In lieu of a Notebook on the Leafs games that didn’t take place last week, Anthony is going to be doing a Question and Answer session.

He’s such a big deal he needed someone else to post this notice for him. Take your opportunity to ask AP a question in the comments below.

TORONTO, Jan. 16, 2014 /CNW/ – Proving his talents aren’t limited to the ice, Phil Kessel finished second in the NHL Alumni Charity Poker Tournament presented by PokerStars.net, beating out top poker talent and NHL Alumni to claim a share of the $100,000 charity prize-pool.

Kessel outlasted two Canadian poker legends: Daniel Negreanu, Global Poker Index Poker Player of the Decade, and Jonathan Duhamel, 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champion, on his way to claiming the second place spot. In the end, it came down to a heads up match between Kessel and another Team PokerStars Pro, Vanessa Rousso. This time, the poker pro came out on the winning end.

Hockey greats who participated in the event were Matthew Barnaby, Guy Carbonneau, Theo Fleury, Pat LaFontaine, Gary Leeman, Brad May, Marty McSorley, Mark Napier, Denis Savard and Darcy Tucker. Three Canadian hockey fans who won their seats in online promotional tournaments rounded out the field.
The next NHL Alumni Charity Poker Tournament is scheduled for summer 2014 with spots open to online qualifiers. Free qualifying tournaments will start in the spring at PokerStars.net.

Kessel will donate the $15,000 second place prize to SickKids Foundation, and will add $15,000 of his own money to make a total donation of $30,000.

“It is with the generosity of companies like PokerStars.net and people like Phil Kessel that make worthwhile initiatives possible and make a positive impact for kids at The Hospital for Sick Children,” said Jade DeCiccio, Associate, Events, SickKids Foundation.

Our friends at Winging It In Motown and in the Detroit blogosphere (the Delvecchiosphere? Gordosphere?) also have a generous streak and they’ve asked us, along with a number of other teams, to help them in fundraising in the lead up to the Winter Classic. They have a fun way of raising money during games and I’ll let @jennyquarx explain:

Odds have been released for the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, pitting Team Canada as a 23/10 favourite to take home Gold in Men’s Hockey. Click to the web site.

The long-term injury to Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos (broken leg) is one of a few injury concerns for Canada’s team. Forward Rick Nash of the New York Rangers has been sidelined indefinitely with a concussion issue. Both were considered locks for the Sochi roster. A bubble option in forward Jeff Carter also is on the shelf with a lower-body injury. Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward has been banged up in the early season and the injury may have derailed his hopes of representing Canada at the Games.

There are no Toronto Maple Leafs who are likely to represent Canada in Sochi, but there are a few outside shots depending on injury or performance in the months leading up to the Games. Dion Phaneuf is an option on defence, while in net, where Canada’s biggest question mark resides, both Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer’s numbers have been good enough to warrant consideration. Toronto’s tandem represented Team Canada in the World Championships in 2012. Team Canada will bring three netminders to Sochi, with Roberto Luongo, Mike Smith and Carey Price considered among the current favourites.

The dynamic winger duo of James van Riemsdyk and Phil Kessel are sure bets for the Team USA roster, however, and will likely feature on the same line. The instant chemistry is a draw for the minds in charge of picking rosters that must gel quickly for the two-week tournament. Team Canada GM Steve Yzerman may apply the same thinking in bringing Chris Kunitz to play next to Sidney Crosby.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Carl Gunnarsson will likely don the Tre Kronor for Team Sweden. Toronto Marlies defenceman Korbinian Holzer, who played 22 games with the Maple Leafs last season, could represent Team Germany in the Games.

The 2014 Sochi Olympics get underway on February 7, 2014.

Yesterday’s contest didn’t go exactly as planned. In hindsight, it relied pretty heavily on the Leafs winning the game. Don’t blame us, though… who could’ve known readers on a Leafs fan site wouldn’t predict the Senators to beat the Leafs in a hockey game?

North Toronto Hockey Association

Maple Leafs Hot Stove has been approached by a parent of my Nephew’s Hockey Team seeking out a team sponsor(s). After speaking with Alec, we thought it would be a cool idea to see if the MLHS community would like to join in and sponsor the North Toronto Tyke Select Team.

We will feature a write up on the progress of the team and players, as provided, and we can track the players here. Obviously, we’ll respect the young player’s anonymity and follow them with last names only or in a similarly anonymous way. Alec and I have started the bidding off and hope that you can join in and help some young players enjoy the gift of playing hockey, while making sure that none of them become: A) Montreal Canadiens fans or B) Ottawa Senators fans.

We hope you will join in and share in their joy as we track the season of the young 6 year olds. Follow along while they learn the game, make friends and create lifelong memories.

Every little bit helps, and no donation is too small.

***We are hoping to sponsor the away jerseys for the team, with the MLHS logo on it. ***

The MLHS summertime interview series will continue with Vice President of Hockey Operations Dave Poulin on Monday afternoon. As always, I will incorporate a few of the best questions submitted by members of the MLHS community. Try to pick your single juiciest question rather than listing off a whole buffet. Submit it in the comments below.

MLHS is running its annual playoff pool over at CBC, and HOLY SHIT there’s Leafs players in it this year. The prize for the individual group winner will be a “Phil & Nazem & Joffrey & James” MLHS t-shirt. If you happen to win the overall CBC-wide pool, you will also take home a car (an MLHS’er actually finished top 5 a few years back).

JOIN THE MLHS GROUP HERE. Here’s what you’re playing for:

If you haven’t heard yet, there’s a new way to play fantasy hockey that turns the season long grind into quick hitting one night leagues. And the best part is that you can win cash every single day. You draft a team for one night and get paid out as soon as the games end that night. DraftStreet.com is at the forefront of this new trend in the fantasy world and is giving us another promotion, much like the first: a FREE one-day fantasy league with $200 in prizes exclusively for Maple Leafs Hot Stove fans.
