The first round didn’t quite live up to all the hype that we were hoping for, but Toronto did come out of it with a promising two-way centreman in Nazem Kadri. As it currently stands, Toronto will have six selections on Day 2 of the NHL Entry Draft, which encompasses rounds 2 through 7. It all kicks off on NHL Network at 10am ET. 2nd round – 50th overall- Forward Kenny Ryan, USNTDP
2nd round – 58th overall – Defenseman Jesse Blacker, Windsor
3rd round – 68th overall – Forward Jamie Devane, Plymouth
5th round – 128th overall – Defenseman Eric Knodel, Philadelphia Jr.
6th round – 158th overall – Forward Jerry D’Amigo, USNTDP
7th round – 188th overall – Defenseman Barron Smith, Petetborough

10:03 – Things kick off right away with some action. FLA trades Bouwmeester’s rights to CGY for Leopold’s rights and a 3rd round selection.
10:09 – There goes the dream. O’Reilly off to the Avalanche at #33. He and Duchene are going to be one heckuva punch down the middle for a long, long time.
10:13 – Chris Brown off to the Coyotes at #36. Matt Clark to the Ducks at #37, Toronto’s 2nd round selection that was traded to the Islanders for Luke Schenn. Two of my favorites gone back to back.
10:15 – Anton Lander goes to the Oilers at #40. He and MPS are going to be a dynamic duo for them in the future.
10:16 – I am literally crying. Zach Budish to the Predators with #41. 4 of my favorites slated to go mid 2nd round go in a row.
10:24 – Toronto now up at #50. Shore, Morin and Werek go off the board JUST before.
10:26 – Maple Leafs select American winger Kenny Ryan, ranked 56th overall among North American skaters. A bit of a reach at this spot.
10:28 – Richard Panik to the Panthers at #52. Gotta figure Toronto pops a goaltender, either Roy or Hackett with #58.
10:34 – Columbus trades into #56 and selects Lynch. Islanders trade down again. San Jose grabs Doherty at #57, a possible Leaf selection.
10:36 – Toronto selects defenseman Jesse Blacker from Windsor 58th overall.
10:38 – Detroit nabs Tatar. I called this one, but I was figured it would be at #29, not #59. Tremendous pick here.
10:40 – Beginning of the 3rd round. Plenty of talent still available. Can’t believe Hackett and Roy are still on the board. Toronto cannot afford to pass up on these too if they’re still on the board at #68.
10:44 – Pittsburgh steals the dynamic high school forward Ben Hanowski with pick #63. Colorado takes Tyson Barrie, son of Lightning owner Len Barrie with #64.
10:49 – Leafs are up… and they take forward Jamie Devane from Plymouth. This one doens’t make any sense to me. Roy, Hackett, Eakin all still on the board.
11:00 – Matthew Hackett to the Wild in the mid 3rd round. And we wonder why that organization always has quality goaltending. Tremendous pick.
11:10 – Washington continues to draft very very well. Eakin at #85 is a steal.
11:24 – Hutchings to the Lightning in the 4th round. They have had an AMAZING draft so far: Hedman, Ashton, Panik and now Hutchings. They stole Tokarski in the 5th last year too. My hat’s off to them.
11:34 – 100 picks now in the books. Toni Rajala, Olivier Roy, Erik Haula, Jimmy Bubnick among the top names still available. Whoops nevermind. Rajala to the Oilers. They are going skill, skill and more skill.
11:52 – Chicago goes back to the Everett Silvertips from whom they took Kyle beach last year and grabs centre Byron Froese. Good pick.
11:55 – Here we go. The start of the 5th round. We are 7 picks away from Toronto and notables Jimmy Bubnick and Olivier Roy are both still on the board. Both are 1st round talents, and 2nd round value. Either would be fantastic.
12:02 – Toronto’s 5th round selection at #128 overall…. 6’6 American defenseman Eric Knodel. Once again, another off the board selection of a North American with size and Burkian attributes. They better like what they see, because they just passed on Erik Haula, Tomas Vincour, Olivier Roy and Jimmy Bubnick.
12:08 – Edmonton is literally ecstatic picking behind Toronto and picking up its leftovers. They have now added MPS, Lander, Rajala, and Roy to their cupboards. Rookie GM’s are dominating Day 2 of this draft.
12:10 – I do not understand why this many teams have passed on Olivier Roy. He is raw, he is inconsistent, but he possesses all the tools to be an elite NHL goaltender someday. A lot of teams are going to regret their decision to let him slide.
12:34 – Atlanta takes Jimmy Bubnick off the board. 25 goal scorer from the WHL, 6’5 with a ton of potential. He should not have lasted this long. Great pick.
12:36 – Toronto grabs American winger Jerry D’Amigo 158th overall. I like this pick. Dynamic offensive player with speed and skill, but is slightly undersized. Very good value in the 6th round, as this is a 3rd round talent.
1:00 – Kings proven once again they are not afraid to gamble on small, skilled players. Like Azevedo last season, they have take RW Brandon Kozun, who just produced a 108 point season in the WHL.
1:05 – Minnesota takes Erik Haula out of Shattuck’s. Figures. That’s a great fit and a tremendous value pick for them at this point in the draft. Oh well.
1:12 – Nearing Toronto’s last selection of the day, 188th overall. They Leafs may choose to go back to their trend of late round European success and look at a guy like Anton Myllari from Sweden. A big, bruising defensive defenseman.
1:15 – And Toronto selections Barron Smith, a 6’5 American defenseman playing for the Petetborough Petes of the OHL. Looks like another reach for a project type player, who had 2 points last season.
