NHL News and NHL Rumours

    So many threads anymore..

  • The_Polish_Cannon

Wow here’s an article on the islanders website about acquiring grabovski and Kulemin. Greg Cronin, who’s now the assistant coach for the team had lots of great things to say about the two.

  • Black_Hawk

The_Polish_Cannon there both good players imo, just overpaid now and Grabo was with the leafs.

  • http://mapleleafshotstove.com/ DeclanK

The_Polish_Cannon Its linked just above in the mashup?

  • conis

The_Polish_Cannon They will probably both have good seasons…and score vs toronto as usual

  • djamon

The_Polish_Cannon What else is he gonna say? “These guys were great in 2010, and we needed to get to the Cap floor so….”

  • Cameron19

The_Polish_Cannon Grabovski is worth it in this new cap era. Kulemin is overpaid by double. And I love Kulemin.

  • The_Polish_Cannon

DeclanK The_Polish_Cannon My bad, I looked through the links to see if it was posted and didn’t see it

  • djamon

Cameron19 Santorelli is a better player than Kulemin at this point. At 1/3 the Cap hit.

  • LeafsGuru

has there been any word yet on Bodie’s contract amount?

  • The_Polish_Cannon

Cameron19 The_Polish_Cannon forsure. I bet there were lots of teams interested in adding them, but Islanders were turned down by lots of UFAs and had to overpay to attract good players.

  • LeafsGuru

CanuckUKinToronto LeafsGuru  weird I’m hoping they didn’t give him a Liewikie raise

  • traNsplantEdneWfie

LeafsGuru Maybe he’s got a “whatever’s left on the cap” deal.

  • LeafsGuru

traNsplantEdneWfie LeafsGuru  that’s about 4 mil oh god no lol

  • Cameron19

djamon Cameron19 We’ll see. Santorelli overachieved last year, in my opinion. He was useless for the Jets. Still excited about his acquisition as he is good depth, but Kulemin is a far better all around player.

  • hoolihan

CanuckUKinToronto LeafsGuru Hope you’re about $200k high.

  • The_Polish_Cannon

djamon Cameron19 yah I agree with the additions, sucks losing good players for nothing but we’ve already beaten that horse to death. I just think it’s interesting that Greg Cronin was so high on these 2 while part of the coaching staff here. There must’ve been a lot of disagreements amongst the carlyle and the assistants

  • dlb Mad

    1.  does anyone think JVR-Bozak-Kessel will be split up to start camp?  i don’t.
    2.  does anyone expect Lupul-Kadri will be split up?  i don’t
    3.  who gets first crack on Kadri’s right wing?  i think Clarkson will get the chance from the start to give as much time as possible to create chemistry
    4.  who gets next crack on Kadri’s right wing?  i think if Clarkson makes it through pre-season there and then the line doesn’t start the year well, it’ll be Frattin because of past chemistry.  if the line doesn’t gel well in pre-season wiht Clarkson then i’ll go out on a limb and say Ashton gets a look there (before Santorelli and Kontiola, yes)
    4.  name 4 players who might make up a 3rd line that Carlyle might turn to for matchups against “Crosby lines”.  i’ll say Komarov, Kontiola, Santoreli and Bodie
    5.  who will get first crack beside Phanuef?  i think Gardiner.  but i think we see better success once Rielly moves there.  i think they’ll work better together and both will excel.  i think Robidas is better suited to play with the roamer.

  • Black_Hawk

Cameron19 djamon kuly is better but not we couldnt afford him at that money. If he was hitting 30 goals and playing great D then for sure but he wasnt here. I wouldnt be surprised if he did though in NYI. Will have a greater offensive role imo.

  • djamon

Cameron19 Far better? That’s irrational Kulemin love there…he’s a zero offense guy, and plays far smaller than his size. This is what smart teams do…not waste money on a 3rd line plug. I’m so glad we let him walk.

  • Black_Hawk

dlb Mad clarkson and kadri guys dont work well for some reason. I think Clarkson is pencilled in on the third line RW for the next 6 years unfortunately. Hopefully he and Holland or santorelli or Kontiola can develop some Chemistry this year (Clarkson-Kontiola-Komarov might be a great 3rd line)

  • Cameron19

dlb Mad So basically you admit that Carlyle will do everything wrong at first and then hopefully figure out the better combinations at some point down the road, lol.

  • djamon

The_Polish_Cannon I’d be surprised if either player had many suitors. Even Malkin couldn’t sway the Pens into paying him anything.

  • Anthony Petrielli

    https://twitter.com/mirtle/status/485084829004746752

  • The_Polish_Cannon

djamon The_Polish_Cannon well it was widely reported that the Pens were trying to sign Kulemin. But when NYI come in with an offer like that there’s no way the Pens will match

  • Cameron19

djamon Cameron19 Like I said, let’s just wait and see how this season goes. Kulemin will likely get far better opportunities with the Islanders and won’t be constantly stuck with McClement against the Crosby’s of the NHL.

  • GreekGod

    @Black_Hawk @dlb Mad
Wouldn’t say they don’t work. Kadri and Clarkson and Lupul had a weird year. If they can all get there shit together then things could work.

  • dlb Mad

    Cameron19
    pardon?

  • Cameron19

djamon The_Polish_Cannon There was talk they were offering 3M for multiple years. I know Winnipeg tried very hard to get Kulemin – or at least, that’s the word around here. I believe they wanted to play together though, and the Islanders lost their minds.

  • djamon

The_Polish_Cannon Before FA even opened he was supposedly going to the Pens, then a day later still no deal. It was only then that the Isles swooped in. He priced himself out of the rational side of the market. Over 4m for a 9 goal guy who plays soft.

  • The_Polish_Cannon

dlb Mad yeah aside from RW on Kadri’s line nothing really needs to be tinkered with in the top 6. Top 6 did their job last year, it was the lack of a bottom 6 that brought the team crashing down at the end of the season

  • MaxwellHowe

If the Leafs go with pure talent:
    JVR Bozak   Kessel
    Lupul   Kadri   Clarkson
    Komarov   Santorelli    Kontiola
    Ashton   Holland   Frattin
But something tells me Orr or McLaren or Devane or Bodie will be slotted in there. i think Broll would be more useful, but still a downgrade in terms of skill.

  • Ze_theLeafsFan

Anthony Petrielli I hope it doesn’t

  • Cameron19

dlb Mad Cameron19 Just trying to get you riled, lol

But you say Clarkson will get to play with Kadri and Lupul, even though it will fail and Frattin will have to move there eventually. I agree, but why would Carlyle make such an obvious mistake?

You say that Gardiner will get top crack at the top pairing with Phaneuf, even though Rielly probably makes more sense based on who complements what skill sets and so forth. Again, I agree, but why doesn’t Carlyle see it that way?

You’re also already preparing for him to bury a bunch of depth signings in the defensive zone playing against elite NHL competition.

  • djamon

Cameron19 Hmmm…I seem to remember Kuli playing a significant number of games with Lupul and Kadri. I think it’s time for people to see this guy for what he is…not what he once was. It’s not like the Isles have no offensive players…he’ll still be a 3rd liner.

  • The_Polish_Cannon

djamon The_Polish_Cannon Well this is all conjecture, you and I have no idea what was happening behind the scenes.

You see it as one team making an offer and Kuli standing his ground asking for too much.
Some might see it as multiple suitors gradually outbidding each other.
and some might see it as Kuli and Grabo were adamant on playing together and holding out for a deal that involved the two.

  • dlb Mad

    MaxwellHowe
i think Bodie and Orr are in the mix, Devane and McLaren behind them.
Orr was a different guy last year, and if he’s no different i think Bodie will be the 13th forward
with Thornton leaving BOS, Parros leaving MTL and Scott leaving BUF … i think the arms race is over in the East

  • dlb Mad

    Ze_theLeafsFan
for the right price, i’d like to consider it
    – hall of fame presence, positive guy, does not accept losing attitude
    – Clarkson’s best friend
    – Bernier’s idol

  • GreekGod

    dlb Mad MaxwellHowe
Komarov was a big reason as to why teams engaged us physically a couple years ago which made it worth to have either Orr or McLaren in the lineup and sometimes even both.

  • djamon

The_Polish_Cannon I agree…all I’m doing is looking at the timing of everything. He was going to the Pens…we all knew that. It was widely reported in the media. Then, 24 hours later still no deal and the Pens are signing Goc and Downie. None of this was conjecture. I have no idea what he asked for, but I think it’s a safe assumption from the timeline that it was too much.

  • dlb Mad

    Cameron19
    damn you lol

  • Cameron19

djamon Cameron19 He would play a period or two with them for a few games at a time, but nothing more.

  • djamon

    dlb Mad No.

  • Sexyhairyman

dlb Mad 1,2,3) i am almost more excited to see the pressason than the regular season, i love seeing players tried in new spots. whether they stick or not its really fun to watch and see. so
    1) yes. i think they have developed chemistry already, and we know how good they are. i think, at the very least, a couple people will get that shot at center, with kadri and kontiola being the front runners. doubt they will stick of course, but from all the high praise of kontiola i am very excited to see him get a shot there in the preseason. not ready, wont start, but i just think its fun.
    2) probably not, unless they try a kessel-kadri-lupul line for fun, but no i dont really think it will happen much. maybe kadri gets a shot on the first.
    3. i think frattin had good chemistry with kadri and see him getting a shot. i also see holland trying to steal a spot, and i really wanna see him play the wing. Kontiola and santorelie will also get a chance.
    4. i agree completely except swap bodie out for ashton/frattin.
    5. gardiner. 100 percent. gets first crack, but i imagine other people will get a shot.

  • djamon

Anthony Petrielli Thank God. There’s no world where Brodeur is a better option at backup than Reimer.

  • Cameron19

djamon Cameron19 Also, I think the Islanders may use him a defensive complement to their top two lines. If I were them, I would look at something like:

    Kulemin – Tavares – Okposo
    Grabner – Grabovski – Nelson
    Bailey – Nielsen – Clutterbuck

  • dlb Mad

    djamon
    hmmm.  it’s a compelling argument…lol

  • BoneChompski

Ze_theLeafsFan Anthony Petrielli Marty is an all time great but his stats are awful and have been trending downhill for a few seasons.  Love to see him as front office guy somewhere at this point in his career.

  • Cameron19

dlb Mad Cameron19 I know, and I get that. The problem with Carlyle is it takes him far too fucking long to figure it out himself.
