If the Leafs can pull this off, it would be a huge win not only in keeping Boston behind them in the divisional race, but in boosting confidence for a banged up team facing extended time without Bolland and Bozak.
Keys to the Game for the Leafs:
1 – The Bruins defense pinch heavily almost every play and force the Leafs to play on the boards, which is a weakness for them. The Leafs need to keep the puck 3ft or so off the boards and make the Bruins play in the open ice — not necessarily the Bruins strength – and use aerial passes when available if those options are not available. If the Leafs don’t work on this, they will not be able to break out with efficiency this evening.
2 – Play the Bruins hard whistle-to-whistle. Do not engage in in after whistle skirmishes (looking at you, David Clarkson).
3 – The Bruins send two men in and try to force d-to-d passes; passes have to be firm, crisp and on point.
4 – Try not to let the Bruins consistently set up below goal line in on your own zone. The Bruins feast on a cycle and on great board play once they have the D facing the wrong way from the net.
5 – The Bruins defense is more mobile than it was last season, but stretching them out when the opportunity presents itself will generate odd man rushes.Lines: Leafs vs. Bruins, November 9, 2013.

... yes Rielly might have helped tonight. Or he might have got hurt on a dirty Bruins hit because he doesn't know how they play. Or he might have screwed up and it ruined his confidence for months.
Part of patiently developing players is NOT playing them.
Leafs need guys to take some of the weight off Phaneuf. The Bruins banged him up too much. I got aches and pains just watching
@DJBrianBurkebRUINS DOMINATED THE 1ST, lEAFS THE 2ND. JVR,s 4 minute penalty was the difference.
Next spring with Bolland, Bozak, and Broll in the lineup, we take them 4 games to 2 in playoffs
The bruins were allowed to play Dirty especially in the 3rd period. That has a way of defeating you physically and more importantly psychologically.
The sooner we get rid of Kulemin and Ranger the better. (and I was really rooting for them both to make a comeback)
It was Fraser's first game back so I'll cut him some slack. He did a good job clearing Chara out in front of the net. He can be useful. He needs to be paired with someone that can quickly get the puck out while he clears bodies. He and Franson worked well for a while last year. Him and Ranger paired together is just an absolute train wreck. I can't believe Carlyle was a defensemen in the NHL looking at how he's handled the back end the past 2 seasons so far
I wasn't on the board during the game, but they mentioned that the Bruins outshot the Leafs constantly in the first. In the second with the Leafs had the edge they showed it once and talked about it once.
I love my leafs! However we are one of the worst puck possession teams in the NHL. That is why we get outshot so much.
I thought this game would be a good test as to how far we have come, since playing Boston in the playoffs. We were outmuscled, getting beat to the puck, and continue to turn over the puck.
However I believe we are a better team than we were last year. We will come out of this and be better it is just tough to watch this team continue to turn the puck over and play catch-up.
We made Boston look better than they were tonight. Clarkson has yet to find his game, and this team has yet to play with a healthy compliment of players. When we do, I pray we can gel and have big stretches of winning streaks! Go Leafs Go!
Ranger hit his guy in front of the net, on a scramble. It just so happens that Reimer and him get tangled up. Someone's got to take Bergeron there.
WTF was Phaneuf doing on that EN goal? It's two fucking strides. Take them. Ring it around the boards. I see him do that behind the net all of the time too. Skate to the puck, for fuck's sakes.
@wiski In Montreal it's much earlier. Hated it when I lived there. Sad days ahead for them. Not only do they get less sun, they have the Habs to fill all those dark, cold nights.
@Jmessih Dion, if he handed you a pamphlet, don't read it.
@Jmessih yup he is legit
@Jmessih no Bolland
@NotInsane Second night in a row too. I can't complain at all about his play this year.
That's why we lost this game. 5v5 might not have been perfect (is it ever?) but it wasn't to blame
@rustynail And the actual empty netter, which was also a gift.
@darthNihilus I like Kules, but wtf was he doing when he lost his stick in the first. I was yelling at my tv for him to get off or get a stick, completely useless there.
It's Fraser's 2nd game. He actually played pretty well last night and looked a little gassed tonight with the back to back.
The train wreck didn't allow an even strength goal against all night.
@The_Polish_Cannon He won a Norris. We've played better the last two years than we have in over a decade.
All marginal except for Krejci's and judging by his reaction it was unintentional. One game at most
I thought that initially but on review he kept his elbow down.
@PEIleafnation It was, so was Chara's on Raymond. So was the elbow on Ashton, I could go on.
@Beleafer29 Despite the loss, the Leafs played them pretty well from the second period on. B2B situation + depleted lineup makes it impressive how close they kept the game. With more consistent officiating I believe they would've at lest gotten a point
@Beleafer29You didnt watch the 2nd period. oR 3RD
@Beleafer29 Outside of that 2:09 (thanks CBC, could you make that graphic bigger), Bruins were slow and heavily helped by the refs.
@Lescott @The_Polish_Cannon I know he's won a Norris thats what frustrates me. There's still no cohesion between the forwards and the defenseman on the breakout. They keep trying the hail marry passes all the time. This team should be able to initiate a clean zone entry by now. This trend of bad defenseman that can do no wrong with him is getting old as well… Kostka, Holzer, Ranger. It took an embarrassing game 1 and injuries for him to ice the team and pairings we called for al year in the playoffs
Oh, don't get me wrong. If a Leaf did that it would definitely be a penalty. It's just that at least it was less blatant than the others.
