2014 Sochi Olympics

2014 Sochi Olympics

2014 Sochi Winter Olympics coverage from Maple Leafs Hot Stove.

It's two straight Olympic gold medals for Team Canada. And as bizarre as it sounds, it was never in doubt after the Latvia game. Goaltending, as it turns out, was only a problem for Canada in the sense that it was the only reason Canada didn't beat the USA and Sweden by a combined 10-0 score. Steve Yzerman, the management, Mike Babcock and the coaching staff came up smelling like roses after a couple of masterful displays of near hockey perfection in the semi and gold medal finals. They're charged with the task of assembling the right combinations  out of the...

CANADA WINS! A dominant showing for a 1-0 scoreline, the only thing still missing from this total team performance by Team Canada was a little more finish, although Jonathan Quick was fantastic. The gold medal game goes Sunday morning at 7 a.m. EST vs. Alfredsson (BOO) and Team Sweden. *** Hockey history in the making this afternoon in Sochi. Go Canada Go (with strong performances from Kessel and JvR indivdually). Pretty interesting graphic here: Not that it means much in the context of one game. This is going to be something.

It's the first Olympic meeting between the Team Canada and Team USA men's national hockey teams since the Vancouver 2010 gold medal game. Where to begin? Nothing less than the ideal is acceptable when it comes to Hockey Canada, but let's think about what Canada has done well versus what they haven’t done so well so far in this tournament. What hasn’t been Canada’s problem is their defence and goaltending. What has been a problem is scoring enough goals on excessive quantities of shots. Are Canadians more confident if Team Canada is entering  a game against the high-scoring Americans with questions...

Canadian-born Leafs fans will have their loyalties conflicted this Friday afternoon when Team USA takes on Team Canada in the Olympic semifinals. On one hand we have Team Canada’s gold medal hopes, on the other we have Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk scoring on Carey Price. Hmmm. The thrilling nature of the one-off elimination format is that, regardless of how each team got here, it’s going to be decided by one 60-minute game between two amazing rosters. Certainly the USA has looked more convincing; no one has been able to quiet them as the Finns and Latvians managed to...

The do-or-die games for Team Canada start against an unexpected challenger in this afternoon's quarterfinal, Team Latvia. Team Latvia shut down a Switzerland roster with eight NHL regulars in yesterday's qualification round, leaning heavily on Edgars Masalskis, who made 32 saves in the 3-1 win. The Latvians doubled Swizterland in shots in the first and took a 2-0 lead, which proved too much to overcome for Team Switzerland. Many Canadian fans were apprehensive about their expected meeting with the Swiss due to their ability to hang in with the big guys (lost to Sweden 1-0 and beat the Czechs...

Phil Kessel has been the best hockey player on the planet since the start of 2014, leading the NHL (28pts) and now the Olympics in points. Here's his latest divine revelation: A natural hat trick in Sunday's game versus Slovenia. That first move = Wow. The cross-crease goal off of Joe Pavelski's pass (hard to tell from the highlights) was batted in from knee high level. How good does it feel that a Toronto Maple Leaf is the talk of the hockey world? Patrick Kane calls Phil Kessel "probably the best guy I've ever played with. He's unbelievable."— Maple Leafs HotStove (@LeafsNews)...

Canada's possessional dominance met Finland's energetic, trapping style in game three of the preliminary stages. Drew Doughty's regulation and overtime goals were enough to pull out a tight 2-1 victory. Canada will take on the winner of Team Switzerland (another pesky trapping team with good goaltending) or Latvia (not likely to win) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Team Canada's first real test comes today versus Finland. No P.K. Subban or Martin St. Louis, Patrick Sharp draws back in. Go Canada and Go Komarov. Team Canada strutted to a 6-0 victory over Austria this afternoon in what was a more satiating scoreline for Canadian hockey fans. More offence from the defence got Team Canada on the board early. An easy faceoff win by Jonathan Toews sent the puck back to Drew Doughty, who threw an-off balance shot through traffic on net that handcuffed the Austrian goalie. After Ryan Getzlaf threw a great aerial pass for Corey Perry to bat down in a stunning display of puck control, Perry made a slick drop pass to Shea Weber, who launched another high-rising clapper over the glove hand...

Canada looks to build up some goal differential today vs. Austria after *only* beating Norway 3-1 yesterday. The Austrians looked horrendous defensively vs. Finland yesterday, as you might imagine when conceding eight goals, but have some quick footed forwards who came out ready to play and caught the Finns by surprise with a goal 30 seconds into the game. The two sides were square at 2s after 20 minutes. Besides captain Thomas Vanek, Michael Grabner is another to be weary of, especially with his wheels on the big ice. He had a hat trick against the Finns. He’s been playing on...

Shea Weber

What’s the acceptable scoreline against Norway? Is 3-1 too competitive? Should we panic? All joking aside, it was consistent dominance throughout by Team Canada. There will be some complaints about too little conversion of possession into more goals, but that’s more of a testament to Norway goaltender Lars Haugen, who stopped 35/38 shots, as well as loads of blocked shots by the Norwegians. Apparently, the webcast had no Glenn Healy on it for those watching at work, which is the one of the most compelling arguments we've ever heard for getting a bad office job. It’s always fun seeing how a team...

This morning, The Phil did a bit of this: And then Phil and JvR did some of this: En route to a 7-1 win over Slovakia which included a goal and two assists for Kessel and two assists for JvR. Now it's Team Canada's turn to look convincing while destroying a lesser hockey nation. PK Subban and Matt Duchene will not play; Martin St. Louis and Dan Hamhuis will be the 13th forward and 7th defenceman respectively. Let's go, Canada.

The Maple Leafs' dynamic 'Murican duo takes their talents to the international stage starting this morning versus Slovakia. Word has it Joe Pavelski will center the Leafs' wingers, comprising a line with 84 combined goals in the NHL this season. That's Team USA's first line whether they label it that or not. The game starts at 7:30 a.m. EST on CBC. Your rosters for this Group A matchup presented by 888sport: USA Goalies: Jimmy Howard, Ryan Miller, Jonathan Quick Defensemen: John Carlson, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler, Paul Martin, Ryan McDonagh, Brooks Orpik, Kevin Shattenkirk, Ryan Suter Forwards: David Backes, Dustin Brown, Ryan Callahan, Patrick...

The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics - Men's Hockey Schedule UPDATED: FEBRUARY 18TH, 2014 The Olympic Mens Hockey Schedule as now moved away from the preliminary stages of the hockey tournament, and onto the qualification stages. As Leaf fans, and primarily Canadians, there's an allegiance to root for the Canadian Olympic Men's Hockey Team, but with 3 Toronto Maple Leafs going to the 2014 Sochi Olympics, one for Russia (Nik Kulemin) and two going for Team USA (Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk) there could be a certain contingent of fans in the camp of: "If Team Canada is out of it early, I'm...

Phil Kessel

Earlier today we were gifted this most glamourous of shots. Wyatt Arndt has set the bar pretty high with his Kesselquin Romance series, but that's no reason we can't pile on. If you want to join the photochopping party, hack away at the picture above. Below is my "Phil Kessel is America" series, and a couple of bonus chops. If you're feeling up to it throw yours in the comment section. A slightly less ridiculous American Uniform My Spirit Animal Was there ever any doubt who the Greatest American Hero is?
