Leafs played well… imho.

By Scot Loucks | Nov 15, 2008

So …. does/should Cujo get the start on Monday?

I think so.

I wasn’t prepared to blame Toskala on the goals …. but others made good points and I have to agree.

Really tough game for the Leafs tonight…. Luongo… is he not the best goalie in the NHL right now? Habs fans are suggesting Price in 2010… what a joke. Luongo has it down pat.

Tough to talk about this one…. had the Leafs scored on the first 5 on 3 I think it would have been a different game… but they didn’t …. but nor did they quit.

Has White solidified his spot on this team? I think so.

How about Colaiacovo?

I was at a Moose/Marlie game last night. Pogge didn’t play but the two players that impressed me were Newbury (big time) and Deveaux…. Newbury plays the PP and the PK and had the most minutes and can skate. Deveaux is big and tough … his skating reminds me of Antropov in his first couple years.

Thoughts?

Cheers

Joseph should get the next start. We really need Vesa to step it up. Good to see Newbury playing well.

He means the Leafs were brutal with the turnovers tonight.

I’m sure Joseph won’t start Monday.
I don’t agree with it, but in Toronto, and most other NHL cities, it’s customary to start goalies according to there pay-rate, unless it’s a back to back game.
Should he start? I don’t think so. For goalies, getting pulled is as good as sitting for a game (Stajan, Blake, etc). It may motivate Toskala to play better.

Or the team to play better in front of him. A lot of his goals are the screened and deflected variety mixed in with the “what was that” types.

I think once the players know how to block without screening or attempt to block so close to the net without deflecting it in, I think the GAA will drop.

I wonder…Can you block shots effectively without screening your goaltender?
The point of screening is to get in front of the shot. If your do that, your screening your goalie. If one gets by you, which will happen, your goalie will be screened on it.
The only way to block without screening therefore, would be to never allow a puck to get past you. Good luck with that.

I was at last nights game and I have to admit that Vesa’s play was “sleepy”. When the Leafs had a 10-0 shot advantage I told my buddy left of me that Toskie would let in the first shot………..and he did. He just didn’t seem to be awake. And for all Jason Blakes hard work, he makes too many foolish decisions with the puck. Seems like over-thinking is the problem. And yes, something has to be done about the turnovers. There are too many blind passes with no heads-up to see who’s actually there. And for my two cents, get rid of Myers/Hollweg and bring up Deveaux/Newbury.

Get rid of Hollweg? Did you see him pummel Hordichuk? No way, he’s great!

I agree with LooshV about Mayers and Hollweg.

Newbury can throw them as well as Hollweg, maybe better, and has more to offer then suspensions.

Newbury over Hollweg for sure!! I would have much rather kept that pick and let Newbs play then to watch Hollweg get beat up 95% of the time… or just kept Belak for that matter.

I’m not too worried about the overall state of the team. If someone had said that the Leafs would have won 1 out of 3 games in Western Canada, I believe most fans would have expected that…

    Troy..
You attempt to block shots are either to primarily taking the low shot away (Lay down on ice no Screen) or attempt to get into the shooting lane to take the entire shot away or force a bad angle shot (Screen). So yes you can block and not screen. Unfortunately when you attempt to get into the shooting lane and you don’t succeed your a perfect screen or the puck tips off you and Taaa daaa goal for opposing team. There are other aspects to it but thats it in a nut shell.

I would suggest giving Cujo the start. I am not confident that we will get a win because of it, but I am not confident that Toskala would be able to get a win also. At the end of the day I think the prospect of a win for Joseph would be better for the team as whole (if that happens). It would add pressure to Toskala to play better, and give the other guys in the dressing room some relief that another goaltender can win a game. Toskala was sleepy last game and it’s not the first time. I remember hearing about his slow start. Looks to me like he’s getting slower.

Newbury and Deveaux huh…. If they are playing well on the Marlies good for them. I never like’d Deveaux as a leaf. The new management brought Hollweg and Myers in, don’t expect to see Newbury or Deveaux anytime soon. Maybe if Burke comes….

Is anyone happy about the prospect of Burke as the President/GM. He inherited the Ducks as a good team already. I was never crazy about his moves in Vancouver. IMO he’s one of those guys that brings with him the guys he made trades for or signed in the past ie: Brendan Morrison, and the Sedin twins. No thanks. Give Cliff a chance.

Toskala is getting the start tonight.

Justin…. you are thinking of Boyd Devereaux.

Andre Deveaux is a huge forward with great hands and can fight. He also just literally runs over people. Not the strongest skater though.

Newbury was playing PP, PK and eating up the minutes…. he is also the Marlies leading point getter.

    Cheers

Any realistic predictions on tonight’s score?

    I predict a 3 – 2 score for Boston in Overtime.
