As reported, Leafs deal Kubina and then turn and sign Mike Komisarek. $4.5 per for 5 years (pretty damn good value).
Burke’s defensive corps is starting to take its shape… Leafs getting increasingly badass.
Update: Komisarek turned down more money to go to T.O.

I would LOVE to see Bertuzzi here at the right price. Dont flame me about it either because he would be perfect to pair up with Mitchell and Blake. I bet he would be signed for about 1.5, and thats a good bargain.
Hes not a 1st line anymore, we all know that. But a 2nd-3rd liner is something he will look good at. I thought he would be a mistake at first but really, what is there to lose? Nothing….

Hopefully Burke is meeting up with Gustavsson today to finish up the paper work
Seriously though if we land “The Monster” than this has been a pretty awesome offseason for Burke: Bozak, Hanson, Gustavsson, Kadri, Komisarek, Orr and Exelby. Plus the value for Kaberle has been set at something around Kessel, possibly Kessel+ (but apparently not a first rounder)…so if he does move him that’s probably a top line forward right there.
He also has a lot left to do, obviously, as now we’ve got a wealth of guys on the blue line so there might be some movement there as well.

Interesting story on Nash contract talks…will he be available a year from now…maybe.
Anyway Nonis (todays Sun) is saying that the Leafs are pretty much done with the exception of someone making a significant offer for Kaberle.
So the Leafs have a team now that has some fight. In my opinion they are still a team that can challenge for last place. I will be curious to see how the young players in house respond to the opportunities presented.
Unless the Leafs are holding down a playoff spot I expect that at some point we will see vets moved mid season. Toskala might be moved, Van Ryn, Stempniak, Stajan, Poni and maybe even Blake. Hopefully those players can be showcased thru the season.

@B Leaf: Couldn’t agree more. These guys will give our young guys more room to move around out there and will step in for them if anyone takes liberties, unlike last year.
I still think Kaberle will be gone and most of the guys you listed will be traded at the deadline (or at least shopped).
I think going into the season our top 6 dmen will consist of Schenn, Komi, Finger, Exelby and then two of Stralman, White and MVR. The only question is which of those guys do you leave off? I hope not Stralman but you can’t really sit White after his season last year, and MVR looked really good last year when he was healthy. Kind of puts us in a bind.

I see a lot of talk around top 6 on D
Here’s mine:
Komi, White, Schenn, MVR, Exelby, Straalman.
Finger or Frogren would be the call up for MVR’s first Injury – right around the start of November
Kaberle needs to be traded for some help at FWD.
Sifers and Oreskovic if needed.
Need The Monster or another quality Goalie to help shore up the D.

fan 590 reporting this morning that Kaberle Kessel talks are back on.
I am one that would like to see Kaberle moved but I am not in favour of that trade unless as first reported at draft the Bruins throw in a first. Peter Chiarelli is arguably a top 3 GM and I would be very leary of dealing with him. Kaberle is coming off a bad year, but he has alot to offer.
Doug MacLean isn’t a GM anymore for a reason.

I’d still rather keep Kaberle. I’m not fully convinced about Kessel yet, but I’m sure our good posters here will offer convincing arguments against. That whole team clicked last season, and I think his numbers reflected that. I’m not sure he’d be the same player with the Leafs. If it goes through, I hope I’m dead wrong!

Blue Max,
I agree with you, although I think there are sound reasons to be optimistic about Kessel.
The star is also reporting fresh this morning that talks are back on between Leafs and Bruins.

Burke is also trying to close deal with the monster. Also it appears Beauchemin is still a possibility. If the Leafs sign Beauchemin as well and get a top six for Kaberle, it may take them out of the running for Taylor Hall. I love Beauchemin- very solid player- but not good for finishing last.
Forget about Malhotra.

Thanks for the link. I hope they all forget about Malhotra. If they go after Beauchemin, and I hope they do, it would mean that one or two of Finger/Frogren/White will be gone too. Just a hunch.

Antropov signed with the Thrashers ($ 16 mill / 4 years)…according to TSN

I hink either we look at a top six in a trade for Kaberle, of we keep what we have. Dont shoot me now, but I want to see our top 2 lines of this:
Tlusty-Sundin-Kadri/Bozak/Hanson (whoever is ready)
Hagman-Grabo-Kulemin
YES I SAID SIGN SUNDIN. Dont go on about it too because we owe it to him first off for kicking him out. He should be our captain, then retire and hand it to Luke Schenn next year. I think he is an excellent guy to bring in and help develope Tlusty, Bozak, Hanson, Kadri, Kulemin and Grabovski. Hes got leadership, and I think its the right move. Were not looking to win this year, but we need to look in the right direction, and he will help for sure!
July 2nd, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Sure, we’ll sign Sundin…when he decides to play in February. Seriously, I love Sundin and think he’s one of the best Leafs of all time but we don’t need him. Bottom line.
July 2nd, 2009 at 3:24 pm
If you guys don’t include Jeff Finger in your top 6 d, he might as well be trade bait, seeing as I doubt Burkie will keep him floating around in case of injuries with such a heafty contract.

Komisarek signing is rated second best out of all the deals on sports illustrated.
