Toronto fell behind early again, but unlike their opener they weren’t able to get back in the game.

The Leafs gave up an early power play goal, and lost their way at the start of the second, falling behind by four. The final period was pretty painful, as Detroit were able to ease home to a shutout victory.

Corsi was relatively close in this game, but you can see the gap between the teams in chances, where the Red Wings won every period, and in zone entries, with the Leafs crushed. After winning the neutral zone against Montreal, the Leafs were crushed by Detroit. Not only did the Wings win the zone, they had a much higher percentage of controlled entries, while the Leafs struggled to enter the Wings’ zone with control.

The period of the game that counted as close was just the first nine minutes, until the second Detroit goal. The Leafs were somewhat unlucky to go out of the first period behind by two, as the chances were nearly even, but they were out-chanced 4-1 – including two goals – in the first half of the second frame, which sealed their defeat.

After having a good opening game, it was a tough night for Nazem Kadri and Brad Boyes, who were used a lot in the defensive zone, and went against the Abdelkader line often. They were badly out-chanced, with Kadri the worst player in terms of ES chances on the team. Kadri and Boyes were able to win the neutral zone, but struggled to prevent controlled Detroit entries, which helped lead to their chance struggles.

Peter Holland had a much improved game, as he was one of the best Leafs in the neutral zone, and had a great chance ratio as well.

The best Leaf was Leo Komarov, who didn’t get a single offensive zone start, but also wasn’t on for a single Detroit chance against.

Shawn Matthias had another tough game, and has been the worst Leaf in zone entries over the first two games at under 40%.

P.A. Parenteau and Nick Spaling were used defensively, but weren’t able to prevent the Wings from entering the zone; only Boyes was worse than that pairing in duo controlled entries.

Tyler Bozak, freed from the difficult matchup of the first game, had a positive chance night but lost the natural zone badly, along with Joffrey Lupul.

Scott Harrington and Jake Gardiner had the best chance numbers on the defence, and didn’t get particularly soft minutes, with decent zone starts and getting time against all of Detroit’s lines.

The defensive pairing of Matt Hunwick and Dion Phaneuf had the worst zone starts, and were beaten out in the neutral zone, particularly by the top Detroit line.

Martin Marincin and Morgan Rielly were the most effective pairing at winning the neutral zone, but didn’t turn it into many chances, and finished with the worst chance numbers on the back end.
