From the Puck daddy article on 10 most fascinating players to watch:
    9. http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/3342/, http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/car/
He’s already been http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/07/26/4031698/canes-new-coach-low-key-but-ready.html after coming off his worst offensive season.
Watching how Staal reacts to that will be fascinating enough, but so is seeing how the franchise reacts to Staal. Talk continues that he’s been shopped, with two more years at $8.25 million against the cap. Thing is, this season and next see Staal due $18.75 million in base salary. That’s a lot of scratch for most teams.
If only there was some franchise, perhaps co-owned by two major media companies, that needed a No. 1 center and had a seemingly bottomless pit of revenue from which to draw …
Its an interesting thought… is Eric Staal in decline OR is this a unique opportunity for the Leafs to get a legit #1 C, who had an off year,  while his stock is currently low.  Be tough to make it work under the cap though.  Not to mention a NTC.

MaxwellHowe I was saying this earlier in the off-season – if the Canes decide to go younger, there might be a deal to be made for Eric Staal.

  • MaxwellHowe

    sure you were
No, this has been bandied about before, and I can imagine your opinion.
So you think its worth a gamble, that there is a good chance Staal just had an off year? (depending on the terms of a trade)
But, alas, with the NTC, this might be a moot discussion.

Hmm a Leafs AGM is on the radio and isn’t spouting an endless steam of embarrassing nonsense. What a brave new world

  • Greg Fenton

Its been brought up before, but do people think its worth it making a play for Ryan Johansen?

Before the Franson and Reimer proposals get thrown out, lets take a quick look at the situation. From what I can find it, it looks like both sides have agreed on a two year deal (Johansen also suggested a 4 year deal, the Jackets a 3 year deal), but they are reportedly 3 million, per season, apart in salary. I can’t find any reports with actual numbers but I think its safe to say Johansen wants a least 5 – 6 million a season, maybe more since I don’t see the Blue Jackets offered him less then 2 million a year after a 30 goal season.

The Blue jackets have the space to match any offer sheet, and given the Leafs cap situation, they can’t really offer one and would have to send salary back. I also find it unlikely the Blue Jackets would want nothing but futures or supportign players for their best player the year after making the playoffs. In a nutshell, to get this 22 year old, 33 goal scoring center who wants 5-6 (maybe more million) per year from a team that won’t want to take a step backwards, it would take 1-2 core pieces off the Leafs (and I doubt Lupul could be the center piece).

If it would be possible, would Johansen be a player worth making that kind of change to get?

  • Cameron19

MaxwellHowe Problem is two fold: He has to want to come here, and he has to not suck like he did last year. Plus, using assets on a 30 year old only further commits us to our core. Conversely, if you’re targeting players 22-25, you’re giving yourself a little more in the way of options.

Also, presumably salaries players would have to be going the other way to make this work, and in my opinion it is unlikely that Bozak or Lupul would waive for Carolina – and they would be your prime candidates.

  • Axle_Goalie

    Greg Fenton You suggesting Kadri?

  • MaxwellHowe

Obviously that you would like the Leafs to obtain Staal.  Nothing negative intended.

  • MaxwellHowe

Yeah, it would depend on the assets going the other way, no doubt.  And it would not necessarily be the case that Bozak and/or Lupul would have to be traded to Carolina; they might be traded elsewhere to open the cap space.  Thing is, as the article notes, given the amount of money Stall is due in the next two years, Carolina might trade him for less than market value.

  • Cameron19

Greg Fenton I saw it reported, I can’t remember where to say how reliable it was, that he was asking for 7M per for 2 years.

  • Greg Fenton

Axle_Goalie Greg Fenton No, simply because I dunno how low the Blue Jackets would utlimately be willing to sell.

I’m suggesting the common suggestion of “Franson and Reimer” wouldn’t even be close, nor would Lupul and Bozak (because of age and talent level). I think the Blue Jackets starting asking price for their top forward would be one our top 2 forwards, since ultimately they don’t HAVE to move him. I dunno how much lower then that they are willing to go and/or what kind of package they are willing to take. To themw ould Kadri, Gardiner and apick (for example) = their top player, or would they hold out for another top player or just hold onto the one they have?  If you’re the Leafs, you obviously try to get him for the least amount you have to pay, but I still think the least you have to pay a lot, and a core/team changing swap. For various reasons, I don’t think its possible to just drop Johansen onto the team we have.

  • Cameron19

MaxwellHowe Yes, for sure, I wasn’t discounting the possibility of it happening, just noting it as an obstacle. Lupul has to say 14 teams he’ll go to, and Bozak has to say some number also (I believe it’s unknown though). It’s just one more step. But this is kind of why I want a mini-fire-sale at the deadline with the likes of Bozak, Franson, Lupul and Reimer gone. If you can clean up on those pieces, and maybe a couple of the mercenaries we brought in, too, then you have the assets to make plays fora  couple of upgrades next summer. Perhaps you bring in Eric Staal and Evander Kane, plus Nylander joins the team.

    J.V.R. – E.Staal – Kessel
    Kane – Kadri – Nylander

Is a big, big upgrade on:

    J.V.R. – Bozak – Kessel
    Lupul – Kadri – Booth/Frattin

  • Greg Fenton

Cameron19 MaxwellHowe 1) While I agree they shouldn’t be committing to this core, they pretty much ARE committed to it. I’m pretty sure that train has left the station. 2) I know I brought up Johansen above, but lets be honest thats very unlikely to happen because of the cost involved. What Eric Staal level 22-25 year is available? And available for what they could potentially get Staal for?

Bozakand Lupul might be who the Leafs WANT to give up, but that doesn’t mean its who the Canes would take.

  • MaxwellHowe

Absolutely agree.  I dearly hope the Leafs either contend or completely flop and purge the lineup.  It never seems to work out that way tho.

  • Greg Fenton

MaxwellHowe I thought there’d be a “trade Kessel for him” in there, which would be silly in this case

  • MaxwellHowe

Thats sort of my way of thinking.  If the Leafs want to commit to this core, then make a commitment and look seriously at a guy like Staal.  If there is no commitment, then trade some assets while they have value and move on.

  • Cameron19

Greg Fenton Cameron19 MaxwellHowe Right, but you don’t want to talk about more age appropriate players who might be available. I believe that Evander Kane and Ryan O’Reilly will be traded within the next 12-16 months, and those guys are in an age range where they significantly improve the supporting cast around Kessel and Kadri, but also allow you to move on from Kessel if that’s still not enough.

  • MaxwellHowe

No that wouldn’t make sense in the circumstances.

  • http://mapleleafshotstove.com/ DeclanK

Cameron19 MaxwellHowe I think you’re looking at a Captain swap, more than anything. I’d think long and hard about it, too.

  • Cameron19

DeclanK Cameron19 MaxwellHowe For Staal? I think they’d be looking to go young. If they move on from Staal early enough in this season, they could easily be talking about landing McDavid. They’re clearly the worst team in their division, and without Staal, probably the worst in the Conference. I don’t think they’d be looking for a 29 year old top pairing defender.

  • MaxwellHowe

I just don’t see how the Leafs could get by without Phaneuf.  Gardiner and Rielly would have to improve very very dramatically very very quickly

  • Cameron19

Greg Fenton Axle_Goalie Kadri + Gardiner would be over-payment. Johansen is too unproven for that kind of a deal. Kadri put up similar numbers (actually better) the year before. I’d move Kadri for him in a package, but not one that includes another known, quality asset like Gardiner.

  • http://mapleleafshotstove.com/ DeclanK

MaxwellHowe One of Bozak, Reimer and / or Franson to Jets for Bogo.

  • Cameron19

DeclanK MaxwellHowe Well, that looks after replacing Phaneuf for 30 games per season at least.

  • Greg Fenton

MaxwellHowe I think its absolutely worth the gamble. How often do players with this talent level  become available? Sure he is coming off a “poor” season, but if he wasn’t he probably isn’t available at all.

He ist he right age for this core group, addresses 2 huge needs, his skill set fits etc…. I think the biggest stumbling block would be the canes IF they don’t want futures back. If they want players to “remind competitive” back, that will be a problem.

His NTC may be an issue, but if he comes here he would be playing with Kessel, van Riemsdyk, Lupul, Phaneuf etc…. in his home town. Might not be that much of an issue. The bigger problem would be clearing hte 8.25 million. Even the Leafs send 2 million in money to the Marlies, thats still 5.89 million to clear.

Maybe something like – Gardiner (4.05), Kadri (2.9), + 2015 1st rounder. That means the Leafs would only be over the cap (without sending any other forward to the marlies)  by 0.94 million. The Canes get a couple players just coming into their primes, but not signifcant enoughto screw up their draft position, and an additional 1st round pick. The Leafs top 6 forwards look something like:

van Riemsyk – Staal – Kessel
    Frattin – Bozak – Lupul

It does leave them depending on a young D-man HAVING to make the team but…….

  • http://mapleleafshotstove.com/ DeclanK

Cameron19 DeclanK MaxwellHowe LOL! You wonder if the injury problems will ever leave that guy.

  • Greg Fenton

Cameron19 Greg Fenton MaxwellHowe neither of htose guys are the kind of player Staal is, neither addresses their needs like Staal does.

  • Cameron19

DeclanK Cameron19 MaxwellHowe When you see him in person you can tell his workouts are all about bulk. It’s no wonder he’s constantly hurting himself. He’s a monster, but I think you want to be more lean nowadays.

  • Greg Fenton

Cameron19 Greg Fenton Axle_Goalie thats the question – do you basically blow up what they have to go in a different direction? He is looking like a great young player, but its a big change.

And kadri and gardiner aren’t the Leafs top forwards.

  • Cameron19

Greg Fenton Cameron19 MaxwellHowe In your opinion. I would expect O’Reilly and Staal to put up the same kind of numbers between J.V.R. and Kessel, but I would expect O’Reilly to be more helpful defensively.

  • MaxwellHowe

any two of them for Bogo. F it, all 3

  • Greg Fenton

Cameron19 Greg Fenton MaxwellHowe Your opinion is wrong.

  • Cameron19

MaxwellHowe You don’t want the guy Max, trust me.
