, I think he can be like Karlsson, but if we trade him for a good, really good Centre, then I’m OK with it.

    • bermudaboy

Uncle Otis ROR can’t be dealt before Feb 2014

      • Uncle Otis

        bermudaboy
One year after the signing..me thinks u are right
Well, that leaves one on the theory

      • Bernier_The_Boats

        bermudaboy Uncle Otis why
        ?

        • Uncle Otis

          Bernier_The_Boats
The rule that doesn’t allow a team to trade away a player after a matched offer sheet(Calgary) for one year from the date signed

        • Bernier_The_Boats

          Uncle Otis Bernier_The_Boats I see

  • ShotgunCharlie

Did anyone look at Clarksons numbers? One 30 goal season. He is like Kulemin 2.0 Dregar must have it wrong with his 6.5 million comment.

    • Loric76

ShotgunCharlie ya but he’s a local boy and he crashes and bangs.  Apparently that’s worth 3m alone.

      • Knights2Leafs

        Loric76
lol – Chicago was trying to sell Bickell on the idea that he would see more endorsement $$ if he re-upped with them.  We should have Clarkson sign for $3M and convince him he can make another $4M in ensdorsements as the local boy done good crash and banger.

        • MaxwellHowe

Knights2Leafs Loric76 I’ve often wondered if the endorsement dollars for Canadian players, particularly Leaf players, makes up for the higher tax rates.  Someone should do a study – as you say, GMs in Canada must push this point in negotiations

        • Loric76

Knights2Leafs Loric76 he could be in the next Cheetah commercial lol

        • Uncle Otis

          Knights2Leafs
Id like to see the Leafs pull some sneaky cap circumvention with sponsors
You know…free board ads/ice/ tv whatever for big $$$ sponsorship deals for said players.
          Oh,and FACK U BETTMAN!!!

        • Loric76

Uncle Otis Knights2Leafs Holmgren would bitch and get us penalised, and then change it a bit and do it himself.

        • MaxwellHowe

Uncle Otis Knights2Leafs Great idea, but the NHL has a department specifically in charge of ensuring the Leafs can’t benefit from their huge fan base or wealth.  All about parity.  Teams in Miami with a fan base of several dozen people has to be able to compete on a level playing field because …oh fuck, what  a pile of shit the NHL has become

        • Uncle Otis

          MaxwellHowe
Unless they had forensic accountants scouring the books…how would they know?
Fack the NHL and Fack Bettman
The only reason Bettman “opened up the game” several years ago is because he believed he’d finally created a level playing field for all teams to compete with the Cap…and lowly teams didn’t need to play trapping/hooking hockey to negate richer teams star/skill power.
Worked so-so..and notice how we are slowly devoving back to “garage league ” hockey?
          No coincidence IMO

      • ShotgunCharlie

This is going to be a disaster. Clarkson is doomed from the start if he gets over 5 million. I am going off the board here and saying Nonis stays away from this guy. I cant see him going from one bad contract to another

        • Bernier_The_Boats

ShotgunCharlie Just like the Connolly signing, if Clarkson is signed for a short term and is paid a slightly inflated contract, I am ok with it.

        • Bernier_The_Boats

ShotgunCharlie I would even be happier if Nonis stopped retaining salary.  Then these UFA contracts would be easier to swallow.

    • MaxwellHowe

ShotgunCharlie Clarkson has a certain on ice presence that Kulimen lacks.  That’s not to suggest he should make the crazy money he will soon be making though

      • ShotgunCharlie

Yes but does he have the utility that kulemin has?

        • MaxwellHowe

ShotgunCharlie No, I agree, Kulimen is more important to the Leafs than most realize.  So he’ll be gone soon.

        • Bernier_The_Boats

MaxwellHowe ShotgunCharlie I sure hope Kuli can regain his scoring touch…He was about as well rounded as you can be when he was finding the back to the net.

  • Knights2Leafs

Yesterday I threw out the following stats for some context before we sign
    Clarkson:
    Last
    3 years:
    Clarkson – 210 games, 57 g, 31 a, ppg average of .42
    MacArthur – 195 games, 49 g, 76 a,ppg average of .64
    Stalberg – 203 games, 43 g, 47 a, ppg average of .44
    Bickell – 197 games, 35 g, 49 a, ppg average of .43
    Malone – 146 games, 40 g, 54 a, ppg average of .64
If you go back to the summer of 2010 we gave Armstrong 9M over 3 years.
At the time he was 2 years younger than Clarkson is now and closer to his prime
    years.
    Armstrong – 179 games, 41 g, 39 a, ppg average of .45 for the previous 3 years
    Clarkson – 210 games, 57 g, 31 a, ppg average of .42
Yes Clarkson is a goal scorer but he’s averaged 22 goals per year over the last 3 years but only 10 assists.  We just cut Grabo loose after he averaged 22 goals and 23 assists over his last 3 years.
Please do not overpay Mr. Nonis

    • ShotgunCharlie

      do kulemins!

      • ShotgunCharlie

Kulemin 175 pts in 351 games. .50 pts per game

  • peterbleafs

This 3 day period actually works to the teams advantage, they get to have second thoughts about UFAs….some sober up time.  Maybe Clarkson isnt what we need.

  • ShotgunCharlie

My take. This Leiweke guy came in and wants big change. I think we will see a big overhaul not just some added pieces. Overpaying in UFA really isnt the answer. I see bobby holik written all over a Clarkson signing. Besides..there is only room for one Clarky in blue and white

    • Loric76

ShotgunCharlie think we might see a Mike Richards kinda deal today?

      • ShotgunCharlie

I really think it is possible. Dumping one bad contract for another seems like a sideways move. It makes no sense at all.

        • Loric76

ShotgunCharlie fingers crossed for JT.  Wang and Snow are easily as crazy as Holmgren so it could happen lol

  • Dink

It’s Show Time !! (if I can handle all day with Duthie)

  • http://stores.ebay.ca/UncleJakesCards?_rdc=1 unclejakescards

5 mil for clarkson is fine . cap going up next year and maybe waaay up year after . he does bring more than just the stats say  . plus , with him , theres really no need for mclaren …..

    • Bernier_The_Boats

unclejakescards What I am really hoping si that all teams feel the crunch from the cap dropping and the highest bidder will end up getting a reasonable contract aquisition.  (There is always one GM that does something retarded.  : Holmgren)

      • http://stores.ebay.ca/UncleJakesCards?_rdc=1 unclejakescards

Bernier_The_Boats unclejakescards i see this years holmgren being mactavish …

        • Bernier_The_Boats

unclejakescards Bernier_The_Boats I dunno…he is a washed up bum, but I can’t believe he actually got something for Horcoff from Dallas rather than buying Horcoff out.  That was a good move.

Remember, mistakes have been made in free agency, unlike other methods of player acquisition, so teams are best to not sign anyone, ever.

wow a TSN guy making sense

  • Dink

Although I think Boston won the trade, I admire Dallas for everything they are doing down there.

    • MaxwellHowe

@Dink But Horcoff?  Eric Cole?  Yuck

      • peterbleafs

MaxwellHowe Detroit formula in play.  they will ride these old farts until their development pipeline kicks in.  And these guys take all the heat while guys like Seguin, Benn etc mature.

    • Kouba

@Dink I think they are just trying luck with what is available, there is no concept to be seen imo

I have a feeling that if/when Leafs sign some player or players, then they will be doing some trades…

theacs1966 Kouba Yaknowwhat ShotgunCharlie Good for him. No doubt I wish him the best in his civil life, but I think he helped a lot with driving the league into lockouts with  the overpaying.

    • theacs1966

      Kouba theacs1966 Yaknowwhat ShotgunCharlie Yep

  • Dink

Hoping to see Clarkson, Scuderi and Ference all signed for around 12 million, leaves plenty of cash to fart around with…

    • Joe_17

@Dink I’m so nervous that Clarkson becomes Armstrong 2.0 but more expensive

      • Dink

Joe_17 I have seen him and I got to believe ol’ Don Cherry on this one…but I would love to see the defense fixed first..

  • theacs1966

Where does Michael Ryder end up?  I fear he could be a Leaf today, or someone like him.  Clarkson will go to the Rangers because they always get the player we want, Richards, Nash for example.

    • Bernier_The_Boats

      theacs1966 Phuck that…we don’t want him…

      • theacs1966

Bernier_The_Boats theacs1966 Neither do I  just one of my fears for today./

        • Bernier_The_Boats

theacs1966 Bernier_The_Boats Today will be a good day…Clarkson and Stasny on trade.

        • theacs1966

Bernier_The_Boats theacs1966 I hate the Stansy idea.  Duchene yes.

        • Bernier_The_Boats

theacs1966 Bernier_The_Boats I think Stasny just needs a change of scenery and Colorado to retain a million of his salary.  Is that too much to ask…lol

        • theacs1966

Bernier_The_Boats theacs1966 If he had been bought out, maybe, but giving up assets and his salary for diminishing returns, no thanks.

        • Bernier_The_Boats

          theacs1966 Bernier_The_Boats Agreed…

        • theacs1966

Bernier_The_Boats theacs1966 I will accept a big minute munching Dman though.  No Weiss either.

  • ShotgunCharlie

Heh. Numbers aside. Imagine we see phaneuf and gardiner gone. Duchesne and clarkson in and then we sign ference. Reilly earns a spot out of training camp…

    • Bernier_The_Boats

ShotgunCharlie I’m concerned that if we make too many changes, we will screw the chemistry.  Last year we could see the makings of a good core.  Less is better IMO.

      • Dink

Bernier_The_Boats ShotgunCharlie The core has already been changed, so no looking back now…

        • ShotgunCharlie

I agree. Macarthur, bozak, grabo, komarov all gone already.

        • Bernier_The_Boats

          @Dink Bernier_The_Boats ShotgunCharlie I don’t think we need much more than Clarkson and a #2 d looking forward…

        • Dink

Bernier_The_Boats ShotgunCharlie sign Ference and Scuderi then stare at Edmonton severely with the defensemen we could offer…

        • Bernier_The_Boats

@Dink Bernier_The_Boats ShotgunCharlie haha…I’d take Scuderi, but Ference is on the downslide methinks…

      ShotgunCharlie Just stop….

  • Uncle Otis

    Yaknowwhat
I agree with you completely, but there is a threshold.
I’m unsure he is going to fit under it…and I love Clarkson.

    • Uncle Otis

      Yaknowwhat
Yep,that pretty much sums it up.
If he’s of true character,he’ll take less to be a Leaf
25 million vs 30 million…when it gets to the stupid stage in money,I don’t understand the difference, unless you are Mike Tyson
      Your still fackin’ filthy rich

  • Dink

Nonis is undoing all Burkes work

    • GeorgeCastanza

      @Dink slight exaggeration.

  • Great Dane

Grabo gone so we are – thin – at center.
After yesterday I am not sure that this forum can take another chock, but here we go:
My view has been for some time that Nonis and Leiweke have reevaluated the enitre roster and Phaneuf is not part of the future.
Yesterday just confirmed that Nonis is cleaning deck. So if a big trade is in the making this could be something the Leafs are looking at:
Phaneuf and Liles to Avs for Johnson and Stastny.   Or
Phaneuf, Liles, Percy and 1st round for Johnson and Duchene.

Leafs nation will probably get another chock in the next 48 hours.

    • newkb

      Great Dane Horrible

  • The_Irv

Okayyyyy just for fun. Don’t kill me.
Kessel for Duchene trade. Bozak signs in Colorado to be with his buddy.
JML (salary) + Percy + 1st for Bobby Ryan.
    J.V.R / Duchene / B. Ryan
    Lupul / Kadri / Clarkson
    Kulemin / Bolland / Colborne
    D’Amigo / McC / Orr
    Phaneuf / Scuderi
    Gardiner / Gunnar
    Franson / Fraser
    Reimer / Bernier
Just for fun and probably doesn’t fit under the cap but I know Cameron had mentioned last night whether or not the line up is easier to fill out with duchene in the middle and it seems it is…. I think Kessel is probably more talented but I think it’s easier to find elite wingers for your line up then it is centres… Would be a fast and fairly you team! Anyways done dreaming! Enjoy the day!

    • theacs1966

The_Irv I won’t kill you, but I might put a curse on your pee pee.  I like the idea of trading for Ryan, don’t know what it will take but I like it.

      • Dink

        theacs1966 The_Irv hahahaha

  • Dink

Sure was a lot of goings on yesterday for a holiday

  • Great Dane

Yaknowwhat I agree on your analysis.
LW and RW we are pretty set on the top lines.
Center 2-4 is also covered now.
Tending is fine with Reimer and Bernier, however I would not be surprise if Reimer is going to be included in a trade.
Defense with PMD we are set – Gardiner, Franson and Rielly will take at that in the future.
But I do not believe that Phaneuf is part of the plan. So we need Top line big-minute d-man

  • ShotgunCharlie

I think you are 100% correct. I have let go of my grabo disappointment and am happy that we are actually seeing change. Imagine nonis and leiweke stood pat? How pissed would everyone be?

    • Mind Bomb

ShotgunCharlie  I would be estatic, better than Weiss for 6 years, or Riberio,

  • Uncle Otis

    Yaknowwhat
    Well said and bang on!

  • theacs1966

Here’s a noodle scratcher, do we see the Leafs trade Reimer?  That trade for Bernier is still not sitting right with me.

    • Dink

theacs1966 I think he stays, at least til February

    • Burtonboy

theacs1966 Not yet . In a yr or two maybe

-Keon- I haven’t like a Leaf coach since Burns.  Wilson was the worse.  I like the way Charlye handled Kadri and Lupul.

    • Dink

theacs1966 -Keon- He made the playoffs, who cares if they like him (nobody liked Punch Imlach)

      • theacs1966

  • Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs

Personally Im ok with Grabos rant and dont see it as anything a
future team should be worried about. This is a long way from doing a
    Heatley.
He was loyal, kept his mouth shut BUT was an obvious out
the door guy the minute he signed the contract. I would go as far as
saying the Leafs signed him to the contract believing after being
offered a 1st round pick for him that even with 5.5 he was moveable. Its
just the cap hit came down further than any were expecting.
    Its
Grabos wedding today – of course his angry and bitter – hes made a life
for himself in Toronto and now hes going to be moved to a city far from
his wedding town in a matter of weeks. His wife must be absolutely
livid. All their friends that they have made here that are at the
ceremony will now become pen pals. He on his wedding day has to now face
other leafs players coming to the ceremony patting him on the back to
    consoul him rather than congratulate.
Burke had a thing of closing
the trade window over christmas to allow families to relax over
christmas which was a nice touch. Nonis has shown himself to be a bit of
a dick here even going as far only a day or two ago that they wouldnt
be exercising the right to use the second buyout. And for that
matter, even though Im not a Grabo fan, I see his anger and he is fully
justified to be angry at the top of the Leafs hierarchy that handled
    this like thoughtless amateurs.

    • Uncle Otis

      Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs
What was Nonis supposed to do?…he didn’t set the deadline date
Maybe Grabo should have selected a more NHL calendar friendly date

      • Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs

        Uncle Otis Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs
A wedding is planned of this scale a year in advance, non of us knew if there was going to be any hockey a year ago. He did all he could do, he signed a big contract for multiple years and in the end hes been Jeff Cartered.
Like I said below, I dont blame Nonis he just should have handled it differently thats all. Shows sod all class.

    • Kouba

Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs On the other hand this case could serve for the players and their agents to not overrate themselves. Ask Redden if he would sign the contract again. Grabo is kind of lucky, he can choose his next path.

      • Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs

        Kouba Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs
There is that risk that you price yourself out of your own future but I think in this instance maybe it could have been handled differently. I realise this is hockey and tough decision are part and parcel of it but it has to hurt Grabo and Im ok with his outburst. Of course Im ok with Nonis for doing this as well, his job is to make these tough decisions and make the Leafs better but I think Grabo should have been brought to one side and said there is a real possibility that if we dont get a good deal for you then we will buy you out. Dont spring it on him the night before his wedding. Why does his wife have to stand there and know that in her husbands mind he isnt happy rather seithing with rage. It ruins the day not just for him but the looking back on memories. It was just handled wrong.

        • Kouba

Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs Kouba I get your point and it is nice to see that humanists still exist :)

        • Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs

          Kouba Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs
I sometimes wonder on here, lol. Its all too easy to see these athletes as robots, having to better last years stats and have nothing outside of the hockey world but that isnt life. Who would want to watch robot wars anyway?

    • theacs1966

Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs You want a player to be pissed in this situation.  He’s not thinking about the money he just made, he’s think, “they’re wrong, shouldn’t have done this to me and I’m pissed”.  I have no problem with it at all.  He’s just like he is on the ice, feisty and furious.

      • Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs

        theacs1966 Zeus_WilliamMapleLeafs
With you 100%. This isn’t a petulant  stamp fo the foot this is real passion and understandable as well.

  • Loric76

I wonder if maybe Nonis isn’t planning on bringing in another C, and will go with Kadri & Colborne on the offensive lines and Bolland & McClement for the defensive lines.  Can’t see Colborne as ready yet, but being thrown into the fire is certainly one way to learn
