TORONTO, ON - MAY 16 - Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Dave Nonis talks to media at the end of the Maple Leafs season at the ACC in Toronto on May 16, 2013 Vince Talotta/Toronto Star

Maple Leafs GM, Dave Nonis joined Bob McCown, John Shannon, Doug Maclean, Chris Johnston and Elliotte Friedman on Prime Time Sports to recap the Leafs work on the opening day of NHL free agency.

  • Bon Scott was a Leaf fan

Nice!!  I missed this earlier….listening to it now.  Thx much!!

  • peterbleafs

I stayed away from this place all day…just watched TSN, was good.  I liked the moderate stuff the Leafs did.  Do not regret anyone else where they went, even Brian Boyle as cheap as he was

  • peterbleafs

Lots of decent deals…few over paid.  Washington way overpaid for Orpik…ridiculously so.  Also over paid Niskanen.

  • leafmealone

Too soon to say one way or the other. I am glad that we didn’t sign any Clarkson-level mistakes. Also, we are now one of the few teams with the capspace (AND the ability to actually spend the $) to maybe take advantage of teams needing to shed salary.

  • Xxxxxnew

    Brad Richards is a Hawk.

  • peterbleafs

leafmealone We have a decent chance of finishing low in the standings as well.

  • leafmealone

peterbleafs leafmealone It would be ideal to just play some kids and see what happens. If we do better than expected, then make some moves at the deadline with the extra cap space. Otherwise, sell some pieces and get a mix of picks, prospects (hopefully a young talented C) to help a re-tooling before our core gets too much older.

  • FRyan

So why did we have to throw in jerry d for Matt frattin seems crazy. Could have swamped jerry d for frattin but throwing in a pick. Leafs always get the ass end of things

  • Black_Hawk

    FRyan conditional apparently

  • Black_Hawk

so happy komarov is back, hopefully he helps the room out a lot

  • FRyan

Still another pick regardless how you slice it at this rate we now have no 2nd in 2015 and now a 7th

  • HHT

Nonis is the worst asset manager. FRyan

  • FRyan

It looks like the 2nd rounder that was traded to la kings for bernier was maple leafs option for 2014 or 2015 and they chose 2014

Matt Frattin’s new deal with the Leafs is two years, one-way with an $800,000 cap hit. Very reasonable.

  • FRyan

Don’t understand the Stephen robdias signing

  • FrankFerrant

lukethenuke       I like. He basically takes Raymond’s spot for slightly cheaper. He is less of a bitch than Raymond too which is welcome on this team. I really do think being back on the Leafs will rejuvenate him.

  • FRyan

Dude has broken the same leg twice.

  • djamon

FrankFerrant Less of a bitch, but also less of a player. If this guy gets 45 points I’ll eat my shoe.

  • MaxwellHowe

Happy with Robidas, Frattin and Komarov, conservative moves.  Unhappy Drew Mac is gone.  And there is a gaping hole at C

  • FrankFerrant

FRyan   and yet he continues to play. what a warrior!

  • djamon

FRyan They had to since they lost the a 2nd in the Holland deal.

  • FrankFerrant

djamon FrankFerrant       ok. you do that.  he is still better fit for this team than Mason Raymond

  • djamon

FRyan Different spots…the injuries were unrelated.

  • FrankFerrant

MaxwellHowe Mac signed elsewhere? I honestly want to sign Brodeur on a one-year deal.

  • Lonsmos2

Plus frattin hits like a truck whereby Raymond wouldn’t hit anythingb

  • .JVR.

So, I’ve been sitting poolside and was wondering what the general consensus is on today’s moves.

I like the Robidas signing as he brings some toughness and leadership to the backend and should be able to provide good Top 4 minutes.
I’m glad Frattin is back and think he’ll be rejuvenated with the Leafs, but hated seeing Jerry D go.
Love that Komarov is back, but definitely think he was overpaid.

Wish Bolland didn’t leave, but glad we weren’t the ones to give him $5.25 million on a 5 year deal!

  • gjdevlin

Whew — the Maple Leafs cupboard was practically stripped bare.

Drew Mac is gone and Bolland hauled his ass off to Florida. I think he wanted 8 million to replace the income he could earn in the states – taxes.

The way it is – it’s time for the Leafs to pull up the Marlies – Leivo, Holland, etc and let them play.

And you know what – I think the Leafs should get rid of Carlye and let Steve Spott coach the Leafs this fall – this way the new Marlies can respond to him.

Then again – I probably don’t know what I’m talking about but this is frustrating for us Leaf fans. We know we don’t want over paid bums like Vanek and Statsny.

The way we lost draft picks via Bolland and he walks and that there is no solid sense of what upper management plans to do in terms of strengthening our team is frustrating all of us.

  • Lonsmos2

I think team chemistry will be better and if RC uses four lines we will be fine

  • gjdevlin

    FrankFerrant MaxwellHowe Yeah Carolina…

  • Marlies Man

On Drew Mac, he wasn’t going to be the NHL backup. And Sparks, Gibson and now Bibeau need to play.

  • Ze_theLeafsFan

Frattin seems like someone who needs a kick in the butt before he gets it. We saw that back when he was in the NCAA. Let’s hope that he takes this opportunity and runs with it

  • wiski

gjdevlin Paragraph 5 hit the nail on the head 😉

  • HHT

He doesn’t have a leg to stand on? FRyan

  • wiski

.JVR. time for a dip and see you back is 5

  • .JVR.

    FrankFerrant
Ya, I wouldn’t mind it if Brodeur was signed.  As long as he realizes that he’s the backup to Bernier and is only here to mentor him and play 10-15 games.

  • .JVR.

With Robidas being signed, does this mean Phaneuf moves back to the left side?

    Phaneuf   –   Robidas
    Rielly   –   Polak
    Gardiner   –   Franson/Granberg

  • leafmealone

djamon FrankFerrant Hope it’s made of something tasty. 😉

  • GreekGod

    .JVR.
Nonis mentioned that he wants to give Gardiner and Rielly more opportunity this season. Think hinted at:
    Gardiner – Phaneuf
    Rielly – Robidas
    as the top 4

  • .JVR.

    GreekGod
I can live with that too, but I guess that means Granberg won’t be cracking the team and Franson will be traded (already tried to swap him for Gorges), since Polak will occupy the right side on the third pairing.

Not sure whether Ranger will be brought back or if somebody like MacWiliam will be giving at chance on the third pairing, but at this point I would have much rather of kept Gunnarsson instead of trading him for Polak:

    Gardiner   –  Phaneuf
    Rielly   –   Robidas
    Gunnarsson   –   Franson/Granberg

  • .JVR.

    peterbleafs
I wouldn’t have minded if Boyle was signed as the fourth line centre, but obviously he’d rather play in tax-free Florida.

I’m pissed that Bolland left, but am glad we weren’t the team to give him $5.5 million.  Not so much mad that he’s gone, just mad that we gave up a 2nd round pick at the 2013 draft for him.
