It’s two straight Olympic gold medals for Team Canada. And as bizarre as it sounds, it was never in doubt after the Latvia game. Goaltending, as it turns out, was only a problem for Canada in the sense that it was the only reason Canada didn’t beat the USA and Sweden by a combined 10-0 score.

Steve Yzerman, the management, Mike Babcock and the coaching staff came up smelling like roses after a couple of masterful displays of near hockey perfection in the semi and gold medal finals. They’re charged with the task of assembling the right combinations  out of the best hockey talent pool in the world. They had every winger and defenceman on their strong side. They had an embarrassment of riches with past Stanley Cup and gold medal winners. Every forward was committed to playing 200ft to support a defence that gave up so little. In the end, it was flawless execution of the gameplan: own the puck, give up nothing. Three goals against all tournament, with two shutouts in the semis and the final, is remarkable.

Phil Kessel, meanwhile, took top forward honours in the Olympic tournament. Congrats to Leafs fans and Canada fans everywhere.

Team Canada passed the test against the vaunted American offense, their unequaled depth shining through as they dominated possession and shut the door defensively. How will Canada fare against the only team whose combination of goaltending and defence has rivalled theirs in this tournament?

The gold medal hangs in the balance, and hopefully not around Daniel Alfredsson’s neck when this game is over.

GO CANADA GO!

CANADA WINS!

A dominant showing for a 1-0 scoreline, the only thing still missing from this total team performance by Team Canada was a little more finish, although Jonathan Quick was fantastic. The gold medal game goes Sunday morning at 7 a.m. EST vs. Alfredsson (BOO) and Team Sweden.

Hockey history in the making this afternoon in Sochi.

Canada’s possessional dominance met Finland’s energetic, trapping style in game three of the preliminary stages. Drew Doughty’s regulation and overtime goals were enough to pull out a tight 2-1 victory. Canada will take on the winner of Team Switzerland (another pesky trapping team with good goaltending) or Latvia (not likely to win) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Team Canada’s first real test comes today versus Finland.

No P.K. Subban or Martin St. Louis, Patrick Sharp draws back in.

Go Canada and Go Komarov.

Team Canada strutted to a 6-0 victory over Austria this afternoon in what was a more satiating scoreline for Canadian hockey fans.

Shea Weber

What’s the acceptable scoreline against Norway? Is 3-1 too competitive? Should we panic?

All joking aside, it was consistent dominance throughout by Team Canada. There will be some complaints about too little conversion of possession into more goals, but that’s more of a testament to Norway goaltender Lars Haugen, who stopped 35/38 shots, as well as loads of blocked shots by the Norwegians.

This morning, The Phil did a bit of this:

And then Phil and JvR did some of this:

En route to a 7-1 win over Slovakia which included a goal and two assists for Kessel and two assists for JvR.

Now it’s Team Canada’s turn to look convincing while destroying a lesser hockey nation.

PK Subban and Matt Duchene will not play; Martin St. Louis and Dan Hamhuis will be the 13th forward and 7th defenceman respectively.

Let’s go, Canada.

The Maple Leafs’ dynamic ‘Murican duo takes their talents to the international stage starting this morning versus Slovakia. Word has it Joe Pavelski will center the Leafs’ wingers, comprising a line with 84 combined goals in the NHL this season. That’s Team USA’s first line whether they label it that or not.

The game starts at 7:30 a.m. EST on CBC.

2014 Sochi Olympic's Mens Hockey Schedule

The Olympic Mens Hockey Schedule as now moved away from the preliminary stages of the hockey tournament, and onto the qualification stages.

As Leaf fans, and primarily Canadians, there’s an allegiance to root for the Canadian Olympic Men’s Hockey Team, but with 3 Toronto Maple Leafs going to the 2014 Sochi Olympics, one for Russia (Nik Kulemin) and two going for Team USA (Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk) there could be a certain contingent of fans in the camp of: “If Team Canada is out of it early, I’m rooting for Team Kessel/JVR” with support going to Toronto’s two stars.

Phil Kessel

Earlier today we were gifted this most glamourous of shots. Wyatt Arndt has set the bar pretty high with his Kesselquin Romance series, but that’s no reason we can’t pile on. If you want to join the photochopping party, hack away at the picture above. Below is my “Phil Kessel is America” series, and a couple of bonus chops. If you’re feeling up to it throw yours in the comment section.
