Interesting that Ranger has decided to sign in Switzerland. You would think that he would be able to get a contract in the NHL

So now that Ranger has decided to avoid the substance-abusing NHL lifestyle and gone off to live where alcohol is much more prevalent in pretty much everything, where are we with LD depth?

And for the record.  I cannot stand Gus Katsaros.

That is how you start the morning off boys.

Good Morning Gents....as always, rain or shine, great day for a trade  :)

Paul Ranger was actually one of the guys I found SMART enough to play D for our team.

There goes that requirement.

Morning Folks, so Ranger signed with Switzerland?

One thing I can say about the Leafs and their prospects...They really target guys who can put the puck in the net.

On the parent team you have Kessel, JVR, Lupul, Kadri, Bozak...even with Frattin and Leivo, those two have goal scorers pedigree. In their system they have Conner Brown and recent pick William Nylander.

Not sure any team in the league has as many guys with hands around the net like we have.

We really just need some of our big bodied guys, and defensive specialists to really step up their game to be NHL calibre. Would love it if we could speed track Gauthier, Carrick, Biggs, and Broll a couple years. Wow could we ever use a big year from those guys.

So The Red Wings are still looking for a Dman, preferably right handed, and have thus lost interest in MDZ.  I still hope the Leafs could trade them Cody for a young forward prospect or draft pick, and then sign MDZ for a reasonable 1 year contract.  Go:

Phaneuf Gardiner

Robidas Rielly

Polak MDZ

Granberg and Percy as the spares.

Did you guys know that Conner Brown is ranked 50th in the top 50 prospects on Hockeysfuture.com.  That is a pretty good ranking for that late of a pick.

@Loric76 I would far rather live is a place like Geneva that some of those shit holes south of the border.

I like Katsaros' analyses, but this tweet is very hard to read.

@TheGroobster Wish him well, it was a worthwhile experiment and if it resolves whatever it was that caused him to leave, good on him.

@wendelsway1 Every day is a good day for a Franson trade :) just gotta find out which day

@TheCanucksnaphook

that's the beauty of the Marlies ain't it?  it's a little surprising how little we hear about them, as close as they are.

it's a great thing.

@TheCanucksnaphook I loved him during the end. I'd love to see him again this year and see if he plays to his true potential.

I predict he will find his way back to the NHL

@MaxwellHowe

i swear, if Franson goes to DET it's got to cost them.  i love repeating myself so here it is again.

Franson could be a pilon for 55 minutes, but his shot is a weapon that will eventually find its mark.  and against his former club, we know it will be our doom.

i want 2 of the following from them in return:

- 2nd round pick

- Pulkkinen

- Jurco

or one of:

- 1st round pick

- Riley Sheahan

off the top of my head.  i'm not sure who their prospects are otherwise.

@B_Leaf

they note he could improve his defensive game.

that's true.  but his game doesn't suffer from it.

the added strength, and having a slightly different role will enable him to be better defensively.  he reads the play well, so if he's asked to be the defensive conscience on the line he will be good defensively.  if he's asked to cheat a little so the others use him as the outlet, then he'll appear to be not entirely committed to the defensive aspects of the game.

that's hockey.  he's capable.

@B_Leaf If he was 20 lbs heavier he would be in the top 10.  Problem is, no one knows how a "small" guy will translate to the pro's.

MaxwellHowe

Not sure why he is so low.  Won the OHl scoring race, tho its not like he used a big mature body to muscle his way to goals.  Fared just as well without McDavid.  By all accounts has great hockey IQ and a fantastic work ethic.  We should always be cautious not to overhype, but I'm not quite sure what else Connor Brown could do at this point?  Should he have won the scoring race by 50 points?

dlb Mad
dlb Mad

@leafdreamer

sure he will.  he just won't be the same as a pro at 21 years of age.

two years on the Marlies and then we'll talk about him again.

judge him after you see what he can do there.

@peterbleafs @mcloki Good luck Paul Ranger. I wish you all the best. I think he just saw to writing on the wall and went to Europe.

MaxwellHowe

He does not strike me as one of those pampered offensive "superstars' who have to come thru the ranks believing they are a gift from God and need not alter their style of play or concern themselves with D.  Like a Yakupov for instance.  He seems to be willing to do whatever it takes

@MaxwellHowe

Being in the top 50 ranking is very complimentary. He is the only Leaf in that ranking. Of course Morgan Rielly has graduated. But Brown is ahaed of Leivo according to that...not necessarily the case but interesting to think about.

dlb Mad

@TheCanucksnaphook

i heard the same things said of Kadri.  my reply to that is, "if the kid's got character then anyone who was able to dominate his peers at 18/19 will be able to dominate them again at 25"

we're not going to get the bonus years you get from the special players like Crosby or MacKinnon.  but that doesn't mean they can't still be all-stars.

remember Tavares would be too slow?  lol, mindless.

dlb Mad
dlb Mad

@MaxwellHowe

you're right.  he's not.

i'd put more money on him being a future NHL captain than i would on Leivo scoring 25 goals in the NHL.  and i think Leivo will score 30.

dlb Mad
dlb Mad

@B_Leaf

putting Brown ahead of Leivo is not rediculous to me, but it is curious.  Leivo not being on that list is rediculous.

interesting that Trouba is on that list that Rielly cannot be on.  the cut off must be 66 NHL games :-)

MaxwellHowe
MaxwellHowe

Its not like I think he'll make the Leafs in the next 2 years, but he certainly has been advancing on a ridiculous trajectory.  Add some weight, improve skating.  IMO, he will get there eventually.

peterbleafs
peterbleafs

@dlb Mad @TheCanucksnaphook Just a ton of players in the NHL are 5'9" to 6'0" and around 180lbs...and all do just fine.  Just look down through rosters every team has a number of them, even playing defense.....example....Torrey Krug Boston Bruins, Defense.....5'9" tall, 181 lbs.
  David Kreijci who many here want as our number one Center....5'11" and 171 lbs.

TheCanucksnaphook
TheCanucksnaphook

@dlb Mad @TheCanucksnaphook Oh i hear it about Kadri, Nylander etc etc.  Usually they are only too small when they are Leafs players.

Guys like Kariya, Selanne, St. Louis, etc only do well for other teams apparently.  But Fuck Gilmour right?

dlb Mad
dlb Mad

@traNsplantEdneWfie

ok, then how about Ehlers this year instead.

hey, i understand why people aren't sure of Brown.  i get that.

but it's more to do with being a late pick right now than where he's at as a player now.  picked that late makes us assume there is something wrong with him, and skating and size are the two things that come up most often.

a solid rookie year on the Marlies will hopefully make everyone feel better about him.  40 points and handling the size and speed good enough?

B_Leaf
B_Leaf

@dlb Mad @B_Leaf

Yeah, Trouba missed some games to injury...thats all. What a player he is though.

Leivo should probably be on the list ahead of Brown, but like you said it is curious...definitely is giving Brown the head nod and slow clap

@MaxwellHowe I think if he starts putting up numbers in the AHL next season he could get a look real quick.

CanuckUKinToronto
CanuckUKinToronto

@MaxwellHowe That is the key compared to other OHL scoring leaders who were never going to make it in the NHL... Connor Brown has been advancing as you say on a "ridiculous trajectory".

@leafdreamer

if we're talking a trade for a top 3 pick next year then there might not be anyone in our organization we'd hold back from that trade.  some generationals next year isn't there?
