The Toronto Marlies signed 25-year-old defenseman Daniel Maggio to an AHL contract on Monday.
Maggio becomes the 15th player signed by the Maple Leafs affiliate to an AHL-only deal for 2016-17.
A Windsor native, Maggio registered 100 points and earned 491 penalty minutes during a 284 game junior career split between Sudbury and Oshawa.
After the New York Rangers decided to pass on their former 170th overall selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Maggio forged a professional career in an enforcer’s role.
Through 156 AHL games, Maggio has racked up a massive 640 penalty minutes, which includes 66 fighting majors. Even though he is yet to play 50 games over a regular season in the AHL, Maggio consistently drops the gloves over ten times a season, including a high of 23 occasions during 2014-15.
His infamous knockout of veteran Brian McGratton and the subsequent rematch last season was the talk of the internet and the first time Daniel Maggio’s name entered the hockey public’s consciousness.
As a right-handed defenseman, Maggio may be able to add some depth at a position where the Marlies are young and experienced. His signing feels pretty similar to the Justin Johnson addition last year, however. Maggio is said to bring a physical game beyond just the fighting, but how much ice time he will actually garner if he sticks with the Marlies is debatable.
Should the organization decide to send him to Orlando, Maggio is well versed in the ECHL.
A 43-game stint with the Fort Wayne Comets in 2012-13 saw him put up 18 points and 147 PIM.
After four years spent with the Colorado organization playing for the Lake Erie Monsters and San Antonio Rampage, the Toronto Marlies will be Maggio’s fourth AHL team.
