Official Deal: Kubina + Tim Stapleton for Garnet Exelby + Colin Stuart.
Turns out it’s Garnet Exelby + a few other parts coming back. Looks to be a salary cap clearance more than anything for something bigger… Burke’s expected to make a major push for Komisarek now as reported here earlier.
Exelby’s a tough customer and a Canadian boy. The theme continues….
The Leafs gain $2 million in cap space in the exchange.

making room for Komisarek…
July 1st, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Exelby is a big hitter and gritty. I like it.
July 1st, 2009 at 5:34 pm
love it . he pissed me off all the time when we played against him
July 1st, 2009 at 5:35 pm
I don’t mind this at all. Exelby is a huge hitter. Maybe Kaberle won’t go anywhere. As Burke says, if Kaberle moves he immediately has to go out and get a replacement, which will be way more costly than $4.25M.

Ps…very interested to see what the other pieces of the deal are.
July 1st, 2009 at 5:37 pm
getting to be a log jam on defence especially if Komisarek enters into the mix…
Schenn
Kaberle
White
Finger

Concern that the bidding war’s gotten out of control with Komi…
July 1st, 2009 at 5:43 pm
What will the Leafs do with Exelby? He’s a great hitter and all, but horrible defensively and offensively worse than Hal Gill. He’s young though, so maybe he’s a project player for the Marlies to deal with. Glad to see Kubina gone – I was a fan of his, but he lost his game in Toronto trying to do too much. Hopefully things work out better for him in Atlanta.

how about Strahlman…I think he may be part of a package down the line…He is not a Burkie type player…but if Kaberle moves he may take over somewhat of that role
July 1st, 2009 at 5:43 pm
Honestly, i think both komisarek and bouwmeester are overrated. Calgary is gonna regret it. And so are we if we pay more than 4 per for komiserek.
July 1st, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Yeah, I didn’t think of that. Exelby could be headed straight to the AHL for all we know.
July 1st, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Exelby is a warrior. He’s not going to the Marlies.
July 1st, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Komisarek down to two teams…but who?

Loving the signings so far. Not much skill but a whole lotta beligerance. We won’t be getting pushed around that’s for sure.
July 1st, 2009 at 5:49 pm
So Exelby and Stewart for Kubina and Stapleton’s rights.
Not impressed at all!!
July 1st, 2009 at 5:50 pm
we get Colin Stewart from Atl. and they get rights to Tim Stapleton
July 1st, 2009 at 5:54 pm
I guess they got the spelling wrong – his name is actually Colin Stuart.
Here’s his profile from the Thrasher’s Webpage:

July 1st, 2009 at 5:57 pm
I take everything back, I am totally Sorry BB, Orr,Komiserik,Exelby…Schenn…We are going to be tough !
July 1st, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Definetly won’t be getting pushed around this year.
I guess the Kubina trades is alright, seeing as it opened up some cap space to bring in Komisarek. Although I would have liked to get a draft pick back from the Thrashers.
Thus far our defence will look something like this:
Kaberle – Schenn
White – Komisarek
Finger – Van Ryn
(Frogren – Stralman)
July 1st, 2009 at 6:01 pm
Whoops, forgot to add in Exelby.
Guess we’re getting into a bit of a log jam on defence!
July 1st, 2009 at 6:02 pm
Kaberle is next!
Sweet!
July 1st, 2009 at 6:13 pm
I’d rather keep Kaberle around as we still need a puck-moving defenseman, can’t have a blueline full of defensive specialist!! Although if we hold onto him, we may be unable to trade him at the deadline as he might refuse to waive his no-trade clause at that point.
That being said, if the right deal comes along involving a Top Line Forward, Kaberle is on the first jet outta town!!
Not sure why Burke wanted Exelby (another defenseman) back in the Kubina deal. I guess Atlanta refused to part with Armstrong and Burke wasn’t interested in any of the other forwards on the Thrashers?
July 1st, 2009 at 6:15 pm
Not much skill on the d once they get rid of Kabs.

tim stapleton played amazing for the marlies, i was excited for him to move up. not a fan of this move, other than the salary dump. other than nash, who could he be opening up all this cap space for next season?

July 1st, 2009 at 6:41 pm
i freaking love this trade. Exelby? he’s a beast…
July 1st, 2009 at 8:31 pm
What does everybody think of trading Kaberle for a Top Line Forward and then signing a guy like Jordan Leopold or Sergei Zubov to somewhat replace him?
Anybody interested in Gionta, Kovalev, Koivu, Tanguay or even the possibility of bring back Antropov?

@Joe James Di Nardo
Where did the come from last year? Weren’t we 10th in Goals for?
July 2nd, 2009 at 1:57 am
Now that we have some D, we should do another sign and trade with Kabs to Boston for Kessel, and Beauchemin signing with us…even though that’d leave us with no offence from the point, I’m sure we could work it into Luke Schenn, and Ian White could evolve into a slightly older Mike Green…but that’s being very opptimistic.
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:40 am
good salary dump, think we could have gotten more though. But cleared space for Komi which was a good move
