The moment you’ve all been waiting for (and it lives up to the hype) – Phil Kessel up close and personal on the final episode of HBO 24/7:
The Phil Kessel vs. Dion Phaneuf Ping Pong Rematch (same result):
@wiski I'd like to see a Dion - P.K pairing on team CDN. You know like how JVR and Kessel should be with Statsny. Get a preview of the Leafs new starting line up in a couple of years ;)
@wiski Letang injuries really derailed him this year... interesting to see if they still like him or not despite this.. Bob thinks No and id agree
@wiski 4 or 5 centers playing as wingers.
@wiski Not bad, similar to what I have but I really don't think Nash should be there at all, or have couture on the first line. I also think we should take Kunitz in the extra forward spot just in case Crosby can't find good linemates. If he does though, Kunitz sits. Sort of a low-risk high-reward thing.
@wiski Hate that Vlasic, Hamhuis and Bouwmeester will be our Olympians - if he's accurate in his guesses.
@wiski man im jealous of them
@Bobsyouruncle I say we swap Franson and a pick for Andrew MacDonald. He's apparently on the market and is a UFA at season's end. I'm sure we could get him signed for under 3. Hell that's more than his entire contract.
@Bobsyouruncle And the 4-0 goal was on him, too (or was it the 5-0). I actually didn't think the game was THAT uneven despite the score at that point. We had a ton of chances, hit some posts - our typical scoring chances that aren't shots. Franson is just out-matched on the 2nd pair, and Gardiner looked to be on the top pair, too. Mind you, it was one game for Gardiner, and one where they played with only 5 D, so small sample size. I think we've seen enough to know Franson is bottom pair. Almost have to move him, because he's going to want 3.5 or more, and his stats will support that in arbitration.
@Bobsyouruncle His value is being right handed, a booming shot and offence. Aside from the right handed shot, the leafs have other players that can contribute. Ideally, he is replaced by another defensive right handed dman.
@Bobsyouruncle the kreider goal where he blew past franson was his fault too. Never let a guy beat you imo, just take him out and take the penalty
@Black_Hawk @wiski Yea, Teravainen looks good. He was touted as a guy that might be a surprise top 10 pick, and even mentioned in the top 5. But, they mix in some duds for all their great picks, too. Beach and Olsen were high picks that amounted to nothing, same with Morin. They did very, very well with Saad. We'll see about Teravainen.
@Bobsyouruncle @Cameron19 Yea, exactly. Watching Pittsburgh a few times lately, I also noticed how opinions about players can be over-stated. Many say that Orpik is slow, and granted, he looked slow today against the Jets - but I actually thought he looked pretty quick to pucks in the last few games i saw him in. Funny how players have up and down games.
Our problem is simply that we don't have enough good players yet. If we had an extra good forward or two, and another proper D-man, we likely wouldn't be noticing the extremely debilitating effects of Kadri/Lupul not clicking, or Franson constantly erring in a role that is often too much for him. It's not some grand indictment of the team's soul, heart, locker-room or any other nonsense. Carlyle's system may play a role in not getting the best out of what we have, but at the end of the day, with more good players, that likely isn't an issue either....
@PepTalk @vinoa @Cameron19 @wiski I don't know about that. Bouwmeester and Pietrangelo are having a great year. Maybe Hamhuis and Vlasic? I haven't seen enough of the other guys to say Dion's been better than them. I'll definitely say that Keith, Doughty and Weber were all locks from the beginning. One or 2 of those guys, sure...but definitely not half of them.
@Black_Hawk @vinoa @Bobsyouruncle Yeah and he's led the league the last couple of years in blocked shots. Plays a ton of minutes and puts up some points. The problem with a straight swap is that MacDonald makes 550k this year. I'm sure the Isles will want a lot more from a team so up against the cap like the Leafs.
@Cameron19 @Black_Hawk @Bobsyouruncle yeah thats true but if we cud get something of good value for him i wud move him. but then again if he could turn it around and start dumping crosby on his head again he would be a solid d man for us. I think it all depends on what gardner gets. I dont see us able to keep both of them.
@Black_Hawk @Cameron19 @Bobsyouruncle Well, either way, it won't be a huge deal. If we really don't want to pay him we can take him to arbitration and ask for a 2 year deal - which would mean only 1 more year of him (trade him the following summer). He would be a fantastic bottom pair D - albeit overpaid.
@mcloki what a slump it is Kadri looks like a complety different player out there, he cant even make a pass without it getting intercepted let alone skate with a little speed.
Say it's a sophomore slump. And learning. We will get through the tough times. And trust me they are not over yet.
@mcloki We shouldn't knee jerk. Franson is struggling as a second pairing compared to last year where in played well with Fraser as a third pair. We need better second pairing depth be it internal or trade. But we have lots of problems on the team. If Franson is more about offence then defence, then between Gards/Reilly I don't see him being the best fit for the team.
It would be a knee jerk reaction. They need to add D not subtract. Unles Franson in a package brings back Duchene, Eberle or that ilk.
@mcloki I have no clue. It just seems Franson main strengths aside from his right handed shot are duplicated in the leafs line up if he can't shutdown and play good defence.
