After losing out in their last game against Boston, Toronto came out strong last night, dominating the first ten minutes and getting a goal for their work.

The game was even in chances after the first period, as Boston did well in the second half of the frame, although the Bruins still trailed. However, the Leafs broke it open in the first half of the second period, dominating play and scoring four goals in the ten minute stretch. They ended up taking the period 9-4 in ES chances. While Boston pulled the chance gap back in the third, it didn’t matter by that point, as the game was well in hand.

That second period was really excellent for Toronto, after that close first period. Boston were able to get closer in the ES margin in the third, but that was expected, given the score effects.

The top line was excellent, with Kessel scoring two vintage snap shot goals, while van Riemsdyk and Bozak both finished with three points each. The line did see their numbers even out somewhat at ES overall, as they had a couple of rough shifts late in the third, but it was still a great game. The Kadri line was quiet but effective. The blowout score allowed some of the depth forwards to get some good minutes, with Holland and Komarov doing well in the back half of the game, continuing a solid run from the Leafs third and fourth lines.

Cody Franson had a second straight excellent game, finishing +5 at ES Close to lead the team. Dion Phaneuf was also good, as those two were the only defencemen above even. Robidas wasn’t great until the game was out of reach, and Roman Polak had a huge 26 minutes in ice time, his most in a 60 minutes game this year.

Cody Franson’s strong run continues and sees him move up this table. Van Riemsdyk got back ahead of Holland and Santorelli at ES Close, although he didn’t see his ES overall numbers improve.
