“Major Changes” – Dreger

Looks like last nights debacle collapse has been a catalyst as Darren Dreger of TSN reports that “Major Changes coming today for the Toronto Maple Leafs”.  Dreger wonders if the Hiller extension could have something to do with it.

This much we know:  The team is bad as it’s currently composed with just a few pieces to a complex puzzle with only one major component.  Keep an eye on MLHS and TSN today for updates when and if these changes occur.

What’s your speculation?  Is it a Kovalchuk deal?  I say no.  Could it be the long talked about cap space for draft pick rumor?  Something no one has mentioned yet?  Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments.

Injuries Breed Opportunities

Injuries are a part of professional sports.  Whether it is the Blue Jays and their seemingly endless string of pitcher injuries or the Raptors and Jose Calderon’s leg, all teams around each league have to deal with injuries to star players, role players or other integral pieces of the puzzles.  Our own Maple Leafs have had to deal with untimely injuries to Toskala and Gustavsson.   All these injuries can wreck havoc on your roster plans, however, they simultaneously create opportunities for those farther down the depth chart. +Continue Reading

Boston Road Trip

I just rolled in a couple hours ago from my annual road trip to watch a Leafs game.  This year’s destination was Boston.  Phil Kessel’s homecoming.  How could he not be at the top of his game for this tilt?  Wait…. What?

Leafs/Habs Post-Game

In what can only be described as a textbook road game, Toronto feasted on a listless Canadiens squad and pulled out a very valuable shutout win against their long time rivals and their first against a North East division opponent in seven tries this season.  Unexpected sources provided the offense with Colton Orr and Jeff Finger tallying.  It wasn’t all good news, however, as Gustavsson mysteriously left the game during the first intermission. +Continue Reading

Baby Steps

Over the last 2 weeks or so, we’ve seen a Leafs team slowly, but surely, show us what they are capable of doing.   This is a case of an overhauled defense core, struggling goaltending & penalty killing that has conspired to produce the start we’ve been witnessed to the past month.  But there has been a sense of moving forward during the past two weeks.

What Ails Them and Hope

There has been a lot of panic assessment going on this website, other websites and the mainstream media who cover this team.  The type of delirium that goes on in this city with every high and low could easily provide enough material for a psychology dissertation.   It’s a melee of opinions, doomsday proclamations, finger pointing and hate.  What those of you who spew all the tripe need to do is relax for a minute, lest you develop an ulcer.  In what appears to be gigantic cesspool of hockey failure, there are two simple causes and multiple factors for hope. +Continue Reading

The Kadri Konundrum

It seems to be a common theme in Toronto: A hot shot young player turns some heads in pre-season or is heralded by management as a saviour, and the fan base divides down the middle.  Should he stay or should he go (back to junior)?  From Luke Richardson, Jeff Ware, Nik Antropov and more recently, Luke Schenn, a parade of opinions is trotted out on what should happen.  The latest target of discussion is young Nazem Kadri. +Continue Reading

The Day Is Finally Here

July 1st.  This day, to me, is like Christmas used to be when I was a kid.  I look forward to it all year.  How will the Leafs be reshaped?  How will the balance of power in each conference shift as players defect from one team and join another?  How will the GM’s managed to make a travesty of the salary cap this year? It all leads to some very interesting story lines.  It’s already begun with a lot of intrigue. +Continue Reading

Worst Goaltending in Years

This season has brought a number of trials and tribulations to this version of the buds.  A new coach, a new general manager, a proclamation of missing the playoffs and 10 rookies who have played at least 1 game, 6 who have played 20 or more and 4 who have played 65 or more.   The one area of the squad that was expected to be a strength was between the pipes.  Saying it has failed to live up to it’s billing would be an understatement worthy of a gold medal.

Trade Deadline Not a Disappointment

There are many in Leaf Nation who are probably a little disappointed in the aftermath of the trade deadline given the moves the Leafs made. +Continue Reading
