Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston is reporting that the Winter Classic is going to come across the border to Toronto in 2017.
The planned location for it would be BMO field, with extensive renovations to outdoor facility taking place. MLSE CEO Tim Leiweke has been in talks with Municipal, Provincial and Federal Officials to make this happen and they all appear on board.
This dovetails nicely into the Maple Leafs 100th anniversary season.
The cost for expanding the woefully small stadium, would be twice it’s $60,000,000 initial build price, said Leiweke.
“It’s big money, huge money,” Said Lewieke
“It fits a lot of needs,” he said. “It renovates it for TFC, it certainly renovates it for the Pan Am Games, it renovates it for rugby. The Grey Cup would be phenomenal in an outdoor setting in Toronto on the lake, but (the Winter Classic is) clearly one of the things we put on the wishlist.”
“The city, the province and the feds have all told us it’s important to them from an economic stimulus standpoint because we see what it’s doing to the economy in Detroit now – imagine what would happen in Toronto.”
Anybody gonna watch that Team Canada thingy before the Classic?......interested to hear the process behind picking some players over others.....I love hearing different perspectives on players.
Leafs prospects making an impact at world junior
Wow on BMO
That would pave the way for the Argo's to play there allowing the Jays to put real grass in Skydome.
Still high from yesterdays game ,Corson scores the Domi wtf then Sittler ,holy crap that was good to see them comeback to force a shoot out that sucked imo ,this was a time for sudden death imo
and happy new years everybody
sorry. i hate begging lol. but a link that will work outside of canada for the game please and thank you. i will 100% share the 24/7 episode 4 link within a couple hours of airing (Russia time)!!!
OMG....I'm really not sure whether I should be downing more Tylenol or cracking open a beer.....my head hurts....what to do, what to do...lol
I think the 2017 game is great, but I'd rather think about it tonight, tomorrow or next week. For now it's enough just to think about todays game. Go Leafs Go.
Love that it looks like Toronto will be getting the Winter Classic in 2017, as I was thinking we'd probably have to settle for the Heritage Classic and then Ottawa announced it's plan to host it in 2017, which had really pissed me off.
Anyways, how exactly does it cost $120,000,000 to add some seats to the Stadium, when the Stadium only cost $60,000,000 to build in the first place?
If this does happen, I hope they're smart enough to expand the length to allow the Argonauts to play there!!
@mbails no...they had to submit there line up before the wings....Carlyle covered his basis... if Datsuyk line starts Dion stays and Gardiner changes any other line which happened... Dion changed for Frason
@mbails cause of Berni
About time ;)
I'm PVRing it.
Will watch it later
@.JVR.hello just passing the great leafs news to the wing nut accross the street
MALMO, Sweden — Maple Leafs fans got a nice New Year’s
gift from Switzerland coach Colin Muller.
Leafs prospect Fabrice Herzog leads the Swiss with three goals at the 2014 world junior and Muller dropped the name of a big-time NHL forward when discussing Herzog on Wednesday.
“Fabrice Herzog right now for us is, if not our best forward … he is really good around the net,” Muller said. “He has the long reach, a Rick Nash sort of style player. Works his tail off. Back checks hard. Knows where to go, knows the front of the net. Wins pucks on battles with stick. Good kid. I really like him. He has improved in the last six months.”
Can Herzog, who was picked 142nd overall by the Leafs in the 2013 NHL draft, make it to the NHL?
“He could be close,” Muller said. “He is sort of an awkward skater right now, I think he is still just getting into his body size.”
Herzog can score. In 34 games with the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the 6-foot-2, 194-pound forward has 20 goals and nine assists.
“There are a lot of good players there and I like my role there,” Herzog said. “I think it is better when I play in the Quebec league than the Swiss junior league. I think I can learn more.”
Herzog is one of three Leafs picks playing in the tournament.
Frederik Gauthier, the first-rounder last June, is back at his natural position of centre for Canada and won three faceoffs late in the 3-2 win against the United States on Tuesday.
And the Leafs figure they uncovered a gem in Swedish forward Andreas Johnson, a seventh-round pick in 2013. He has been sharp in the world junior, scoring three goals and recording three assists in four games.
“You hope this is where he is going to be, but maybe a bit of a surprise, I guess,” Leafs director of amateur scouting Dave Morrison said, “but we had high hopes for him because we thought he had that ability.
“He is really smart and he just has natural offensive ability. He just seems to find the seams. He can shoot the puck and he can really pass the puck.”
@TheCanucksnaphook I hope to get off of my couch soon. Will keep you updated.
@mbails In case you still need a link, try this one.
Does the CBC stream work outside of Canada?
I could see the Winter Classic eventually becoming the All-Star Game.
@wendelsway1uhhh no taking tylenol after drinking young lady, people have died shortly after doin that ,so yes beer or breakfast
@wendelsway1 I'd try the beer first, if that doesn't work, ... um ahh, try another one. good luck.
@Jmessih If MLSE buys the Argos it'll be only to somehow turn them into an NFL team. I'm surprised that Rogers isn't being challenged for having their hands in so many cookie jars at once.
I agree, two hours from now the puck drop for the 2014 Winter Classic will be imminent and all MLHS wants to talk about is the possible 2017 edition?
Come on boys, lets get back on track!
@MaxwellHowe Na, 2017 is still a long way away. Lot's of time to chan .... Oh you mean todays game, I'm getting ahead of myself. lol -- I haven't heard anything, and don't really expect any major change.
@BurtonboyOf the forward Leafs have drafted I think that Johnson, Brown and Herzog will be big surprises.
Johnson makes his goals against nations like Finland and Russia, not against Norway
@Mind BombGood morning MB ready for breaky yet ,leftover wings ? lmao
@Mind Bomb Morning MB......Happy New Year.....Leafs are getting a big win today. :)
@Leafs rule @wendelsway1 Yep, this from Mens Health Magazine.http://www.menshealth.com/health/3-hangover-you-mistakes-you-always-make
Tylenol Be careful of what pain medication you take for that jackhammer in your head, says Robert Swift, M.D., a professor at Brown University’s Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies.
Acetaminophen—the active ingredient in Tylenol—needs to be metabolized by the liver just like alcohol. A night of drinking disrupts your liver from fully breaking down the toxins in acetaminophen, risking liver damage even at lower doses. Stick with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen. (Avoid aspirin, too, since it could upset your stomach).
Could definitely see MLSE buying the Argos and moving them to BMO after the expansion is complete.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see an NFL team in Toronto, but I don't see the league expanding anytime soon and I'm sure the League would rather put a team in LA than Toronto.
It would make it relevant again, that's for sure
