(Draft Day Mashup) The Day Has Arrived

(Draft Day Mashup) The Day Has Arrived

1857
2014 NHL Entry Draft

Will the Maple Leafs stick at eight? Who will they pick at 8? Will they move an RFA to grab another pick or two for tomorrow? Could we see something more earth-shattering? We’ll find out over the course of the next 12 hours.

The rumours are aplenty. Jason Spezza (in an apparent acquire-and-flip scenario, past tense, according to Bob McKenzie), Milan Michalek and Martin Brodeur are some of the names getting batted around the Leafs rumour mill.  It’s all likely BS typical of this time of year, but you never know.

With the sense that there is no consensus number one prospect but a fair amount of depth to the top 10-12 picks, there may be some movement up and down the order on the draft floor making this day all the more interesting.

At the very least, we know Leafs Nation will erupt in debate over the draft selection of a certain 18-year-old kid only a tiny fraction of the fanbase has seen enough to justify having an opinion on.

Let the fun begin.

No pressure Ekblad. Despite everyone saying you aren't pronger you are about to be traded to the team hosting that draft that actually wants you to replace pronger.

I've been very critical of Nonis today (along with every other day) but I truly wish he comes in and blows us away this offseason and proves me wrong.

I'm 3 beers deep and I think i've drank my negativity away now, feeling optimistic! He better do something soon though after another 6 I'm going to get pissed off at him again

@TheCanucksnaphook Or the #5 pick, which is currently held by an idiot GM and you'd get to pick whoever's left out of the big 5.

@Jay_Berg The minute he signs a long term deal the clock starts ticking. He'd be smart to rent a place rather than buy.

I'd really like to see Philly do something really stupid here and blow their wad on a draft pick

@Burtonboy ahh I knew Philly would be the ones to do it, hometown of the draft always tries to make a big splash

@loomx @TheCanucksnaphook I'm not big on settling for "wahts left" - last time they did that they got Schenn.

Go big, get 1 or 3 (ideally 1) and take control of your fate. Get the player yo want, not the one 4 teams didn't want.

@Jay_Berg Jets.  Concussed Kypreos has memory lapses - thinks they're still in Atlanta

@ingy56 @Jay_Berg too bad contract lengths are limited now, otherwise he'd have an 18 year deal in front of him by July 2nd

@ShotgunCharlie @JMAC17 @ingy56 Just a hunch really...I havent heard anything linking him there...but just seems like an ANA thing to do....big risk....at a time they can afford it.

@Greg Fenton @loomx @TheCanucksnaphook This is ridiculous to start an argument over. We don't know what's being asked for for the #1 or #3 picks. If it's way too much and doesn't make sense, but a there's a trade for the 5th that makes sense than go that route. Maybe they can get a deal done for the 5th that allows them to keep their 8th. Two players in the top 10 would be good. There is so many possibilities we can't argue which draft pick would be better to trade for when we don't know the asking price

Greg Fenton

@loomx @Greg Fenton @TheCanucksnaphook He wasn't even considered to go as high as 5th by a lot of people, that wasn't the Leafs taking #5 of a group of 5.

If there are 5 players in the mix for those picks, why let 4 other GM's make your decision for you?

loomx
loomx

@Greg Fenton @loomx @TheCanucksnaphook Because it might cost you Cody Franson instead of Jake Gardiner? This isn't difficult. If the Leafs want Draisaitl or Dal Colle and either is available when the 5th pick comes around, why wouldn't you pay the small price to get the guy you want instead of a worse prospect at 5th?

Greg Fenton
Greg Fenton

@loomx @Greg Fenton @TheCanucksnaphook If you could get the 1st pick, and you are in a place were you feel you need to trade up in the first place, why not go higher and get one of the players you have ranked higher?

ANd if you have thsoe 2 guys ranked 1-2, why risk them being picked in the top 4?

And Franson isn't getting you higher in the4 draft to begin with

loomx

@Greg Fenton @loomx @TheCanucksnaphook That's why I said "an idiot GM holds the 5th pick.

It's all tied to price. I wouldn't want to give up Kadri and Gardiner to move up to 1st. If the Oilers are asking for too much, I wouldn't move there either. You're making it sound as if there's no point trading up if you can't trade up to 3rd. That doesn't make sense.

Greg Fenton
Greg Fenton

@loomx @Greg Fenton @TheCanucksnaphook You also said "pick whowever is left", but now you have them targetting Draisaitl or Dal Colle. Targetting someone and "picking whoever is left" are two different things.

You still aren't getting t he 5th pickf or Franson.

@Greg Fenton @loomx @TheCanucksnaphook And you said "Go big, get 1 or 3 (ideally 1) and take control of your fate. Get the player yo want, not the one 4 teams didn't want. "

As if there's no point in trading up if you can't trade up to 3rd

Greg Fenton
Greg Fenton

@loomx @Greg Fenton @TheCanucksnaphook If have them ranked 1-5, ya I'm not big on trading up to 5 and settling for who the other 4 GM's didn't want, rather then going to for 1 or 3 and having control over the fate of the team.

I also don't think the drop off in price is going to be as great as your making it out to be.
