The Maple Leafs have signed 2014 eighth overall draft pick William Nylander to a three-year entry level deal.

This of course is standard business and changes nothing as far as the options available to the Leafs and Nylander this Fall, of which there are three: back to MoDo in the SHL, down to the Marlies, or even Mississauga of the OHL, although the latter-most seems unlikely.

According to Article 9.1(d)(i) of the CBA, if Nylander plays less than 10 games for the Leafs this year — regardless of where (including the Marlies or the SHL) — his contract will slide because he’s in year 1 of his Standard Player Contract.

welcome to the Leafs Nation !!

  • Cameron19

Aren’t there 4 slide rule contracts? Gauthier, Verhaeghe, Valiev, and Nylander? If Nylander goes to Sweden, does that count against our contracts, or does it slide?

  • TheCanucksnaphook

Cameron19 Good question.  Where is our in-house legal counsel?

  • TML__fan

Assuming he’s not quite ready to make the jump to the NHL, then who makes the final decision as to whether he plays with MoDo or the Marlies?  I’d assume it is a collective decision, but who makes the final say?  Wouldn’t the Marlies make more sense, as in he’ll learn the Leafs’ systems and then be available as a possible call-up if someone gets injured on the big club?

  • TheCanucksnaphook

TML__fan Final say is going to end up with Nonis/Shanny/Carlyle.

  • Cameron19

TML__fan Burns a year of the contract, whereas I think if he goes over to Sweden he would still have 3 ELC years starting next season.

  • TheCanucksnaphook

Cameron19 TML__fan I could give a shit about that year of ELC.  If he can play, he can play.

  • Burtonboy

TML__fan I agree Don . Plus it would Be nice for him to play the smaller ice surface

  • KurtWhite

I know it seems like a backwards step but if not the marlies Id like to see him in the O…could really see how he compares to others his age…playing with men is great and all over in sweeden but Id like to see his skillset against guys his own age…rather hear about how hes on pace for 100 points rather then 12 (ya but against men) in the SEL

  • TheCanucksnaphook

KurtWhite No to the OHL.   Sweden or Leafs.

  • KurtWhite

TheCanucksnaphook KurtWhite  leafs wont happen and Sweden is so boring

  • TML__fan

Burtonboy Another definite plus.  Not to mention it would be easier to monitor and develop his game while here in the Toronto area.

https://twitter.com/burtonboy12 yes indeed it does, see Article 9.1(d)(i)

  • Cameron19

TheCanucksnaphook Cameron19 TML__fan Why waste a year when we won’t be competitive anyways?

  • StanSmith

Makes the most sense to me to have him play big minutes in the Marlies. He gets used to the North American game and the smaller rinks, plus the AHL is there specifically to develop players for the NHL.  If he goes back to Sweden there are no guarantees how much ice time he will get.  I think playing junior might be a step backwards and the only way I see him making the leafs is if he really impresses at camp and starts the season as a second line winger.

  • Burtonboy

Cameron19 TheCanucksnaphook TML__fan Man if your so certain of that then you should wager all the money you have on them missing the playoffs. #gotthenerve

  • KurtWhite

StanSmith  think he will be top line on the marlies?

  • Komas Taberle

    Jmessih
    He sleeps in there

  • Burtonboy

So is this now today’s mashup ?

  • Alec Brownscombe

Just a news article, feel free

  • Burtonboy

    Alec Brownscombe ok

  • Cameron19

Burtonboy Cameron19 TheCanucksnaphook TML__fan I would gladly make a wager, but I don’t consider making the playoffs being competitive. If we make it, it will be as a bubble team; not a serious threat of any kind.

  • TheCanucksnaphook

KurtWhite StanSmith He sure fuckin better be.

  • Burtonboy

Cameron19 Burtonboy TheCanucksnaphook TML__fan I think we have a better team then many think. Probably not a cup contender yet. Everyone is pretty much blinded by all the BS we saw last yr and I don’t think its indicative of what this group is capable of. This whole season hinges on Carlyle and that coaching staff doing the right things.

  • Jmessih

Burtonboy Alec Brownscombe I was going to ask as well, but I didn’t see the “for general topics and mashup convo go to this thread” thing at the bottom of the article. I assume it is fair to assume without that comments are fair game (off topic, but appropriate)?

  • Walter_White

I really don’t think there’s a bad option for Nylander. If it’s the Leafs it means he earned it and gets to hone his trade with sheltered minutes and likely on the 2nd PP unit, if it’s Sweden he gets to develop while playing against men in a comfortable environment for him, if it’s the Marlies he’ll get big minutes in all situations while learning the NA ice, and if it’s the OHL (least likely) he’ll get a chance to dominate at his own age level. There are distinct positives with each option.

  • Cameron19

Burtonboy Cameron19 TheCanucksnaphook TML__fan Which is almost a slam dunk to be a nightmare.

  • TheCanucksnaphook

Walter_White Id love to see him win the Calder this year.  Wide open.

  • Burtonboy

Cameron19 Burtonboy TheCanucksnaphook TML__fan I don’t think so. Any repeat of that nonsense in the 1st 10-15 games I think Shanny pulls the plug on Carlyle

  • Walter_White

TheCanucksnaphook I think if I was making the call I’d say Leafs for 9 games, then Marlies and World Juniors.

  • Cameron19

Burtonboy Cameron19 TheCanucksnaphook TML__fan 10-15 games is all it takes to sink a season.

  • loomx

    TheCanucksnaphook Walter_White I’d say it’s Drouin’s to lose.

  • TheCanucksnaphook

loomx TheCanucksnaphook Walter_White Then we shall take it from him.

  • Burtonboy

Cameron19 Burtonboy TheCanucksnaphook TML__fan Flyers turned it around after a horrendous start last yr . Why not the Leafs ?

  • Cameron19

    Burtonboy Cameron19 TheCanucksnaphook TML__fan They have/had a better team.

  • TheCanucksnaphook

Burtonboy Cameron19 See, Elliot always knows.

  • 4evrblue

    Jmessih  hahaha!! Fuckin love Gary!!

  • peterbleafs

The Hockey News has the Leafs ranked 29th of 30 teams.  Not that inspiring

  • TheCanucksnaphook

    peterbleafs Love it !!

  • 4evrblue

peterbleafs  Thats a great sign because they don’t have a fuckin clue what they’re talking about ever :)

  • jimmyg65

@peterbleafs The Hockey New ranked PK Subban the 14th best player in the league, even though he wasn’t good enough to crack the starting six D-men for the Canadian Olympic team six months ago. Kessel is ranked about 15 spots behind Marian Hossa. The magazine is a joke. They never say anything positive about the Leafs because it sells magazines.

ESPN has Nylander ranked 4th amongst all prospects, BTW.

  • 4evrblue

Not getting updates and my comments are disappearing. C’mon livefyre!! You can do better than this!!

  • Cameron19

peterbleafs I’d like to know where they had Detroit ranked 2 years ago.

  • TheCanucksnaphook

    jimmyg65 Go ESPN !!

  • jimmyg65

TheCanucksnaphook jimmyg65 I’m thinking the truth is somewhere in the middle…

  • Burtonboy

Cameron19 Burtonboy TheCanucksnaphook TML__fan I don’t think they do not for one minute . I don’t think the Rangers are that much better either and they made it all the way to the final after a shitty start as well

  • TheCanucksnaphook

4evrblue Its all of the posts…it cannot keep up this pace !

  • TheCanucksnaphook

jimmyg65 TheCanucksnaphook Of course it is.
