After playing a wild game with the Rangers last night, tonight’s game, the makeup for the postponement from the 22nd, was another exciting and goal-filled affair.

Unlike that game, though, the Leafs didn’t have a major lull, as even as they fell behind three times in the first twenty-five minutes, the chances stayed pretty much even, and Toronto went into the final period even in chances and ahead on the scoreboard. While Ottawa did have the better of the third, as they chased the Leaf lead, James Reimer again stood strong to secure back-to-back wins for Toronto.

You can see that Ottawa did generate some good pressure in the third, but the Leafs were able to generate offense in that final period as well, including the insurance goal from Clarkson.

It’s funny that, on a night where Phil Kessel and Tyler Bozak didn’t get a point between them, they were actually more effective in chances than usual, driving play well and generating offensive opportunities. Perhaps more importantly, they were not beaten out on the defensive end.

One of the keys to the Leafs‘ last couple of wins has been the presence of secondary scoring. Tonight it was Josh Levio, who played only six minutes, was even, and scored a key goal. Peter Holland and Mike Santorelli didn’t  generate much at ES but also chipped in with a goal apiece. The Kadri line wasn’t all that effective, and for the Leafs to score five goals without either of the top two lines generating a lot of it points is a positive development. Trevor Smith was even at ES close in his season debut.

Cody Franson had an excellent game, with a team best number in chances. Dion Phaneuf also did well, and that pairing really helped the Leafs drive play. Gardiner and Robidas both got relatively harder zone starts than last night, and both had tough games. In particular, Gardiner was on for a lot of chances as the Leafs defended the lead in the third. Polak, who had decent ES Close numbers, was a -6 in the last twenty minutes.

Trevor Smith, who finished last year at 43% , comes in at 50% at ES close in his first game. Jake Gardiner has been solid at ES overall, but struggled at ES close, which has seen him drift down this table. Franson moved ahead of Rielly on the defence after a great game.
