The dog days have officially set in. A preseason countdown clock will soon be installed in the sidebar for everyone to stare at. For now, some links for your weekend:

‘We’re in conversation': Leafs, Kadri continue contract talks

Leafs could be in ‘dicey’ spot with prospect Morgan Rielly
Leafs management really seems to think Rielly has nothing left to gain in junior.

Maple Leafs’ David Bolland remembers well Honda Indy’s roar

Wendel says Leafs fans will love Clarkson
It’s already a big enough contract to live up to, these Wendel comparisons aren’t doing anybody any good.

Mirtle: Wendel Clark comparisons unfair to David Clarkson
Well he picked the number 71… I guess he’s embraced it.

Percy looking to impress at prospect camp

Ex-Leaf Dominic Moore opens up after wife’s death
Good to hear he’s doing better and is ready to return to hockey.

Hometown Boy David Clarkson Excited to Play for the Toronto …
And Toronto’s excited for their next Clark (…).

  • Burtonboy

Thanks Alec . Regardless of what happens with Rielly the kid seems the have a positive outlook. Seems to be fine with playing a leadership role with Moose Jaw if he has too.

  • Doorman

On Moores wife passing;  Boy thats a hard one; It,s like half of you dies with her.  I know!  It,s going to take some time to get his head in order.  Playing should help.  Good luck Chief!!!

  • Leafbites

The D battle appears wide open, which is obviously interesting, but I’m also curious to see who plays wing with the presumable pairing of Bolland and Kuli. If it’s a shutdown line, it needs a shutdown winger.

    • Burtonboy

      Leafbites McClement

      • Leafbites

Burtonboy Leafbites You see Joe centering 4th?

        • Burtonboy

Leafbites Burtonboy He could or maybe he gets beat out by McKegg lol

        • Leafbites

Burtonboy Leafbites Ha. I like our physical presence as much as anyone, but I think it’s time to dress one of Orr or McLaren, and get some speed and/cycle on the 4th line. Especially if this where Joe is going to fit.

        • Burtonboy

Leafbites Burtonboy I would agree with that for sure . With Clarkson and Bolland in the line up do we really have a need to dress both Orr and McLaren ? Would rather Joe,D’Amico or others get some of that ice time

    • .JVR.

      Leafbites
D’Amigo, Ashton or maybe even Colborne.

  • LeafsForLife

Great job Alec! I am hoping the Leafs send Rielly down to minors maybe after letting him play 8 or 9 games. I rather he go down and dominate and take charge. Too much pressure and high expectations along with the shit the media will write about the kid. I rather he mature and come along slowly. Boimistruck, Benning, Schenn are examples of defencemen ruined by bringing them to the Leafs at too young an age.
I expect Clarkson will do his best to emulate Wendel but its a huge hill to climb imo. I think he is best to concentrate on being David Clarkson and leave the rest alone. I am looking forward to watching the added nastiness and bite that he and Bolland will bring to the Leafs. Leafs will be very tough to play against night in and night out.
    GO LEAFS GO!

  • .JVR.

Damn guys, it’s only July and I’m already so excited for next season.
Can’t stop thinking about how good our top six is gonna be with Kadri, Kessel, Lupul, JVR and Clarkson.  I guess Bozak will be there too, but I’m not too excited about that, haha.

Hopefully Nonis can get Franson under contract long-term, that way we don’t have to go through this again for awhile and obviously Gunnarsson and Fraser will be back, as they’re going to arbitration, unless of course they’re part of a trade.  (not 100% sure whether they can even be traded if they go through arbitration)

Then, when the cap goes up next season, package a player or two and some prospects for that defence partner Phaneuf truly needs and we’ll be well on our way to contending for the Cup.

    • playoff nut

.JVR. So an I excited ! gasp the thoughts of clarkie to Kadri back tyo clarkie who shoots ,Jvr taps in the easy……..((((scores))) ,wow the homecrowd goes berserk dreams wont stop

        playoff nut
I think we’ll see Lupul on that line, but one never knows.

        • playoff nut

.JVR. playoff nut The decisions on who play with who this coming year are so very interesting imho starting with ,Kadri feeding anyone

    • Mitch92

.JVR. Same!  Top six looks like two very difficult lines to defend against.  Lots of toughness and character spread throughout the line-up.  Agree on locking up Franson long term.  I think we have a gem here, thanks Burkie!  Our overall mobility from the backend is superb now and is set to be even better with the emergence of Gardiner and Rielly.  Things are on the upswing.  Now we have to see how the pieces fit together.

  • HoRr IbLe

If Rielly goes back to to the WHL, Hopefully Moose Jaw trades him to a good team.

    • Xxxxxnew

Someone wrote here yesterday that Moose Jaw was supposed to be a better team next year, although I think the Marlies would be perfect for him. Too bad the rules say its either the NHL or junior. I’m sure hell get nine games in with the Leafs at any rate.

      • rustynail

Xxxxxnew by definition they can’t be worse?

  • mr_hanie

If I had to choose between Grabovski and McClement I choose McClement every time.

    • Tim Horton

mr_hanie what about in a shootout? Not every time 😉

      • mr_hanie

Graboski was not so good on shoot outs. Carlyle never picked him anyway

        • Tim Horton

Still Grabo – McClement has the hands of a young Komisarek.

        • Irishfanman

Tim Horton McClements PPG in the OHL were .46 .74 .90 1.09 then in the AHL he was .36 .65 .82…so he had decent hands…at the lower levels…

          (Raycrap)

    • Xxxxxnew

I didn’t mind Grabbo but no one here seems to remember the circumstances under which he came here from Montreal.

      • Xxxxxnew

Actually he was made available by Montreal because he left the team mid-seasonand went to see his agent in California after he was a healthy scratch for a game.

Cameron19 theacs1966 Ya you gotta consider the source.

His axe to grind with the leafs got bigger as the years went by. Sour after losing his asst. GM job with the leafs.

    • 4evrblue

theacs1966 most overrated player in the HISTORY of the NHL eh? thats a stupid fuckin comment lol

  • CallumConnorKnight

Toronto media just relax and quit calling Clarkson the next Wendal.

    • Cameron19

      CallumConnorKnight

This way it will be more dramatic when they start ripping him apart in a few months.  Watch them also later claim that it was the fans who thought Clarkson would be the next Wendel; attempting to paint us as ‘plan the parade’ idiots.

      • Xxxxxnew

The asked him who his favourite leaf was and it snowballed from there. Should have said Motor City Smitty.

      • theacs1966

Cameron19 CallumConnorKnight Since he retired I haven’t seen anyone that can score 46 goals and fight and hit like Clark did.  Clarkson is in that type of mold, but he can’t score like Wendel or fight as good.  If and when he does then I will compare.

        • Xxxxxnew

Poor Clarkie. Missed so many games to injury. Felt sorry for the guy.

    • 4evrblue

CallumConnorKnight If Clarkson was 21 right now and putting up the numbers he is then I would jump on the “next Wendel” bandwagon but as of now he is the next Tucker. Nothing wrong with that IMO

      • Xxxxxnew

Thing is I haven’t seen anyone call him the next wendel anywhere. All I’ve seen is Clarkson saying he had a Wendel jersey when he was a kid and some pictures of Wendel and Clarkson together at a hockey school. Only time I’ve seen “next Wendel” is in this string of posts.

    • Jordan29

Ok well nhl it is then

      • Pent_House

Jordan29 I’d give him the 9 games, and not consecutively. Let him get scratched for a few games in between. Then send him down to Junior. Then WJC. Then WHL play-off, then Marlies play-off.

      • .JVR.

        Pent_House
The only problem with doing that, is the fact he takes up a roster spot and you’d probably have to expose somebody to waivers in order to keep him.

        • JMAC17

4evrblue JMAC17 Nope, no hockey dreams last night.
Kulie could go pretty easily though…wouldnt want to see him go, but he is a perfect 2/3rd tweener….lots of teams would be interested if we wanted to move him

        • 4evrblue

JMAC17 4evrblue I know Burke is gone but when I look at the roster I get that “one of these things doesn’t belong” impression. Maybe it was never Burkie and was NoNo and Randy that never took well to Russians all these years?

        • Burtonboy

4evrblue JMAC17 I thinks its more a matter of the individual and not the nationality . No doubt you have to do your homework when signing a player from Russia especially.

        • JMAC17

4evrblue JMAC17 Dont think Grabo has anything to do with Kulimen.
Kulie had a pretty decent role on the team and played well.  Looked like RC trusted him in key situations.
Only reason he would be moved is cap management.  Might not be able to afford him soon.
Our third line is going to be great with Bolland and Kulie.

        • 4evrblue

JMAC17 4evrblue cap management would be a good excuse for them to use. All the “smoke” had to come from somewhere. Now wheres the fire?

        • Burtonboy

JMAC17 4evrblue Moving Kulie would be huge mistake IMO

        • 4evrblue

Burtonboy JMAC17 4evrblue Mine too. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the next move though.

        • Burtonboy

4evrblue Burtonboy JMAC17 Why do you think that ?

        • JMAC17

Burtonboy 4evrblue JMAC17 I hope not, but gotta think he will get 3MM+ on his next contract.  Might be too rich for our third line, especially when we need defesive upgrades…and money for Dion and Kessel.
To me, Kulie and Liles are likely gone at some point this year.
Will really really suck to lose Kulie, they longest serving current Maple Leaf.

        • Burtonboy

JMAC17 Burtonboy 4evrblue There should be enough money if its handled properly . There’s 2.6 coming off the books next season and the cap should go up at least 3-4 million more. I’m thinking Dion and Kessel will be quite reasonable with their demands. As for defensive up grades I expect that will happen with internal pieces rather then actually acquiring a player from outside the organization

Burtonboy  he has been here for years and still can’t speak the language very well. The one guy he could effectively communicate with was just bought out so now he’s essentially left alone on an island. I could see management taking that into account. Can’t be very nice to sit in a dressing room and not be able to follow the conversation.

        • Burtonboy

4evrblue Burtonboy That might be an issue but we don’t know for sure. Its up to management to help in this regard . Communicate with the player to see what he’s feeling.

        • 4evrblue

Burtonboy 4evrblue He probably doesn’t yet know himself how he will feel about it. He has never been in the dressing room without Grabs, they both came here for the 08-09 season

        • Burtonboy

4evrblue Burtonboy We will see I guess . This could be a situation where a really good captain or a vet player could make a difference by ensuring Kulie is not ignored

        • Burtonboy

4evrblue Burtonboy Just curious . Is Kulie married ?

    GOOD MORNING MLHS!!!!

  • 4evrblue

So what happens to Holzer now? Do they try to trade him to maximize value or is he going to be relegated to call up duty?

    • Burtonboy

4evrblue He will get another opportunity at camp . If he doesn’t improve I think he will be moved .

  • 4evrblue

gone to work, thanks for the morning convo folks :)

  • Dink

Reilly will be there for the 9 games, if he is too damn good then he will stay..

    • Dan39

I agree except he ain’t too damn good – his defensive play is really weak.

  • Knights2Leafs

Burtonboy  IMO Nonis was rolling the dice a little on the compliance buyouts.  I think he must have assumed Liles was moveable, otherwise wouldn’t it have made more sense to use the compliance buyouts on Liles and Grabo and make Komi a regular buyout?  It just seems strange the way the Grabo buyout came out of left field.  Do you think Nonis changed course at the last minute on Grabo?

    • Burtonboy

Knights2Leafs Burtonboy Hard to say . Frankly I wasn’t all that surprised by the Grabo buyout and I’m guessing once he had a feel for what he could get Bozie to sign for he pulled the trigger . As for Komi I feel that buyout was agreed upon when Komi went to the minors. The guy was a good soldier throughout that whole thing and I bet Nonis did him that favor.

      • Knights2Leafs

        Burtonboy
Agree on Komi, but they could have still used a regular buyout couldn’t they?
It’s remarkable how professional he has remained even after leaving the Leafs.  I’ll only hate him when he plays us.

        • peterbleafs

Knights2Leafs Burtonboy Would have been smarter to buyout Liles and trade Komi, keeping a portion of his salary.  But it is what it is.

        • Burtonboy

peterbleafs Knights2Leafs Burtonboy You can only retain 50 % so trading Komi was not an option

        • Bon Scott was a Leaf fan

          peterbleafs Knights2Leafs Burtonboy
Would have been smarter to do a normal buyout on Komi considering he only had 1 more year…..then use the compliance buyouts on Liles and Grabo (multiyear deals).

        • Burtonboy

Knights2Leafs Burtonboy He’s looking at every option to save cap space . So that’s the thinking I guess

    • Burtonboy

Knights2Leafs BurtonboyAs for Liles there is still plenty of time left to move him in a retained salary deal which is what I think will happen

      • Knights2Leafs

        Burtonboy
I hope so.  Overall, I’m happy with the moves and the only thing that bothers me is we are so tight to the cap to get all of Kadri, Gunnar, and Franson signed.  Plus Fraser. By my guestimates we are going to be short by about $1.5M.
If Rielly stays up for 9 games, won’t he also count against the cap which would put us over by about $2.4M?

        • Burtonboy

Knights2Leafs Burtonboy Remember we presently have Smith ,Holzer and Brennan counting against the cap. Thats 1.8 mil right there so its not really 9.7 as it shows on cap geek . Its actually 11.5. Its tight but it can be done IMO

        • Knights2Leafs

          Burtonboy
I’m assuming that Smith is Marlies bound and D’Amigo will be our 13th forward plus one of Brennan and Holzer will be our 7th Dman.

        • Burtonboy

Knights2Leafs Burtonboy I also wouldn’t be surprised to see many teams run 21 -22 man rosters this season.

        • Burtonboy

Knights2Leafs Burtonboy. I don’t anticipate Kadri ,Gunnar ,Franson and Fraser will cost us much over 10 mil combined so it should be doable . Moving Liles would be ideal and solve all these issues but there’s always the chance he can’t be moved . Maybe we can qualify for a buy out with an arb award putting us over the cap but that’s risky and the 3rd year of the buyout is expensive at 2.3 mil I think . A salary retained trade where we pay 1 mil of his salary would be a better option . No one said said staying cap compliant was going to be easy when you have 6 million removed lol

        • Knights2Leafs

          Burtonboy
It helps having the Marlies in Toronto I suppose, but I don’t love the idea of only having 12 forwards because it means McLaren and Orr will be playing every game.

        • Burtonboy

Knights2Leafs Burtonboy Gonna be lots of dipsy doodly with the line up this yr. The key is moving Liles or maybe someone else

  • lukethenuke

Thinking of cap situation next year… 2M comes off cap from Tucker and Army buyouts, cap will 99% chance increase a couple million (lets say 3M), so right there thats 5M increase…

    • lukethenuke

Liles will be gone by then too. and thats almost 4M gone

      • dlb eh

        lukethenuke
it’s so easy to assume Liles will be gone, but what if he re-etablishes himself as our 2nd best defensemen this year?  suddenly he’s a good cap hit, and one of the other perceived top 4 defenders becomes the moveable part since they’ll be looking for a contract renewal again soon that might be higher than Liles…
i think there’s a 50-50 chance Liles will stay.  if he does not play well enough then of course he’s the guy to move.  but there’s just no gaurantee the others will outplay him either.

    • peterbleafs

lukethenuke Cap will likely spike up big time next season to over $70 million.

      • Xxxxxnew

More cash from new CBC deal. Almost double the old one.

  • wendelsfist

Just got my daily bout of advanced stats lore.  This what I learned.

The entire leaf organization needs to go for signing Bozak.  That includes Nonis and Carlyle for wanting him.  And the Lupul, Phaneuf and Kessel for putting friendship with Bozak over wanting to win with a better center.    There has to be some crazy math to come to this conclusion.

  • maximus_asinus

I know this was probably talked to death over the last few days but there is a rumor circulating that Edmonton is interested in Phaneuf. My first instinct is that this is just a rumor to get page hits but if we entertain the notion for a second, what do you think Phaneuf is worth to the Oilers? I don’t expect Nonis to trade a weakness for a winger so maybe a center?
Sam Gagner + defense prospect + first rounder?

    • dlb eh

      maximus_asinus
we’ve committed to Bozak and Bolland and McClemment has proven his worth in gold to the coaches, so unless you’re thinking Kadri’s the odd man out, there’s no sense in looking at Gagner.  the only change at centre that i could fathom right now is a clear and undisputable upgrade.
Phaneuf rumours seem to have been reignited from an interview with Bill Watters.  he can’t stand Phaneuf and he’s not worth listening to.  EDM might have a lot of young forwards, but we have plenty of skilled forwards ourself now, so i don’t see a trade that would make sense with EDM because we would want to replace Phaneuf with an equally useful defenseman.  would they give us Justin Shultz?  i think not.  so, no trade.

      • Xxxxxnew

Depending in what happens in arbitration, Gagne is UFA next year. And I don’t think 6′ 184 lb Schultz replaces 6’3″ 215 lb Phaneuf in the heavy lifting department anyway.

        • dlb eh

          Xxxxxnew
Justin Shultz is a dynamic offensive player who is also sound in his own end of the ice.
i’m not looking to replace Phaneuf, but considering ways to build a defensive unit and fitting our future contracts/moves in under the CAP.
Shultz is really the only player from EDM i have interet in acquiring at the moment, and it’s not going to happen, so it’s just a conversation, not a wishlist and not a plan.

      • maximus_asinus

dlb eh maximus_asinus though you are right on all counts, it would be an interesting trade that alters the makeup of the entire team. Would Carlyle be bold enough to roll  Gagner / Bozak / Kadri/ Bolland down the middle with McClement playing wing on the forth line and split the TOI equally between lines?
        Lupul – Bozak – Kessel
        JVR – Gagner – Clarkson
        Kulemin – Kadri – Colborne
        McClaren – Bolland – McClement

        • dlb eh

          maximus_asinus dlb eh
i like Gagner, he is skilled like Kadri, competes hard (most nights i hear) and is pretty capable defensively as well.  so the forward lines would look good like that, sure.
Nonis is interested in putting together a winner in the next 18 months, so the key would be to make sure the defense is strong to enter next season…which gives us a year to audition and develop what we already have.
if we remove Phanuef it’s tough to put together that D corps…i think i’d prefer to go with what we have until a couple of defensive options presented themselves so i could then decide what direction to go in.

There isn’t a single player on the Devils that I want for Phaneuf.

    • maximus_asinus

Radar O’Rielly there is no package that could be worked out for Phaneuf that wouldn’t dismantle the Devils (further). Henrique, Zajac, and a defensive prospect would probably be close. Devils are in a sell low stage after a poor season I think.

    • JMAC17

Radar O’Rielly The Dion talk is laughable, we will be in arguably the toughest division next year…we cant lose our best and one of our toughest players.

      • Burtonboy

JMAC17 Radar O’Rielly Eklund strikes again lol

      • Jay_Berg

Doesn’t seem to make sense. However, Dion being shopped has been speculated by more than just Eklund. Whether we like it or not it appears possible he could be moved.

      • Savo43

JMAC17 Radar O’Rielly It seriously shocks me that other teams fans don’t know how good Dion is. He has made leaps since he’s gotten here.

        • 4evrblue

Savo43 JMAC17 Radar O’Rielly There really isn’t another Dman I trust to shut down the opposition in the final minutes of a game like I trust Dion. Our blueline would be fucked without him right now.

        • Savo43

4evrblue Savo43 JMAC17 Radar O’Rielly I wonder how much of that is a misperception on our behalf. I too believe that we’d be fucked, but i wonder if thats the truth..Who could step up that we weren’t aware of and so fourth i wonder, and could they do an adamant job? I dno. Phaneuf is awesome though, i hope i don’t have to see that question answered tbh.

        • 4evrblue

Savo43 4evrblue JMAC17 Radar O’Rielly Franson has the most potential to step up IMO as he plays a two way game also. Gardiner and Liles are all offense, Gunner and Fraser are all defense. The best of the best are all around players generally.

4evrblue Savo43 JMAC17 Radar O’Rielly its sort of fucked with him on it too … remember the second third and fourth Boston goals i game seven ….

dlb eh Radar O’Rielly You see this is what i don’t get…Lou isn’t considered stupid to Leaf fans even though he signed a 17 YEAR CONTRACT! (for any player that IMO is stupid)…But Nonis signs a 7 year, and he’s all of the sudden non-trustworthy. Not saying you btw, but thats how the microscope works out here i swear lol.

at the time he signed that contract the feeling was there was pressure from ownership…it felt reluctant to me, not to you?

People doubting that the Leafs would trade Phaneuf without getting a king’s ransom have too much faith in Nonis IMO.

    • dlb eh

      quintensmids
too much faith?  saying that suggests you think a fair trade would equate to a king’s ransom in return.  if you think there’s merit in moving Phaneuf for less, then you wouldn’t think poorly of nonis for doing so.  so, what do you mean?

      • quintensmids

dlb eh quintensmids if you DOUBT that Nonis would accept anything less than a king’s ransom (implying that you believe that he would only settle for a king’s ransom), you have too much faith in Nonis.

Personally I believe that’s the only way we should trade Dion, but doubt Nonis is smart enough to realize that.

I have full faith in Nonis (him being a Burke disciple).  The only issue I have thus far is him giving 7 years to Clarkson (though I imagine that was the only way to land him…and we’ll deal with the term later on down the line).  I’m down with all of Nonis’ other moves though.  He’s very patient (which I like) and he won’t be bent over in a trade (which I also like).  Nonis is doing just fine.
Regarding Dion…unless we get equal or better value in return….he goes no where.  Nonis isn’t going to trade Dion just for the sake of trading him.  It would leave a huge hole on our backend.  Not going to happen.
          In Nonis I trust.
