GDT: Devils at Maple Leafs (7 p.m., Leafs TV)

1392
TORONTO, ON- NOVEMBER 8 - Leafs Phil Kessell (81) scores first goal of the game as the Toronto Maple Leafs take on theNew Jersey Devils at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, November 8, 2013. David Cooper/Toronto Star

Four straight regulation losses to teams below them in the Eastern Conference standings, knocking them out of a wildcard spot, have the Maple Leafs at an all time low in the Randy Carlyle era. Here’s another team nearby in the East the Leafs need to be able to beat in the Devils, who are tied with the Maple Leafs with 47 points through 46 games. Like the Rangers and Islanders earlier in the week, the Devils are coming into the ACC in the second game of a back to back (beat the Panthers in OT last night).

Compounding the Leafs’ issues, it sounds like a group of Leaf players are suffering from either the flu or food poisoning. Either a team dinner took place with some bad chicken present or the brown bottle flu has spread after a shaker at Phil and Tyler’s last night.

Jonathan Bernier is expected to start again for the Leafs. No word yet on whether Paul Ranger steps in or if the defence remains the same.

    On paper , Leafs win

All we need is effort and determination . Haven’t seen much of that since NY Day though

  • mike_84

TheCanucksnaphook what are they doing now?

  • mike_84

Damn its only 4. still 3 hours till puck drop.

  • Jay_Berg

Well give your head a shake for defending Carlyle

  • mike_84

Public service announcement Helix is about to start on showtime. It was recommended by another MLHS user. I watched the first 30 mins and it seemed interesting.

TheCanucksnaphook Jay_Berg PPP strikes me as a debate club that focusses on  #s rather then a hockey analysis site.  I’m out of my element there both with debating and math.

    TheCanucksnaphook mike_84 What no Sushi?

  • Jay_Berg

I’m not convinced he’s a good coach. He’s a dinosaur who is living in the past. His coaching is completely out dated.

  • Dangle_My_Berries

TheCanucksnaphook GOD! now there are literally 18 wheelers going over a cliff?? WTF is GOING ON?

Jay_Berg I don’t think Carlyle is some amazing coach but I’ve been more impressed with him then whatever Ron Wilson never accomplished.

  • mike_84

    ingy56 wendelsfist Xxxxxnew with Reimer?

  • dlb eh

Carlyle doesn’t sound stupid to me in his press conference.  His reasons for sitting Gardiner (aka mind-boggling to some) are in line with criticism he’s received here.  Much like Wilson was, this coach is smarter than we are still.  I’m over myself and accept it.

  • http://i.imgur.com/MyKj5C3.gif ingy56

mike_84 ingy56 wendelsfist Xxxxxnew Possibly, I wouldn’t count on it though. Only GM who sits on his hands more is Cheveldayoff.

  • wendelsfist

dlb eh Eakins sat Yakupov.  And Therrien benched Subban and played worse skaters.   This stuff happens but I don’t see it as his worst mistake and perhaps even a mistake.

  • wendelsfist

CanuckUKinToronto dlb eh And Wilson played a goonless 4th line with better skilled players and what good did that prove?  He never got playoffs.  No. On the other hand a injury (Reimer) derailed the leafs from making the playoffs.

  • wiski

dlb eh Obsessive compulsive can come across as intelligent, but his obsessive line matching will be his downfall

  • http://i.imgur.com/MyKj5C3.gif ingy56

wendelsfist dlb eh Steve Kasper benched Cam Neely for an entire game. Made him dress and sat his ass … in Toronto. Steve Kasper is the director of pro scouting for the Leafs, but he knows squat about coaching. I sure hope he isn’t giving input.

  • wendelsfist

CanuckUKinToronto wendelsfist dlb eh Under Wilson, Reimer got concussed and then never returned to form until the following year.  Under carlyle, two of this centre have been injured for large part of the season.

  • Burtonboy

TheCanucksnaphook Need players who can do both Phook .So far we haven’t had that under Wilson or Carlyle

  • TheBlueTruth

I am surprised that Franson is not sitting. I get that moves right now are difficult …do to cap and the inability to sent players down but that is a move that could and should of happened. Right shot or not Franson is hurting us!

  • wendelsfist

CanuckUKinToronto dlb eh And further in the previous season, Wilson sent Reimer to the AHL instead of keeping him up and played two worse veterans in Monster and Gus until the January.  He did the same with Kadri and sent him to the AHL and played lombardi.    Who did Wilson ever develop – Schenn?

  • wiski

She’s blowin had in Denver boys, who’s got the better running game?

  • wendelsfist

CanuckUKinToronto wendelsfist dlb eh Carlyle is not getting the most out of this roster either because of his system or in ability to get the guys to buy in.  That said, we can’t really let the players off the hook either.  Both sides need to up their game.

  • wiski

TheBlueTruth He has to spend his way out of his recession 😉

    bob rae

  • dlb eh

his personnel decisions can be questioned, but i think he’s making a concious effort to not bring guys in all the way until other things are settled. he wants the core guys to right this shit rather than look to rookies for the answers.
aka Holland. right now you can either give him Kadri’s role or you can let Kadri work it out. some see Holland with defensive capabilities and wonder if he could knock McClemment down a rung, but the coach is showing faith in a hard working veteran who has got the job done for him before. he acknowledged that line is not giving much in the way of offense, but it’s clear Carlyle believes they’ll get that shutdown job done for him, (and it’s up to scoring lines to score, then).
i think the “room” understands and appreciates what’s happening. Holland will have his time when he continues to earn it. i like that the coach is giving Kadri the chance. he had his slow approach just like Franson did (where they saw the press-box or got sent down) now it’s time to treat them like men because, frankly, the coach needs to know what they are exactly. if you sit them out now you’re effectively crossing them off the list for next year already.
t’ll work out for the better i think, to get it right when deciding who needs to go in the summer and who is to resign and be a part of this team.

  • wendelsfist

TheBlueTruth Franson saving grace is the fact he plays for a coach who refuses to have a line up with out a right handted man.

  • wiski

TheCanucksnaphook Have fun snap, shame about the shirt. 😉
