The 2014 NHL Winter Classic was a regular season National Hockey League outdoor game, played on January 1, 2014. It was the sixth Winter Classic and featured the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings at Michigan Stadium (The Big House) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The game was be televised on NBC and CBC. The game was originally planned to be played on January 1, 2013, as the 2013 NHL Winter Classic, but was postponed due to the 2012–13 NHL lockout. The attendance marked the game as the largest of all time. The recorded attendance was 105, 491. The Toronto Maple Leafs won the game 3-2 in a shootout. Tyler Bozak scored the winning goal.
Usually, HBO's 24/7 beats the actual Winter Classic in fanfare and expectation. This year, it has simply been a welcomed preview. The Big House in Ann Arbour, Michigan gathered a record number of bodies (105,491 people), vastly exceeding 71,217 humans attending the first Winter Classic in 2008. After a tough 5-4 SO loss against the Wings on December 21st, the Leafs were due for a victory. Paul Ranger had the right idea, wearing the eye-paint of the tiger and looking very much up for a game which brought him and all those in attendance to the core of their...
It's been a year and a half of a build up for the 2014 Winter Classic. The NHL lockout prevented the winter classic for happening January 1, 2013, and now a year later, the event being dubbed as "The Biggest Hockey Game Of All Time" is going to take place today, weather permitted.
HBO 24/7 has been documenting two teams: the Detroit Red Wings, who have been struggling with injury and consistency problems and, the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have been struggling with injury and consistency problems.
Toronto recently had Tyler Bozak return to the lineup versus the Carolina Hurricanes and...
As those who could tolerate the Fox Sports commentators and the poor camera angles can attest to, the Marlies staged a late comeback effort to win 4-3 in shootout over the Grand Rapids Griffins in the Hockeytown Winter Festival Outdoor game. The Marlies sit 17-10-3 at the 30-game pole and now lead the North Division by three points over Hamilton with three games in hand.
This Marlies team is interesting to watch, in the sense that there is a contradistinction between their style of play and that of the big club. Aside from Spencer Abott, who at least to me...
Thanks to Vintage Leaf Memories' Michael Langlois for stopping by to share some memories ahead of tomorrow's Alumni games, set to be played in Comerica Park at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
When Alec Brownscombe asked me if I was interested in developing a piece for MLHS about the Winter Classic Legends games, my first thought was: who is on the roster? Will I enjoy writing about these guys?
As I jogged through the list of the “first” Leaf team, I didn’t see a lot of promise. Oh, they were all names of pretty solid...

The third of four episodes spans from the shootout win over Phoenix to the shootout loss at the hands of the Rangers before the Christmas break (after which Joffrey Lupul is followed while Christmas shopping and James van Riemsdyk and his family are featured in their annual Christmas shinny game). The centerpiece of the episode is, naturally, the first meeting of the season between the Wings and Leafs.
The full episode will air tonight on Sportsnet. For American-based viewers, it's available on the HBO website.
Lots to see in this episode, but here are a few quick Leafs clips of...
In a far more entertaining second episode of 24/7, both clubs are mired in the frustration of losing too many games, with the respective head coaches serving as the central characters. A furious Mike Babcock sends an HBO cameraman scurrying out of the Wings dressing room. During Randy Carlyle's outburst, the Toronto cameraman has the foresight to tape through a half-closed door rather than standing in the middle of the maelstrom.
Among the must-see Leaf-related moments:
Carlyle peels paint:
The first proper freak out by Carlyle of the 24/7 series came down 3-0 at the second intermission versus Florida. Wow.

HBO 24/7 Red Wings / Maple Leafs - Road to the NHL Winter Classic - Full Episode #1
In Episode #1 of HBO 24/7 Red Wings / Maple Leafs - Road to the NHL Winter Classic, hockey fans get an inside look to The Original Six Franchise's dressing room, coaching staff, players, and hockey operations.
Episode 1 of HBO 24/7: Leafs/Wings aired its first episode Saturday night on HBO U.S. Sportsnet will have a profanity-but-not-commercial free showing Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. EST.
While it was a relatively tame opening “tee up” episode, it still had us glued, and there were a few entertaining moments. The HBO production literally made a closing door seem epic.
Among the highlights, a mic’d up Joffrey Lupul took on Slava Voynov after taking a high cross check to the face, firing Nazem Kadri up on the bench:
Randy Carlyle tangoed with a malfunctioning toaster, calling in the assistance of a...
The rosters have been set for the double header alumni showdown between the Red Wings and the Maple Leafs on New Year's Eve at Comerica Park.
Pat Quinn, Red Kelly, Frank Mahovlich and Johnny Bower among others will call the shots from behind the bench, while the following two rosters will slap on the skates:
Brad May is probably the oddest inclusion on this list. When most fans think of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Brad May, the 2 points in 38 games in his Leaf career usually take a back seat to May getting flattened by Mats Sundin while a...

This show will provide a rare opportunity to basically put yourself on the ice, on the bench, and in the dressing room with the team we think about for multiple hours every day. It's going to be awesome.
