Listen to the Robidas interview . It give you a better idea of just where he’s at with this recovery. Sounds like he’s pretty much on schedule to me

  • Burtonboy

He will also be doing another interview on Leafs Lunch as well . Not sure of the time

  • Loric76

Mcost61 Reilly really needs to accidentally-on-purpose backhand punch Maxipad in the face while sitting there.

Do shots against inflate a goalies save percentage? More like – do shots against deflate a goalies save percentage.

  • MaxwellHowe

Regarding the save percentage article, which concludes
” For the forty active goaltenders to play at least one hundred NHL games over the past four seasons, there is no substantial relationship in them playing better -in terms of save percentage- when facing more or less shots against.”
This seems obvious.  Intuitively, I would assume more shots hurts the save percentage, since goalies do get tired like anyone else and lose mental focus as well.

  • Cameron19

MaxwellHowe That goes against popular and traditional wisdom though. Broadcasters have long been touting the sentiment that goalies tend to play better when they get peppered early on and get their head in the game. Clearly there’s a threshold though.

  • Mcost61

MaxwellHowe  I remember Luongo in Florida was at his best when facing more shots, sometimes when a goalie gets less shots he gets careless when he finally sees action after a prolonged lull. What I am saying is , it depends fully on goalie and his situation

  • Luke_R

Optimustic I think so, but over long run, I think its a good stat…. but GAA is more accurate and powerful for measuring a goalie i believe

  • Luke_R

    MaxwellHowe GAA is better

  • Cameron19

Luke_R MaxwellHowe GAA is a team stat.

  • MaxwellHowe

Fair to say that, for the Leafs, that threshold is a dot in the rearview mirror.

  • Mind Bomb

    Mcost61 Elbow HIm Rielly !!!!!

  • Luke_R

Cameron19 Luke_R MaxwellHowe It is flawed when evaluating Leaf netminders

  • Cameron19

Luke_R Cameron19 MaxwellHowe It’s flawed when evaluating any goalie. Look at the average shots against per game – or even just think about who the stingiest defenses are. Those are the goalies with the top 10 GAA without exception. Even just look at Bernier from year to year coming from LA to TOR. He allowed almost an extra goal per game playing here, while also playing much better than he ever had before.

  • Optimustic

I agree with Cam, GAA is a team stat. To a degree save % is also affected by the team play- ie. if the d-men alow the goalie to see more shots and help clear rebounds the goalie stands a better chance at saving more of the shots.  Two years ago we talked about keeping shots to the outside helping Reimer while this year the opposition seemed to have much more access to the slot.

  • Loric76

It’s not one or the other guys…if GAA is a team stat then so is SV%.  Both are impacted by teamplay and systems.

  • Cameron19

Optimustic Ha, I think in hindsight we know that those who tried to argue that the outside shots helped Reimer were arguing nonsense. Carlyle’s system doesn’t actually keep shots to the outside – it just seems that way some nights because of the sheer volume of shots. But most nights, teams had just as many or more in tight chances as they would against anyone else, plus all the perimeter attempts.

  • Luke_R

Cameron19 Luke_R MaxwellHowe If I am evaluating who is better between Reimer or Bernier, which is pretty much the purpose of this i assume, because they are both quality… Sv% is out the window and pretty useless because I want to know the big picture on who is gonna win me more games.  In the same scenario, Reimer and Bernier are gonna take similar shots against, but when does that stat actually matter? I want to know if the goalie is having an impact on the team and lowering goals scored on us.  Big picture thinking vs microanalyzing.

  • Loric76

ingy56 still better than what the Reading Royals wore for Christmas a few seasons back

  • Optimustic

There were some games that we did a good job at limiting the quality chances.  There were also some that we had legiitament reason to be concerned with their play. Last year there was almost always a reason tp be concerned.

  • Luke_R

Cameron19 Optimustic look at the shot location charts from last year, we definitey kept shots away from the house.  In fact, most nights we had more shots from inside the house vs shots against from same spot.

  • Armchair GM

Yan28 Alec Brownscombe sniperstar After Fletcher acquired him in the Gilmour trade didn’t he reject the Leafs offer to re-sign or something to that effect?

  • Cameron19

Luke_R Cameron19 MaxwellHowe The original premise was likely intended to discredit both our goalies, claiming their SV% are only so high because of shot volume. It has nothing to do with comparing Reimer and Bernier, but even within that context, GAA is still pretty useless. Reimer had the worse GAA and the better win percentage until sometime in January when the team went on a prolonged winning streak and Reimer was mostly sitting. Also, GAA only really went south for Reimer after he was concussed in LA. He also rarely got to play through bad starts, as Bernier did, which further inflated his GAA.

  • Cameron19

Luke_R Cameron19 Optimustic That was why they started posting the charts initially – to try and prove shots were being kept out of home plate. The result was that it actually proved we weren’t doing that at all. We would occasionally have games where that happened, but most nights, looking at that chart was an embarrassment.
