It looked like the Maple Leafs might manage to make it through regulation in this second half of a road back-to-back, but a poor third period ultimately sunk Toronto.

After a quiet opening frame, the two teams were level in the second period, and the game looked up for grabs going into the final twenty minutes. However, the Leafs struggled in that period, with Boston carrying the play and dominating the chances. The two teams finished pretty much level in zone entries, but there was a big difference in the third in this metric as well. Boston dominated the controlled entries in the final period, while Toronto entered the Bruins’ zone with control barely a quarter of the time.

Toronto faded badly in the second period, perhaps as a result of playing a back-to-back after a fairly long trip. The last five chances of the game, including the Chara goal, were all by Boston, and the Leafs managed only one chance in the last ten minutes of the game.

There were four pretty clear line match-ups in this game, and only one saw the Leafs get the chance advantage. That line was the Peter Holland, Michael Grabner and Brad Boyes unit, which was also able to dominate the neutral zone against the Talbot line.

The top two lines were not as effective. Nazem Kadri’s trio went against the Bergeron and Marchand line, and all finished below even in chances, while Tyler Bozak’s line gave up more chances than any other line, with the Krejci line having a lot of success against them. The third line struggled to generate any controlled entries, and had poor possession numbers in their match-up.

Jake Gardiner led the Leafs in ES ice time, and was on for more Leaf chances than any other player, but also had terrible defensive numbers, on for 13 of 18 Boston ES chances. He managed to finish well behind his partner Dion Phaneuf in that metric, despite playing only limited time without him.

Morgan Rielly and Matt Hunwick were also out-chanced, but weren’t on for nearly as many chances. Roman Polak was the only Leaf defenceman to finish in the positive, rotating through some partners after playing with Scott Harrington for a while.
